Machinima Artist (Heroes of the Storm)

99.9% of the world has no idea what “machinima” is. Are you part of the 0.1%? Do you make movies with game engines? Are you a natural filmmaker, able to convey themes and drive emotions while delivering key information? Can you capture characters so interesting and believable that viewers will send you hate mail when you kill them off? Are you bilingual, able to speak the languages of both film and games?
Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm in-game cinematics team has an opening for a dedicated machinima artist who will make movies within our proprietary game engine and tools. This is a rare opportunity, so if you’re one of the few with the ridiculously broad range of skills and experience that it takes; send us samples of your best work.

REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 3 years’ professional experience working in a game engine
A minimum of 1 year professional or hobbyist experience creating machinima
An in-depth understanding of game engine pipelines, technologies, and limitations
Comprehensive experience in film / video production, from concept to final delivery (and everything in between)
Strong video editing skills (Premiere / Avid / After Effects)
An uncontrollable urge to engage in visual storytelling
Film directing: live action, animated, in-game, 2D, 3D, whatever
Film editing for pacing, mood, and momentum
Strong interpersonal and creative collaboration skills, working with developers and writers to attain a vision
Scripting (Python, Lua, Maxscript, etc.)

Baking Skills

Senior machinima Finisher (Lighting & Compositing)

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for an exceptionally skilled finishing artist (lighting and compositing) to join its machinima cinematics team. The ideal candidate needs to demonstrate an understanding of how light, shadow, and color create environmental tone and mood and possess a thorough understanding of the needs of visual storytelling. This position requires a creative and technically proficient approach to composite shot development based on personal vision and existing / established properties. Blizzard Entertainment offers a fun, creative, and technically challenging environment with excellent compensation and a full range of benefits.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with the project director, art leads, and other technical artists to create a compelling finished look for a variety of environments while maintaining a consistent style throughout the game.
Anticipate different production constraints with various composite / lighting techniques and understand the budgeting restrictions associated with them.
Create, maintain, and communicate documentation for look guidelines and implementation techniques.

REQUIREMENTS

Advanced proficiency with Adobe After Effects, particularly color grading, compositing, and 2D lighting techniques
A minimum of 3 years’ professional experience as a compositor, and / or lighter
A portfolio or demo reel that demonstrates a keen eye for detail and the ability to use light, shadow and color to create a variety of tones and moods, as well as maintaining a high level of consistency
Self-motivation, good communication skills, and a great team-player

PLUSES

Have shipped AAA PC or console titles as a lighting / composite artist
Familiar with other compositing packages, such as Nuke
Familiar with 3dsmax, Maya, Photoshop and 3rd party lighting tools
Experience lighting real-time, and / or pre-rendered film or animation
Strong illustration or photography skills
Passionate gamer with experience playing a wide range of games; particularly World of Warcraft and Heroes of the Storm
Bear wrestling
