Environment Artist – Overwatch

Description

As an environment artist on Blizzard’s Overwatch, you’ll inject character into environments by creating art that brings them to life in a way that is both detail-oriented and consistent with the handcrafted art styles that our games are known for.
Knowledge of Blizzard’s unique shape language and liberal use of color will allow you to work collaboratively with a team of highly skilled artists and designers to breathe life into the world. Your broader experience with game development and building well designed levels will help you work collaboratively with level designers to ensure that you are always putting gameplay first when it comes to developing strong, fun areas to play in.
In short, you’ll be part of a close-knit, collaborative community of artists, engineers and designers whose sole goal is to make a truly immersive game experience.

SO, WHAT WILL BE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES IN THIS ROLE?

Use concept art inspiration to create game assets that make our environments come alive.
Use next-gen materials and pipelines to forge assets for use in the game engine.
Iterate on game assets with production artists via prototyping and group critiques.
OH, YOU CAN DO THAT IN YOUR SLEEP, YOU SAY? WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS, YOU ASK?
A minimum of 1 year experience in game development as an artist specializing in hard surface, props, or organic modeling using Maya, Photoshop, or 3DS Max
Exceptional understanding of next generation asset creation pipelines and tools
An exceptional understanding of form, shape, structure, and silhouette in regard to modeling
Superior eye for light, shade, color, and detail in creating texture maps
Self-motivation, good communication skills, and a great team-player attitude
Able to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary art team to help bring environments to life within the vision of the game design
Proven problem-solving / prototyping ability
Able to effectively collaborate with game designers and programmers
Understanding of the visual style of Blizzard games and a passion to push it to the next level
Have shipped AAA PC or console titles as an environment artist.

A passion for video games

Senior Machinima Finisher (Light/Comp)

Description

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for an exceptionally skilled finishing artist (lighting and compositing) to join its machinima cinematics team. The ideal candidate needs to demonstrate an understanding of how light, shadow, and color create environmental tone and mood and possess a thorough understanding of the needs of visual storytelling. This position requires a creative and technically proficient approach to composite shot development based on personal vision and existing / established properties. RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with the project director, art leads, and other technical artists to create a compelling finished look for a variety of environments while maintaining a consistent style throughout the game.
Anticipate different production constraints with various composite / lighting techniques and understand the budgeting restrictions associated with them.
Create, maintain, and communicate documentation for look guidelines and implementation techniques.

REQUIREMENTS

Advanced proficiency with Adobe After Effects, particularly color grading, compositing, and 2D lighting techniques
A minimum of 3 years’ professional experience as a compositor, and / or lighter
A portfolio or demo reel that demonstrates a keen eye for detail and the ability to use light, shadow and color to create a variety of tones and moods, as well as maintaining a high level of consistency
Self-motivation, good communication skills, and a great team-player

PLUSES

Have shipped AAA PC or console titles as a lighting / composite artist
Familiar with other compositing packages, such as Nuke
Familiar with 3dsmax, Maya, Photoshop and 3rd party lighting tools

Art Training Manager

Description

The art training manager will be responsible for working with Blizzard art leadership to develop content and deliver training to meet our production needs, including proprietary tools, workflows and processes.
Blizzard Academy specializes in helping others learn and grow and we are looking for someone who shares this passion. Our goal is to provide opportunities to gain exposure to new ideas, new tools and new ways of approaching what we do best – make great games.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Act as academy art advocate, the key point of contact between academy and development teams. Partner with the art directors, managers, and leads on applicable training for artists.
Help define training objectives, schedule, resource requirements, and deliverables in support of developing the art community at Blizzard.
Coach, mentor, and motivate internal instructors, while keeping projects on track.
Ensure classes are properly scheduled, delivered, and exceed expectations, as well as, following up with related course materials.
Develop or support the creation of art training documentation (including video documentation). Craft visually-engaging materials to announce training / enrichment events that will be seen across the studio.
Evangelize and enlist speakers (both internal and external) across art community.
Manage and publish art newsletter for the development community, working with project teams and support groups to solicit content.

REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 3 years’ experience in game development
Actively tracks new developments in the art community and the creative industry for learning opportunities
Experience managing, coaching, and mentoring game development artists
Exceptional verbal and written communications skills
Exceptional attention to detail and follow-up
Experience with staffing and team building
Good cross-disciplinary communication experience between engineering, production, design, and art
