Grimm Season 6, Episode 13 “Ashing” Breakdown

Anselm von Seherr-Thoss – I was approached again by RefugeVFX to help out on an episode of GRIMM (Season6,Episode13) on some simulation work. This time ashing similar to my work on Shannara Chronicles (vimeo.com/178663350). TP and FumeFX. Small but fun contribution to the final season of the show.

The setup is simplified to be handled on client side by a less experienced artist. So This version of the tool is controlled by 1 radial gradient ramp with some noise that has 4 key frames: shift the key frames or push them together/pull them apart > you change the timing of the effect without opening TP even…

For more broken up triggering just add more noise and animate the phase of the gradient ramp noise > done!
This setup does not use any VolumeBreakers which tend to be slow. It eats every geometry, prefragments with a Fragmenter node and then triggers with a second Fragmenter. The key to get nice edge detail is a Tesselate and TurboSmooth on the mesh since Fragmenter brakes along the edges.
