Pipeline Engineer

Animal Logic is one of the world’s most accomplished digital studios producing award winning, ground breaking and trail blazing animation, visual effects and design.

We are about to commence our next slate of Animated feature films and we are looking for energetic and experienced Pipeline Engineer to join our Vancouver team.

Key Responsibilities include:

Lead the design and development of pipeline software used by artists in various craft departments
Collaborate frequently with other technical leads at a global scale to ensure system dependencies are identified and communicated
Provide technical leadership to team through technical design, code reviews and implementation of best practices and R&D coding standards
Contribute to the development of tools and interfaces, enabling asset flow, scene assembly and scene manipulation
Support and manage complex workflows in a highly iterative pipeline
Communicate daily with both technical and creative crew
We will be adapting our existing Lego pipeline to meet the creative requirements of several new films. You will collaborate daily with production and technical personnel in both Vancouver and Sydney.

To be successful in this role you must have:

A Post-Secondary qualification in Computer Science or Engineering
Experience developing software in Python and C++
Experience building user interfaces with pyQT
Minimum 3 years’ experience working with the APIs of industry standard applications such as Maya, XSI, Nuke, etc.
Knowledge of Rendering, Shading, CharFX, Linear Algebra and other related areas a plus
Experience with the full software development life cycle
Familiarity with design patterns and their appropriate use
Good team spirit and ability to collaborate with artists and other developers in a deadline oriented environment

Lead Matte Painter

Animal Logic is seeking a talented Lead Matte Painter to join our team to join us on our first animated feature in Vancouver!

The Lead Matte Painter must be able to demonstrate the aesthetics and techniques required to produce breathtaking photo realistic imagery and the ability to oversee all matte painting assets and their implementation within the Animal logic pipeline, with a thorough understanding of all possible techniques.
This role is responsible for this crew and the quality of its output. This is a technical managerial role which involves working closely with the Production Designer and the Art director to realise the production requirements.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Understand a projects creative objective
Working in partnership with Modelling and Comp departments to achieve the highest outcomes
Creating digital matte paintings that may be created from scratch or from sampled photography, scanned reference or any other artwork necessary to create new objects or to match the surfaces of existing live action
Continue to actively develop relevant knowledge, techniques and skills including knowledge of technical processes in Animation and compositing
Bring all significant production issues to the attention of the Art Director, Leads, Producer and Head of Department and help to resolve them
Collaborate to shape the matte pipeline within the larger Animal Logic context and oversee it’s consistent integration and application
Understanding of the stereoscopic impact on the pipeline
Work with the production team to establish schedules and technical outcomes
Offer creative solutions to achieve the desired outcomes, to meet deadlines and budget parameters
Help with recruiting and performance interviews
Escalate in a timely manner any issues that may affect your ability to carry them out
Facilitate meetings with artists to keep crew informed

Requirements:

A comprehensive knowledge of the film and television industry, digital production processes and digital matte painting production
Excellent attention to detail
Ability to work to deadlines
Proven strong technical and visual skills
Proven strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to multi-task, prioritise and problem solve
Ability to work well with others in a team environment and when necessary to pass knowledge to other staff members
Experience in Maya is preferable

Artist Management Supervisor (Permanent)

We are seeking an Artist Management Supervisor for our Vancouver Animation studio to successfully lead the Vancouver artist management team in ensuring an efficient and consistent approach to the resourcing and management of artists. This role reports into the Executive Vice President & General Manager of the Studio, leads the artist management team, as well as personally manages a number of assigned artists.

Key responsibilities include:

Partnering with the Head of Artist Management (Sydney) and the EVP &GM to develop a consistent approach to the daily operations of the Vancouver artist management team
Leading, developing and growing the Vancouver-based Artist Management team members
Working with Production, Recruitment and other artist management team members to schedule existing and new hires into appropriate roles and establish longer term recruitment needs
Cultivating a strong studio culture and keep artists motivated and engaged in collaboration with Craft Supervisors, Leads, Production, HR and other artist management team members
Leading project/yearly compensation and performance reviews for artists in collaboration with Craft Supervisors, Leads and other artist management team members
Direct management, coaching and mentoring of assigned Artists
Managing reviews, training and project scheduling for assigned artists to help their development and nurture their career growth
Partner with HR on talent management strategies and processes for all artists in the studio
Partner with HR to continually review policies that pertain to all artists in the studio
Partner with facility managers on seating arrangements and structure for all artists in the studio

To be successful in this role, the following is required of all candidates:

Over five years’ experience working in the Animation and Visual Effects industry
At least four years’ experience as an senior artist manager within a large global studio
Experience supervising/managing a facilities based team (artist management, HR, production etc)
Experience in recruitment, onboarding, managing, developing and coaching a large number of direct reports
Experience in forecasting, budgeting and scheduling resources on projects
Experience in managing the annual performance and compensation review process, employee contract renewals, salary negotiations and promotions
Experience working closely with Executive and HR teams
Well-developed inter-personal communication and listening skills and conflict resolution skills
Formal qualifications related to role/industry is desirable
