Matte Painter (Environment)

Everything will be awesome when you’re part of the team! Animal Logic – the studio that brought you The LEGO Movie – is looking for Matte Painters. The position involves working closely with the Production Designer, Art Director and Matte Painting Lead to realize the productions requirements. This is a fulltime, contract role that reports to Artist Management.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Re-create life like environments using projections, illustrations and assets
Produce complex matte painted elements to a high standard with a thorough understanding of perspective, lighting, and colour
Collaborate with other members of the production such as modelling, surfacing, lighting and compositing in order to get the best result in the most efficient way
Produce concept art that conveys the style, lighting and character of the brief would be an advantage
Understand department pipeline including all assets and tools, and their purpose. Become proficient with the departments propriety tools

Requirements:

3 + years’ experience on feature film required (feature animation is strongly preferred)
Proven production experience using Photoshop, Nuke and Maya
Ability to combine 2D and 3D elements into believable environments
A strong knowledge of camera focal lengths, a good sense of composition, and colour theory
Ability to creatively solve problems
Attention to design and artistic detail
Open to new workflows and tool sets
Ability to efficiently organize and prioritize assigned tasks
Willing to learn, and contribute to the success of the team and project
Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to efficiently organise and prioritise work across multiple areas and work under pressure
Ability to take direction and feedback; anticipating the supervisors and leads preference
English verbal and written skills are required to fulfil the requirements of the job
Other software skills that would be an advantage would include Mari, Mudbox, Zbrush, Vue, and LDD

Senior Matte Painter (Environment) – LEGO 2

Mid/Senior Modeller – LEGO 2

Everything will be awesome when you’re part of the team! Animal Logic – the studio that brought you The LEGO Movie – is looking for Mid/Senior Modellers. The position involves interpreting a variety of media from Concept Art and creating applicable, working 3D models back into the pipeline ready for utilization from other departments. This is a fulltime, contract role that reports to Artist Management and the Modelling Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Utilize software such as Maya, UV Layout, Z-Brush, and LDD to produce high quality work.
Produce complex models to a high standard with a thorough understanding of shape, scale and form for both LDD and Maya models
Work within/produce – topology/wire frame, turntables, character and/or environment
Produce accurate UVs for models for use in downstream departments
Interact with tracking systems and production staff
Interpret 2D designs and translate them into 3D space while maintaining the original artistic intent
Produce highly optimized meshes that can be rendered and displayed efficiently for downstream departments such as Rigging, Layout and Lighting
Assume responsibility for ensuring assigned work is produced to appropriate standard quality within the scheduled timeframe and deadlines.
Utilize good knowledge of emerging technologies to find innovative ways to incorporate these into work processes (in consultation with seniors/supervisors)
Ensure a high level of communication is maintained with senior artists and production management particularly where situations arise that may compromise the quality or scheduled delivery of material
Escalate issues or potential issues in a timely manner to leads or supervisor if applicable.
Distribute and share knowledge regularly to assist in the ongoing development of innovative tools and or techniques for modelling
Exhibit a keen design sense and proactively provide creative input where appropriate
Efficiently document workflow and feedback from Leads or Supervisors

Requirements:

3+ years’ experience with VFX/Animation software tools and processes for TV and/or animated feature films
3+ years’ experience in modelling
Thorough knowledge of Maya and Z-Brush, with LDD as a bonus
Solid understanding of hard surface modelling techniques and topology
Solid understanding of proper edge flow and polygon density
Solid understanding of the topological requirements of subdivision surface for both static and deforming models
Thorough knowledge of both hard surface and organic, environments, props, creatures
Strong understanding of industry standards, conventions, and formats to enable successful completion of work
Solid understanding of digital production and overall pipeline methodology
Proven technical and visual skills with an understanding of art and design within animation environment.
Excellent attention to detail and the ability to abstract and interpret design down to its’ fundamentals
Strong organisational and time management skills
Completed education in a relevant field is preferable
English verbal and written skills are required to fulfil the requirements of the job

Lighting TD – LEGO 2

Animal Logic is looking for a Lighting TD who will develop and build upon the Lighting pipeline and systems. The Lighting TD should be prepared to write helper and pipeline tools to support the lighting team and their process. They will be responsible for varying levels of pipeline troubleshooting, user support, technical direction and lighting/output tool development. This is a fulltime, contract role that reports to the Lighting Supervisor and Artist Management.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Understand the visual requirements for the film, and design procedures and techniques that will enable these to be met
Provide solutions to visual problems through existing tools or by leading development of new tools
Assist Artists with day to day issues and glitches and eventually escalating those issues through the right channels when they aren’t immediately addressable
Understand the processes of adjoining departments (eg. surfacing, assembly) and provide input where required to maximise efficiency and quality
Implements strategies/efficiencies in the use of disk space and/or render requirements
Provide input to the shading department to ensure that the requirements of surfacing and lighting are met in all shading development
Maintaining a clean common facility pipeline (tools, automation, practices) across multiple shows at the same time
Communicate and promote repeatable, pipeline based workflows that will ensure data security and efficiency throughout the whole production
Identify and spec department software requirements; discuss these with RnD leads and distribute them to internal software TD’s
Ensure all software development tasks are clearly articulated to the Software Development Manager and all software conforms to facility standards
Creating and updating documentation that supports the Lighting processes
Establish close partnership with Lighting staff and other TD groups
Show an understanding to develop junior talent and be prepared to pass on knowledge to all crew as required

Requirements:

4 + years’ experience on feature films, TV and/or animated feature
4 + years’ experience in CG or VFX production
Experience developing in Python, C++ or MEL
Experience in the following software: Maya, Python, Nuke, PrMan/Arnold or other industry standard renderer
Computer Science, Design, Engineering, Maths or Physics Advanced level of understanding of 3D packages and rendering technology and Lighting principles
Thorough understanding of compositing and colour theory
Ability to multi-task, efficiently organise and prioritise work across multiple areas
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
Excellence in problem solving and balancing quick turnaround with long term quality
An ability to quickly acquire a working understanding of both off-the-shelf and proprietary software tools
Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively work and communicate in English

Salary range CAD$88,000 – $120,000 and extended medical benefits.
