Lookdev/Shading Artist

Description

About the Position

As the lookdev/shading artist you will create and develop an asset’s look to match the show’s creative goals in a timely manner. You will be shading and texturing assets (characters, props, sets, etc.) and will assist with establishing the look development process together with designers, the director and other stakeholders. You will be working together with the modelling and lighting teams to ensure shaded assets are passed across departments efficiently, as well as working with shading TDs to develop our studio shaders library.

Responsibilities

Shade and texture assets based on the production style, designs and color scripts
Collaborate with modelling team to ensure assets meet production look and requirements
Build and optimize each asset’s shading networks to achieve both look and efficient render time
Interpret and implement notes and feedback from supervisor and directors in a timely way
Collaborate across disciplines, within the department and with other departments including design, lighting and matte painting
Work with shading TDs to develop the look of our proprietary shaders
Help create and maintain the production shader library
Mentor and train other shading artists
Collaborate respectfully and professionally with artists
Actively participate in production-related meetings by offering thoughts and ideas
Keep current on shading techniques and technology
Recommend any team training needs to modelling supervisor
Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner
Be a positive and creative force on the team

Qualifications

3+ years of experience in animation or film industry
Proficiency in using Maya and Photoshop is required
Experience in Mudbox and ZBrush is required
Experience shading using Renderman is a benefit
Strong artistic skills and a detail-oriented eye
Strong problem solving skills and ability to work collaboratively
Good communication skills, active listening, and ability to give and receive feedback and follow directions
Work within production requirements and time frame
Accepts accountability for own actions
Able to meet production requirements on time and to standards
Able to take direction, collaborate, and be a team player
Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner
Able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
Able to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently

Senior FX Artist – Maya

Description

About the Position

As a senior FX artist you create high-calibre dynamic and riveting visual effects while meeting production deadlines. You provide guidance and mentorship to the FX team and report regularly to the VFX supervisor informing them of any concerns or new developments.

Responsibilities

In collaboration with the VFX supervisor, construct creative solutions for recurring visual effects in the production
Create and compose effects elements as assigned by the supervisor/director
Create and deliver effects for the series in a timely manner
Identify to the VFX supervisor problems that could potentially affect timelines and delivery schedules
Adhere to the studio’s pipeline way of working.
Ensure that all production deadlines are met while producing work at a quality level that meets production requirements
Participate in VFX meetings and adjust/refine effects as indicated by VFX supervisor or VFX department head
Anticipate, communicate, and troubleshoot any creative or technical issues with assistance from key stakeholders
Assist with and complete production-related assignments
Keep current on effects techniques and technology
Ensure the VFX supervisor/VFX department head’s instructions are carried through
Recommend any team training needs to VFX supervisor
Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner
Be a positive and creative force on the team

Qualifications

3+ years of experience in animation or film industry
Proficiency in Maya’s particle and fluid systems is a must
Proficiency in Nuke and/or Fusion is a must.
Knowledge in Python or MEL is a benefit

Junior Pipeline Technical Director

About the Position

As the junior pipeline technical director, you research new technologies, guide them straight into production and see how they affect the look and feel of the animation we do. This is an ideal opportunity for a junior developer or a savvy technical artist to get your foot in the door of the pipeline world.

Responsibilities

Develop pipeline tools and processes to meet production needs
Ensure tools and processes meet the global pipeline direction
Work with the pipeline supervisor to design and prioritize production needs
Research new techniques to meet those needs
Design and develop new tools to fit and improve our pipeline
Support production to ensure deadlines are met
Maintain, debug and update existing tools when needed
Test and debug tools and process to ensure stability and usability
Work with software engineers and IT team to debug and test hardware and software
Educate artists on how to work with the pipeline
Create and update documentation explaining our processes and tools
Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner
Be a positive and creative force on the team
Lead by example and set the bar

Qualifications

2+ years of experience in animation or visual effects for film or television
1+ years of experience developing for Maya, Nuke or Houdini is required
Strong experience in Python is required
Excellent communication, troubleshooting and debugging skills
Experience with render farms is a plus
Experience in designing and building database systems is a benefit
Experience in Django, Flask or web development is a benefit
Working knowledge of C/C++ a benefit

Senior Director of Technology

Description

About the Position

The senior director of technology is responsible for the IT and technology (software and pipeline) strategies and teams for DHX Media’s content division.
As the senior director of technology, you will bring solid leadership and technical credentials to DHX, along with a results-driven and collaborative approach.
In this role, you will lead the overall direction of the technology teams, which include systems administration, network/storage operations, database administration, software development and pipeline development and maintenance. You will be responsible for leading the strategy for designing, implementing and maintaining the Linux and Windows production environments for the animation studios at DHX. You will ensure that the technology infrastructure effectively and efficiently supports DHX’s creative/production business operations and strategic direction.

Responsibilities

Oversee deployment and management of mission critical systems
Plan scalability/capacity architecture to support business growth every year
Assess and approve design recommendations for software and hardware projects in collaboration with the SVP
Steer the technology towards inter-studio collaboration with a greater sharing of resources
Infrastructure Management

Provide overall direction, plan and budget management for hardware/software infrastructure needs between production, pipeline, IT and software departments
Follow through to ensure that all infrastructure services are meeting or exceeding business requirements
Lead the infrastructure design of the new studio building in Vancouver and the transition from two studios to one, meeting the varous production infrastructure needs
Matrix across the studio, working with other departments to define hardware/software needs with consideration to issues such as budget, deployment schedules and resource availability
Establish and maintain relationships with vendors and approve sourcing decisions, expenditure and planning to ensure production stability
Business Strategy and Management

Lead the technology strategic planning process
Collaborate in defining team goals based on production requirements
Lead the integration of technology across the division, identifying where common platforms and solutions can be leveraged
Assess current tools/pipelines/software to identify current state, and recommend alternatives where appropriate along with budgetary requirements
Stay abreast of new technologies, including open source, to understand possible implementations in the studios
Provide cost effective solutions with well-articulated risks to allow for the best understanding of how to meet business needs.

Customer Relationship Management

Establish and maintain relationships with supported business units and their development and production teams
Oversee regular needs assessment of the division’s infrastructure to ensure support, services, and solutions are effectively meeting the needs of production
Act as the escalation point for operational issues

Qualifications

Minimum 10 years progressive technology experience including at least 7 years of experience leading teams in an operations environment
10+ years of experience of managing systems design/architecture with both Windows and Linux server support
Experience of working with pipeline technology in the animation industry—specifically, experience working with Maya, Shotgun, Flash, Toonboom and Renderman would be an advantage
Ability to manage large infrastructure projects—a history of progressively complex project management experience is a plus
Direct experience with managing multi-site production environments.
Strong leadership and team building and development skills are essential
Strong interpersonal and communication skills including both oral and written proficiency.
Must be able to present effectively to and facilitate meetings with a wide variety of audiences including senior management, business units, development teams and technology partners
Strong technical aptitude for operating systems, databases, networks, etc., including vendor hardware
Experience in large server environments (1000+ employees)
