Junior Technical Animator

Description

We are looking for a Junior Technical Animator to work at our newly renovated, best-in-class, Capture Studio and interact directly with some of the best Artists and R&D engineers in our industry. Your job will be to ensure that we deliver the highest quality facial and body motion capture data, checking raw motion capture data for the team.
The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of animation principles and an acute sense of timing and weight. You must have experience with motion-capture editing techniques.
A successful Junior Technical Animator is expected to demonstrate a keen eye for detail, and a passion for developing high quality games and animations. You are self-motivated, open to learning and expanding your knowledge.

Responsibilities:

Using custom and specialized Motion Capture software and tools
Cleaning up, modifying, “plussing,” checking, and QC-ing raw facial and Motion Capture data on a Blade skeleton
Working directly with the department Lead and Senior Animators as well as Designers to identify and execute on the animation needs of the game
Following group standards and best practices
Participating in a multi-discipline development team
Collaborating effectively with the Art and Capture teams
Managing day-to-day development issues; identifying problems and driving creative solutions to fix them
Preparing for, and attending, motion capture shoots, as needed

Requirements:

College degree in Animation or equivalent experience in the video game industry with strong animation portfolio
Experience with FACS, facial performance animation, and cleanup
Experience with Motion Capture
A positive attitude and ability to work on a multi-discipline team
Ability to take direction well and address notes
A passion for developing high quality games
Extremely detail oriented and organized
Excellent communication skills
Experience with Motion Builder, Blade, or an equivalent Motion Capture Software
Python, HSL, or other scripting experience a plus
Experience with previs & cameras

Senior Research Engineer

Description

Activision Central Technology’s CTX group is seeking a Sr. Research Engineer to join our team in Santa Monica, CA. We are a team of artists, scientists, and engineers who collaborate with Activision studios to develop pioneering workflows and techniques for game content creation. We combine expertise from the game industry and the film industry to advance real-time visuals to levels which were previously exclusive to motion pictures. We are looking for an exceptionally skilled—and flexible—researcher to develop novel technologies to take on production challenges!

Responsibilities:

· Lead R&D projects related to performance capture, character animation, and other focus areas as directions evolve
· Proactively come up with ideas for new research directions, workflows, etc.
· Work with team members and studio collaborators to design and implement novel technologies to meet production needs
· Jump into both long-term R&D efforts as well as short-term production support as needed
· Engage with the academic and industry R&D communities, and identify collaboration and partnership opportunities
· Present research findings in scientific journals and/or conferences
· Advise and mentor interns

Requirements:

· Research experience, Ph.D. preferred, with a strong record of research publications
· Expert knowledge of Python, C++, and object-oriented programming practices
· Solid software engineering skills, including the ability to write robust, maintainable, well-architected, well-documented code
· Strong knowledge of mathematics for 3D graphics, particularly linear algebra
· Experience with computer vision and/or numerical optimization
· The ability to track down bottlenecks and accuracy/quality issues, wherever they may be in a pipeline
· Strong problem-solving skills
· Strong verbal and written communications skills, and ability to work effectively with multiple teams
· Self-motivated and able to quickly learn new areas of development
· Strong ability to innovate

Recommended:

· 5+ years’ experience in software R&D in a CG production environment
· Strong understanding of the CG production process
· Strong working knowledge of Maya
· Strong understanding of game content creation pipelines
· Knowledge of current industry character animation practices, techniques, and technologies
· Qt / PyQt / PySide development
· Maya plugin development

Responsibilities:

· Work with artists, engineers, supervisors, and producers to determine workflows, tool requirements, and automation needs
· Maintain a solid understanding of the production pipelines at our studios
· Proactively come up with ideas for new workflows, plugins, etc.
· Assist in designing, developing, maintaining, and supporting asset creation pipelines and tools which integrate with different specific studio pipelines
· Jump into both long-term R&D efforts as well as short-term production support as needed

Requirements:

· A minimum of 5 years’ experience in developing pipeline tools and workflows in a CG production environment
· Strong understanding of the CG production process
· Understanding of the state-of-the-art in game engines
· The ability to track down bottlenecks and accuracy/quality issues, wherever they may be in a pipeline
· Expert knowledge of Python, C++, and object-oriented programming practices
· Solid software engineering skills, including the ability to write robust, maintainable, well-architected, well-documented code
· Strong working knowledge of Maya
· Strong problem-solving skills
· Strong verbal and written communications skills, and ability to work effectively with multiple teams
