Art Director – Feature Film

Are you an experienced Feature Film Art Director in the Animation industry, looking for your next project? We can’t share many details about the production just yet, but we are happy to announce that Bardel’s Vancouver studio will be working on a feature film starting summer 2018, and we are currently recruiting for an experienced Art Director to develop the overall visual style for our new feature.

What you will be doing:

Develop overall visual style & supervise the creation of all visual elements
Generate artwork in areas of specialization which may include character, environment, props, textures, mood, lighting, and story concepts.
Ensure feature film level quality for all backgrounds & designs, maintaining the Director’s overall vision for the film
Supervise design team & assign tasks, ensuring deadlines are met and production schedule is adhered to
Maintain show style & ensure there is a coherent and unified design approach to the production
Mentor & coach team of designers, clearly communicating the Director’s vision
Integrate colour style & textures into character designs & 3d models
Consult with 3D digital modelers & TD’s to ensure that 3D models accurately reflect the film’s design philosophy & that lighting, rendering, and special effects have a unified and consistent design approach
Participate & advise in all creative look of picture meetings
Partner with Line Producer and recruiting department to staff design team as needed
Ensure all artwork is delivered on time according to production schedule

What you bring with you:

Previous experience Art Directing on an Animated Feature Film
5+ years of Art Director experience in animation industry
Experience managing a large team of designers
Unique style – fun, appealing & a bit cartoony (similar to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs or Hotel Transylvania)
Knowledge of relevant software including photoshop
Collaborative team-focused approach

Create and conceptualize environment & background designs as required, which meet the aesthetic, creative, and technical quality standards of the production, in accordance with the production deadlines.
Demonstrate a broad range of drawing & painting abilities in a collaborative environment to conceptualize and create the overall look, attitude and style of the show.
Exercise a keen eye for creative continuity.
Meet project deadlines and milestones as set by Director and the production department.
Demonstrate good written and verbal communication, and exhibit a collaborative, supportive approach to working with other team members.
Attend & participate in all creative look of picture meetings.
Ensure preparation and presentation of all artwork deliverables are prepared for required meetings.

What you bring with you:

Previous experience in a design role on an Animated Feature Film preferred
3+ years of production design experience in film / animation industry
Strong drawing skills and colour fundamentals (illustration, painting, composition, human anatomy / organic forms, color theory, perspective, 2D & 3D design)
Knowledge of relevant software including photoshop
Ability to take creative and technical ideas and translate them into designs
Experience working under deadlines, multitasking, and solving problems

What you will be doing:

Translate scripts and stories into visual sequences based on notes and meetings with the Unit Director and other team members
Work with the Director and Storyboard Supervisor to illustrate the story, plan shots, and draw panels based on scripts
Produce strong boards that clearly convey the character’s intent, timing and action
Meet all project deadlines and milestones whilst following Unit Directors revision notes
Actively participate in team / department meetings.
Mentor and offer support to less experienced artists by providing them with guidance and instruction
Demonstrate good written and verbal communication, and exhibit a collaborative, supportive approach to working with other team members.

What you bring with you:

Previous experience in a storyboard role on an Animated Feature Film preferred
2+ years of production design experience in film / animation industry
Post-Secondary education qualification in animation, film or a related field
Strong drawing skills with a keen sense of design, appeal, character acting, timing, and composition
Software experience with programs such as Photoshop, Storyboard Pro, Shotgun etc.
Background in traditional hand-drawn animation, visual arts and life drawing with a solid grasp of movement and form
Experience with acting, live action or staging an asset
Experience working under deadlines, multitasking, and solving problems
Collaborative team-focused approach
