Job Description

Summary / Overview

To take full responsibility for the assigned areas of the design and to monitor these through development, ensuring the integrity of the game and the game-play is of the highest standard in line with required timescales. Doing this with the assistance of the Design Manager / Design Director. To pass on knowledge and experience to junior members of staff through appropriate coaching and mentoring and to take on staff management responsibilities where required.

Role Responsibilities

Own and be responsible for the assigned areas of design
To focus knowledge and learning on becoming a Design expert in defined areas
Deliver the required designs on time and on specification, to a high standard
Work with Design Director and Design Manager on the schedule
Create and maintain working design documents
Hand over Functional Game Designs to a development team and ensure their understanding of the design
Ensure that Junior Games Designers are fully aware of all design issues within their game design documents and that this is passed on in the correct manner to the development team
Monitor their game designs during implementation, playing and suggesting appropriate changes to improve the game quality at all stages
Work with more junior designers on reviewing their game designs with the goal of improving the game and helping them understand the thought process of improving the game
Manage any assigned team members
Create and agree cross departmental pipelines, processes and tool development to deliver the final game content to a high standard
Manage and participate in the delivery of high quality, bug free, final game content
Manage and execute consumer testing, ensuring the tests are fully documented and this information is shared with the relevant team members with the aim of improving the final game quality
Participate in regular, hands-on interaction with production, art, animation, music and programming departments to present the latest design and work in an on-going basis to ensure the final game implementation is of the highest quality and meets the design requirements
Interact with each studio and publishing department that touches any aspect of the game
To ensure all delivered versions of games are thoroughly play-tested, reporting all faults back through Dev Track
Suggest ideas for new game concepts to the Design Director and Design Manger
Assist on task creation, allocation and management
Expose problems with the current game builds and proactively liaise with the relevant developers to sort immediately
Be proactive – influencing senior developers and management with the intention of winning negotiations to make changes happen that improve the game’s design
Role Requirements (Knowledge, Skills Experience)
Functional experience with all facets of game development; strong game literacy in console games
Stays current on market trends and competitive titles
Detail conscious
Conceptual understanding of gameplay including controller sensibility, player interface design, game structure, goals and reward schedules
Proven success in designing and specifying game features and working through design revisions and production phases
Effectively collaborates with development team to achieve innovative design targets
Proven ability to manage a small team
Diplomatic in reporting and resolving issues with games
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to clearly document design objectives, procedures etc
Strong interpersonal skills; proven ability to build effective relationships
Word, Excel experience a must. Flow charting and diagramming software experience a plus
Shipped multiple console or PC titles; acted as a lead designer on at least one title shipped
Excellent time management skills
5 years mechanics design and/or level building experience
Unselfish attitude to games and idea ownership
Creative thinker
Ability to accept other people’s ideas and suggestions and develop them
Coaching / mentoring skills
Skilled in decision making and fully accountable
Credits in casual, social games and/or music a plus
