Machinima Technical Artist

Description

Blizzard Entertainment’s in-game cinematics team has an opening for a dedicated technical artist to join the Machinima group. This person will help make in-game cut scenes and other movies using our proprietary game engines and tools.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Rigging character and prop assets.
Producing visual effects in the World of Warcraft (WoW) style in both 2D and 3D software environments.
Troubleshooting basic technical problems.
Strong general knowledge of the 3D production process.
Familiar with the WoW universe and story arcs, and be able to reproduce the art style in their work.

REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 4 years’ experience with film, game and / or commercial production pipelines
Scripting (Python, Lua, Maxscript, Jscript, etc.)
Able to author and support tools in a production environment
A strong understanding of character rigging and rigging pipelines
Production knowledge of Maya, 3D Studio Max and Adobe After Effects
Experience with particle systems, rigid body dynamics, and procedural systems
Working knowledge of game engines and game editors. As well as an in-depth understanding of game engine pipelines, technologies, and limitations
Strong interpersonal and creative collaboration skills, working with developers and writers to attain a vision

Animation TD

Description

Blizzard Entertainment is seeking a talented, motivated, and experienced animation technical director (TD) to join our cinematics team. The animation TD must have a thorough knowledge of animation, rigging and simulation tools and workflows currently used in the CG / VFX industry, as well as related cross pipeline tools and workflows. They will work with technical and art supervisors to determine workflows, tool requirements, and asset needs for the animation, rigging and simulation teams. This individual will also implement basic tools and workflow automation. They must be strong communicators!

REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 2 years’ experience in developing rigging and animation tools using python and pyqt / pyside
Expert working knowledge of current industry animation, rigging, and simulations practices, techniques and technologies
Expert in character deformation practices
Expert working knowledge of Maya
Strong understanding of the CG production process, from asset creation to final compositing
Strong problem-solving skills
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in developing tools and implementing process improvements in a CG production environment
Strong verbal and written communications skills
Strong desire to function in a technical support role

Back End Technical Director

Description

Blizzard Entertainment is seeking a talented, motivated, and experienced back end technical director (TD) to join our cinematics team. The back end TD must have a thorough knowledge of lighting and rendering tools, look development, matte painting, compositing, and related industry standard workflows, as well as related cross pipeline tools and workflows. They will work with technical and artistic supervisors to determine workflows, tool requirements, and asset needs for the back end teams. This individual will also implement artist tools and workflow automation. They must be excellent communicators.

REQUIREMENTS

Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to CG back end disciplines
Strong understanding of the CG production process, from asset creation to final compositing
Excellent working knowledge of RenderMan, Vray, Redshift, and / or other renderers
Clear working knowledge of lighting workflows and tools in CG Packages (e.g. Maya, Katana)
Proficient python development skills and debugging techniques
Outstanding problem-solving skills under pressure
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in developing tools, and implementing process improvements in a CG production environment
Very comfortable within a Unix / Linux environment

R&D Engineer, Pipeline

Description

The Blizzard Entertainment cinematics R&D pipeline group is looking for a new software engineer. The pipeline team’s mission is to improve communications, efficiency, and happiness of artists and engineers within Blizzard cinematics in the creation of pre-rendered and in-game animations across all IPs. We focus on the department’s pipeline definition, asset system, scene management, production tracking, software build / deployment, dailies, and related tools.
This skilled programmer will be writing tools and libraries that support all developers within Blizzard cinematics. This position also requires getting hands dirty with administration and system management. A generalized skillset, flexibility, and a willingness to learn on the job as the pipeline changes (as it always does) are critical to this position.

This is a full-time staff position at our office in Irvine, California.

Responsibilities

Create libraries in Python that form the core of the studio.
Deliver tools that ease software maintenance and deployment.
Package and deploy third party tools like Qt, Python, and RV.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, related field or equivalent work experience
Expert level use of Python for tools and libraries
Managing projects with source control, especially Git

Concept Artist (Temp)

Description

Blizzard Entertainment is seeking a talented, motivated, and experienced concept artist to join its development team, The Anvil. The concept artist must be experienced in designing creatures, characters, environments, props and FX Studies for both science fiction and fantasy genres. Work methods should include quick-sketching, clean line art, photo collaging and full painting. Besides a strong understanding of anatomy and perspective the ideal candidate should also possess a solid grasp of the unique elements and distinctive visual styles of Blizzard Entertainment’s universes. Proficiency in any of the major 3D packages is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create concepts for various projects as assigned. Concept work would range from, but are not limited to:
Characters, environment, props, lighting, and FX studies.
Black and white sketches to fully painted images as needed for the project.
May also be done using a variety of 3D packages to model and render assets.
Create in-game art for Blizzard Entertainment’s development teams on occasion.
Work with producers to complete tasks by the assigned due dates.
Work with art lead to achieve the necessary final image quality.

REQUIREMENTS

Superior eye for light, value, composition, color, staging, and detail in environmental design

This artist will be focused on creating awe-inspiring artwork for all of Blizzard Entertainment’s intellectual properties (IPs). The ideal candidate has extensive experience creating digital illustrations in a variety of different visual styles. A solid grasp of foundational art skills, color theory, human and creature anatomy, design theory and Blizzard Entertainment’s IPs are essential. The artist must have expert command of Photoshop or an equivalent painting program. The perfect candidate works well in an environment of peers who are passionate about creating awesome art, takes constructive criticism very well, and can hit deadlines. Title and salary will be consummate with experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create high profile illustrations for Blizzard’s IPs for a variety of purposes including but not limited to key art, magazine covers, novel covers, marketing and promotional materials.
Occasionally create concept and in-game art for Blizzard’s development teams.

Sculptor (Traditional and Digital)

Description

Blizzard Entertainment’s creative development department is looking to bolster their team with a new sculptor. The desired candidate needs to have a combination of traditional and digital skills in creating highly detailed models. You will team up with our sculpting director and other team members to produce an array of products with the high quality and precision all Blizzard properties are known for. We need your help to bring our characters and props to life: fantastical art pieces that embrace the often realistic or surreal artistic style of our video game properties.
If you have a strong passion for building 3D product, and come from a background of using traditional wax and clay, and have a working knowledge of digital sculpting programs like Zbrush, Rhino or Mudbox, then this could be the perfect role for you.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create highly detailed statues, toys, props, and other product from Blizzard games.
Take ownership of a project from start to finish.
Work with art directors from each IP to fully capture the vision and detail needed to convey their property’s story, emotion, and scale.
Give and receive feedback when translating 2D art into 3D models.
Work with licensing to help clean up or fine tune outside projects.
Maintain positive working relationships with art teams and art directors.
Manage time and projects to ensure on time deliveries.

REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a commercial sculptor, preferably with both digital and traditional experience
Zbrush knowledge and skills
Capable of producing sculptures with extreme detail
Able to collaborate and “tag team” projects that are under tight deadlines
Able to take critiques at any stage in the sculpting process
Have a positive attitude, open minded, and trustworthy
Demonstrated experience providing solid input and embracing problem solving while working with other teams towards creative solutions that will speed up production while maintaining integrity and creativity
