Lead Concept Artist

WORLD OF WARCRAFT

The lead concept artist must have a rich imagination coupled with a high degree of artistic skill. Their core responsibility is to lead a team of concept artists to create project defining artwork that expands on World of Warcraft’s (WoW) art style. This may include anything from a small prop, a full culture kit to a mood painting that defines the emotional intent of environment. The role requires a strong sense of caricature and design, color theory, mastery of human anatomy, composition, architecture and the ability to define and expand the WoW style. The lead concept artist will report to the senior art director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create project defining artwork that explores a wide range of styles and explores specific moods.
Collaborate closely with the art director to keep a consistent vision.
Provide team feedback to ensure the concept art department produces concept artwork at the expected quality level.
Actively identifies new areas for team learning and takes advantage of opportunities to develop the team.
Assist Production and other concept artists in coordinating concept tasks.
Partner with art management to ensure team is healthy and strong.
Provide creative feedback to external concept partners.

REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 10 years’ experience creating concept artwork for animation, film or videogames
A proven ability to visually solve problems in collaboration with the broader game team including other artists, art leads and design leads
Demonstrated ability to generate and iterate on artistic ideas quickly
Fearless ability to explore a wide variety of ideas that push the Wow style
Demonstrated ability to produce final illustration quality production paintings
A thorough understanding of 2D paint packages
Expert understanding of traditional art methodology including light, form, composition, and color theory

Art Director

WORLD OF WARCRAFT

Reporting to the senior art director, the art director will be their key partner in the execution of World of Warcraft’s (WoW) art. The art director role requires you to ignite others both as a leader and as an artist. As a leader you will be a motivational catalyst for the art team. As an artist, you will help define the look of new characters, environments, and architecture in the WoW style. In addition to channeling the visual direction of our senior art director to the art team, the role will act as one of the key communications conduits for design and programming.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create concept paintings, models, textures, and other benchmark assets that inspire others.
A proven ability to visually solve problems in collaboration with the broader game team including other artists, art leads, and design leads.
Partner with the senior art director to own and define assigned aspects of the project as directed.
Excellent ability to art direct multiple art disciplines.
Partner with production to ensure schedules and plans meet business and project needs.
Partner with art management to ensure team is healthy and strong.

REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 10 years’ experience crafting video game art
A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a lead artist or art director
Genuinely enjoys working with others
Takes initiative to solve problems with excellent follow through
Thrives in a collaborative work culture
Experience working with an art director to develop a unique and cohesive visual style
Works closely with game design to ensure art enhances the player experience

Character Rigger (Temporary)

CINEMATICS

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a motivated and experienced character rigger to join its award winning cinematics department. The ideal candidate would be a highly motivated artist who has built rigs and is capable of maintaining a high level of visual and technical quality for all characters. He / she must have an understanding of anatomy, muscles, cloth / hair behavior and be familiar with a scripted environment. Experience with simulation rigs and directable shot sims for hair and cloth are a bonus. This artist must be attuned to the needs of a production pipeline and those of the animators we support. Our team works in an intensely art driven environment and the candidate must be able to work collaboratively with other departments including modeling, animation, FX, and lighting.

REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 3 years’ experience rigging characters in Maya
Knowledge of character kinematics, deformations, and topology
Knowledge of character pipeline and workflow techniques
Experience in Python
Proficiency in technical problem solving
Demo reel (online preferred) showing rigging and technical proficiency

PLUSES

History of generating cloth / hair rigs and create art directed shot simulations
Some knowledge of layout, modeling, rigging, simulations, and animation tools and workflows currently used in the industry
Strong communications skills
Knowledge on subjects such as Maya tool development and pipeline design
Able to generate tools to facilitate the rigging and simulation pipeline
Passion for Blizzard games and cinematics

Environment Modeler (Temporary)

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a well-rounded full-time 3D environment artist to work with its award winning pre-rendered cinematics team. This artist must have skills to work well within a team and be able to make solid decisions with regards to asset creation and design. This person will be responsible for learning our pipeline and creating assets that work cleanly within the pipeline with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has a “do whatever it takes” attitude, and continuously seeks to improve their own skills and abilities as well as the team’s pipeline with regards to 3D asset creation.

REQUIREMENTS

Able to model and sculpt amazing hard-surface and organic 3D assets with or without concepts
Interpret direction with ease
Efficient and clean UVW mapping and mesh retopology skills
Communicates priorities to supervisor / production manager and the team for developing clear work plans
Excellent design and compositional skills
Self-motivation, good communications skills, and a great team-player attitude
Able to filter and evaluate criticism on a professional level
Understand up and downstream teams pipeline / workflow
Maintain production schedule and / or communicate any concerns
Provide ideas to better tools / pipeline / workflows and provide feedback for new technology
Able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and initiative, autonomy and self-sufficiency
Understanding of the visual style of Blizzard cinematics and a passion to push them to the next level

Surfacing Artist (Temporary)

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for an exceptionally skilled surfacing artist for its cinematics department. Candidates should have extensive experience working with painting tools to achieve stylized to photo-real surfaces on computer-generated artwork. The ideal candidate must be organized and creative, with the ability to solve problems efficiently.

REQUIREMENTS

Work closely with the show leads and the surfacing supervisor to provide high fidelity texture maps for production assets
Provide feedback on UVs done by modeling artists
Able to use captured high resolution references in production assets
Contribute to an organized texture library
Work closely with modeling, look development artists and lighters to achieve the desired results
Interpret art direction from multiple sources, on occasion
A minimum of 4 years’ feature film / VFX / animation production experience as a texture painter or similar position
Expert knowledge of high-end software such as Mari, Maya, Photoshop, and 3D paint packages – BodyPaint / Deep Paint, and UV layout
Full understanding of texture map properties in relation to their shading and lighting qualities
Able to layout UV’s and create high-quality texture maps, including diffuse, specular, displacement, bump, and control map
Able to shoot texture and reference with DSLR camera
Able to collaborate and bring creativity to the team of modelers, look-dev artists, and lighters

PLUSES

Experience in shading and lighting in RenderMan
Experience with Nuke
Understanding of Blizzard Entertainment’s cinematic visual style
Familiar with Blizzard games and cinematics
