FX Lead Artist

Position Overview:
The CG FX Lead artist is responsible for creating and conceptualizing CG FX Sequences as required, which meet the aesthetic, creative, and technical quality standards of the production. This position is also responsible for supervising and reviewing the efforts of assigned FX team, ensuring that deadlines are met and creative goals are achieved.

CG Supervisor

Position Overview:
We need someone who can supervise, manage, create and administer a digital production pipeline for current productions, requested tests, promos, and other small projects. This role will be responsible for helping with budgets as required by corporate, to attend client meetings and conference calls as required, and to participate in interviews with potential new staff.
The CG Supervisor will act as the CEO’s, Producer’s and Director of Production’s representative and will liaise between the Producer (or designees) and all digital production staff within the Producer’s facility and any other outside studios with respect to 3D and Digital Productions. The CG Supervisor will ensure that the Project has a consistent quality and style as established in consultation with the Art Director, Lead Character Designer, Directors and Producer, and will also ensure that the project is of the highest quality possible within the parameters of the production schedule and budget.

Essential Requirements:

Must have at least 5 years experience working in the animation industry (10 years preferred), including a comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of CG, including animation and VFX
Must have excellent communication, problem-solving and people management skills
Must be a motivated, flexible, team player who can inspire and provide leadership

Duties & Responsibilities:

Work with the CG departments to establish the overall CG pipeline, workflow, and directory structures for the production and possible new productions (tests, promos, etc.)
Coordinate scene retakes and review final shots with the Directors
Distribute work and set deadlines for the CG departments; manage and measure work, set clear objectives and monitor process, progress and results
Technically interpret the Director’s vision to the CG departments, while ensuring the artistic quality, content and continuity of the series is kept and that all artistic and technical components of the series are achieved
Pro-actively provide creative ideas and solutions for morale, technology, pipelines, manpower and interpreting artistic vision
Travel to designated locations when required by the Executive Producer and Producer
Incorporate artistic changes as per the Director, Executive Producer and Producer when requested.
Pro-actively learn new software and technology as it applies to animation and the digital industry
Schedule, mediate and compile a final Post-Mortem report which will include an analysis of the successes, failures and lessons learned during the production process.
Assist in managing CG departments by providing clear direction and leadership
Mentor CG department supervisors and individuals to encourage the growth of Bardel

Texture Artist

Position Overview:
The CG Texture artist is responsible for creating textures using both image and procedural based techniques, as well as creating shader networks, and UV layouts as required.

Technical Director

Position Overview:
We are looking for a Technical Director who will be responsible for the technical and programming aspects of an animated sequences which will meet the aesthetic, creative and technical quality standards of Bardel Entertainment.

Deliverables & Responsibilities:

Demonstrates a broad range of superior animation abilities in a collaborative environment to contribute to animation sequences, particularly in the area of lighting, images, effects and programming.
Create the lighting and ‘look’ for computer-generated objects and scenes.
Design and create images, effects and programs for digitally composited sequences.
Compile all of the various elements of a sequence through to completion.
Provide guidance for other team members and departments on technical direction and the programming aspects of the product.
Develop the design for the programming to perform in accordance with technical specifications.
Maintains and communicates a strong knowledge of innovative production technologies, software tools, and the capabilities / limitations of these technologies as they relate to technical direction and make recommendations for any programming and platform changes for the project.
Working with production management, develop the budget and schedule for the programming portion of the project.
Recruit new employees within the programming team as necessary to maintain optimal and efficient staffing on the production, particularly in relation to specialized roles; negotiate and complete employment agreements using template and freelance agreements for contractors, in partnership with Human Resources department.
Participate in the selection of techniques and tools to accomplish technical objectives as set out by the art direction.
Oversee user testing for the project.
Resolve any technical production issues that aside, particularly as they relate to programming elements.
Participate in technical planning to determine and address design requirements and issues.
Meet project deadlines and milestones, including any weekly quotas, as set by project leads and the production department.
Actively participate in team / department meetings.
Mentors and offer support to less experienced artists, providing them with guidance and instruction in the area of technical direction.

Skills & Qualifications Required:

A minimum of 2 years of professional work experience in technical direction required.
Knowledge of Maya 7 and After Effects required.
Experience in a variety of tasks related to technical direction (lighting, rendering, compositing) required.
Experience using Render Farm Managers, such as Smedge and Spider, an asset.
Post-secondary education in animation or fine arts an asset.

Responsibilities

Monitor, troubleshoot and optimize network rendering resources
Monitor and report resource utilization such as disk space, node usage, job saturation, etc.
Identify and diagnose failing renders and malfunctioning render machines
Monitor the render queue to maximize resource efficiency and handle job priorities

Create natural and supernatural effects (ie, water, smoke, dust, lightning, bubbles, fire, storms, shadows, blurs, explosions, etc) to contribute to the character, location, or atmosphere, providing suggestions and recommendations on technique and elements in the context of the scene.
Maintain and communicate a strong knowledge of innovative FX animation technologies.
Be confident in your creative vision but flexible and open-minded to alternate ideas. Assist in creating an “FX Production Style Guide” as-needed.
Meets project deadlines and milestones, as set by Series Director / Episodic Director and the production department.
Demonstrates good written and verbal communication, and exhibits a collaborative, supportive approach to working with other team members.

Assist Supervisors in resolving technical issues and to develop tools, scripts, plug-ins and any other frameworks needed to streamline the Lighting / Comp process.
Exercise a keen eye for creative continuity as well as QC all rendered layers for technical errors. Work with supervisor to resolve any discrepancies as discovered.
Add 2D EFX as required working with 3D EFX artists to achieve EFX requirements.
Ensure all final composited scenes are output in accordance with the technical requirements of editorial and for the project, ensuring that all required layers are included in the final composition, using approved light rigs to match look of show.
Meets project deadlines and milestones, including weekly quotas, as set by Series Director / Episodic Director and the production department.
Demonstrates good written and verbal communication, and exhibits a collaborative, supportive approach to working with other team members.

Lead Pipeline Developer

Reporting to the CTO, The Lead Pipeline Developer works with our team of TD’s and software developers to design solutions for a wide variety of production departments from story development through lighting and rendering. Delivering pragmatic, efficient software while making sure the underlying logic and data structures are robust, nimble and sustainable.
Critical to success in this role is an aptitude for working with technical and non-technical end users to understand their workflows and pain points and having the technical capacity to contribute at a hands on level to the development and support of the production technology toolset.

Objective

Work within the Technology department to build and maintain an efficient and seamless software toolset
Manage and develop software to support the creation of TV and Feature animation
Effectively manage the research and development process
Work with the CTO and other leads to implement long term software development goals and strategies.

Essential Job Functions

Collaborate with production department leads and supervisors to design technical solutions to complex production problems.
Breakdown pipeline development projects into development tasks and assign them to the team of TD’s and Developers.
Supervise the pipeline development, providing leadership on architecture and methods.
Ensure the scalability and reliability of production technology toolsets.
Design, build and support new and existing applications and pipeline tools where appropriate.
Initiate research and development, implement 3rd party solutions when available, and design and build prototypes for larger systems and applications.
Work with the Systems Engineering team to plan the infrastructure, operating systems, release mechanisms and revisions controls to support production technology toolsets.
Be involved in feasibility studies, requirements gathering and estimating tasks or projects
Collaborate with the Technology team to determine the design, structure, performance, etc. of the software
Help to improve standards of documentation, testing, quality, etc.
Perform code reviews and ensure that coding standards are defined and upheld
Communicate effectively with Technology and other departments

Requirements

Industry experience within Animimation, VFX or Film

Experience in Agile software development (Scrum, RUP, XP, Etc.)
4+ years as a technical supervisor within the VFX or Animation industry.
Ability to effectively manage small teams, making the most of individual strengths and ensuring staff retention.
Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
Experience with C++, Python, Qt, PyQT, databases etc.
Strong Knowledge of Maya, Nuke, (or similar) APIs would be advantageous.
Experience of software development on Windows and Linux.

Lighting Supervisor

Position Overview:
The Lighting & Compositing Supervisor’s primary responsibility is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the lighting and compositing teams ensuring that the lighting of the shots is created according to the creative direction and visual style of the animated series. This will require partnering with the Series Director, CG Supervisor, Lighting Artists, Compositing Leads and Production Manager. The Lighting & Compositing Supervisor will also participate in the creative and esthetic approach to the lighting to achieve the Directors vision for the series.

Primary Responsiblities:

Supervises the lighting and compositing teams to deliver the expected and desired look of the series.
Responsible for ensuring and maintaining the quality and desired look of the shots across the project.
Consult with CG Supervisor as to the technical feasibility of elements in the designs and suggest production friendly solutions that will maintain the vision of the series.
In consultation with the Director and CG Supervisor, assign work to artists based on their individual skills and strengths.
Responsible for reviewing the work of each artist on a regular basis and approving shots for submission to the Director.
Responsible for directing and guiding the overall lighting of shots on schedule and on budget, balancing artistic and productivity requirements, in tandem with production management.
Actively participates in the recruiting and staffing of the lighting and compositing team – assesses the work of prospective candidates for the hiring process and works with production management on hiring decisions.
Partners with production management to guide artists’ overall professional development, providing performance feedback, mentoring, resolving performance management issues and maintaining positive morale amongst the crew.
Attend all relevant meetings to promote effective communication throughout the production team.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Art/Science or Computer Graphics or equivalent work experience having gained an understanding of color theory, composition, lighting, aesthetics and how these apply to lighting and rendering in 3D.
8+ years of production experience with strong working knowledge of various software platforms including Maya, Shake, Nuke or other high end Animation software.
Previous experience in a leadership role on a television series.
Knowledge of UNIX and shell scripts.
Ability to plan and execute complex 3D lighting scenes including working with layers and passes, doing complex comps and optimizing scenes and renders.
Some photography experience a plus (understanding of composition, photography terms like depth of field, FOV, aperture, exposure, dynamic range).
Working experience with compositing software (Shake, Nuke, Combustion, AfterEffects or similar).
Highly proficient skills in technical problem solving.
Strong communication skills (written, verbal and interpersonal).
Demo reel should display a firm artistic understanding of Light and Composition. A shot break down listing jobs performed for each shot is required.
