Lead Layout Artist (Feature Animation Montreal)

Job Description

Cinesite Montreal is seeking a Senior/Lead Layout Artist for the Feature Animation division.

Duties

The main focus of the position will be to build the foundation of a shot, pulling together the various objects to compose the CG scene while executing the staging, blocking, camera work and stereoscopic camera setup that make up the foundation of a successful shot or sequence of shots throughout the film.

Skills

Strong Maya knowledge with good problem solving skills and a solid understanding of a stereoscopic feature animation pipeline
Good attention to detail and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues in order to maintain continuity within the sequence
Previous experience of scene layout to match previs or storyboard reference is preferred
Technical problem solving is key to the role so basic Mel and Python scripting is ideal but not required
A strong knowledge of the principles of cinematic staging, blocking and camera work.
A working knowledge of stereoscopic cameras and shot-to-shot depth continuity
Previous experience in animation blocking is advantageous
Ability to work independently as well as a strong communicator and a good team player
Previous film industry experience is preferred

Job Description

Cinesite Montreal is seeking Character and Set/Prop Modelers for Feature Animated Films. Ideal candidate should be highly organized and motivated with the desire to work within a top quality and fast paced animation team.

Duties

• Create digital assets from supplied reference material and/or concept artwork. Apply and adjust UV’s, working closely with texture artists to ensure UV’s are positioned and scaled efficiently.
• Work with animators and riggers to resolve technical issues and optimize assets for animation and liaise with Lighting TDs to ensure assets are optimized for render.
• Work with the layout team to build assets that will maximize stereo throughout the film.
• Be able to flag and solve potential delays or problems to stay on budget and on schedule

Skills

• Thorough understanding of the modeling process and the ability to both interpret designs and accurately match reference material
• Excellent Maya polygon and subdivision surface modeling skills and the ability to apply and manage UV’s
• Previous experience creating stylized characters, organic and hard surface digital models
• Excellent understanding of the feature animation pipeline from modeling through texturing, animation and rendering
• Ability to work well in a team and solve asset specific issues independently
• Experience with sculpting packages
• Experience creating corrective blendshapes
• Possess basic texturing skills and an understanding of rigging techniques
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Organized and methodical

• Review and give feedback on topology of the 3D models

Skills

• 3+ years of experience working in the animation industry, including comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of CG, pipeline and associated software/plugins. Feature Animation or complex Television experience preferred.
• Experience in a variety of Maya rigging techniques, and the ability to optimize performance of rigs
• Advanced to Mid-Level hero character/creature rigging experience with a Maya based pipeline
• Expert in Maya, with skills in Python scripting

Duties

• Be the driving force for the creation and adjustments of the Feature Animation Rigging Pipeline, supported by an excellent technical team
• Work with the team to create top quality body and facial rigs that will maintain the desired quality
• Create and maintain an atmosphere where the objective is to create an engaging animated film of top quality, while managing and reducing the complexities of production.
• Work with the Production Designer, CG Supervisor and the Animation Team to ensure that the film is designed to maximize the budget and schedule
• Ensure that the project maintains a consistent quality and style, as established in consultation with the creative leads
• Along with the Creative Team, establish a rig that fully supports an animation style that reflects the tone of the film, and maintain the style throughout the film
• Work with the department leads to establish the overall pipeline, workflow and directory structure for the animation and associated departments
• Distribute work and establish deadlines for the rigging department, measure quality of work and create clear objectives to monitor progress and results
• Provide creative ideas and solutions for the film on both a visual and technical level
• Mentor the rigging team to encourage the growth of the division
• Design and script utilities/tools/plugins
• Review and give feedback on topology of the 3D models
• Be able to flag and solve potential delays or problems to stay on budget and on schedule

Skills

• Bachelor degree or diploma in Film, Computer Graphics or related field required
• 5+ years of experience working in the animation industry, including comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of CG, pipeline and associated software/plugins. Feature Animation experience required.
• Experience in a variety of Maya rigging techniques, and the ability to optimize performance of rigs
• Advanced hero character/creature rigging experience with a Maya based pipeline

• Proficiency with Linux is required

Work closely with the Director, Head of Story, Art Director and other members of the production team to convey the essence of the story, scene structure, character emotion and create action and humor in alignment with the direction of the film
Hand on the existing script, including adding visual humor and heart to create three-dimensional characters that will resonate with the audience
Plan cinematography and staging; choosing initial camera placement and angles; defining action and camera movement
Solve story and structure problems
Follow and strengthen the character arcs throughout the film

Skills

Bachelor degree preferred
5 years professional experience required, Feature Animation or Animated Television experience preferred
Ability to produce strong boards that clearly convey the character’s intent, timing and action
Strong drawing skills with a sense of design, appeal, character acting and composition
Ability to work digitally, including in Photoshop, Storyboard Pro or similar
Ability to create action and humor expressed through drawing
Experience on multiple Feature Films and/or Television Series as a Story Artist
