About the Position

DHX Studios – Vancouver is looking for an experienced FX Lead to join our team! As an FX Lead, you will be the creative and technical eye of the show, reviewing and supporting lighting, FX and compositing stages of the production. You will work closely with the Directors to achieve the look of the show. The ideal candidate is an experienced artist with a creative eye and the ability to guide and support their team.

Responsibilities

Create and deliver FX for the series and each episode within scheduled timelines
Ensure that all production deadlines are met while producing work at a quality level in keeping with production requirements
Identify obstacles that could potentially affect the timelines and delivery schedules
Research and develop efficient techniques to create unique FX, animator FX rigs, and proxy FX rigs for previs
Work with FX team to ensure work gets communicated and executed in a timely manner
Collaborate with Compositing and Lighting Supervisors to ensure efficiency between departments
Construct creative solutions for recurring FX in the production to be implemented in animation
Participate in FX meetings and adjust/refine FX as required
Anticipate, communicate, and troubleshoot any creative or technical issues with assistance from key stakeholders
Oversee the daily activities and capabilities of the FX team
Partner with Production Management to guide artists’ overall professional development, providing performance feedback, mentoring, assist with resolving performance issues and maintaining positive morale amongst the crew
Foster a healthy and creative work environment
Create documentation for animator FX rigs
Accurately estimate time and resource needs to ensure project deadlines are met

Qualifications

4+ years of experience in the animation or film industry, specifically in FX departments
Excellent understanding of CGI production and pipelines
Excellent understanding of Maya’s FX systems (particles, fluids, bifrost) is a must
Excellent understanding of compositing packages using Nuke is a must
Excellent organizational, project management and communication skills are a must
Experience in Shotgun is preferred

Harmony Technical Artist – 2D

About this Position

DHX Studios Vancouver is looking for a Harmony Technical Artist to support the development of our Harmony Pipeline! As a Harmony Technical Artist, you will work closely with the production, artists, and pipeline teams, to ensure the smooth and efficient running of our Harmony productions. The ideal candidate will also have a solid understanding of 2D animation techniques and production, ideally from direct experience in the industry.

Responsibilities

Help design, build, and maintain an efficient 2D animation production pipeline
Identify and fix any holes in the pipeline
Develop a number of tools, scripts, and/or plugins to help automate or improve workflow
Work on integration and naming conventions with our in-house tracking system
Check in with a team of artists to help identify tools that are needed, including possible “wish list” items
Quickly and accurately import, convert, and create new production assets for the 2D animation team, including rigging characters and objects
Problem solve and work with artists, production, and pipeline teams to discover the best solutions
Deliver polished and functional assets to the 2D animation team within production deadlines
Develop content creation guidelines and help enforce them through tools and reminders as necessary
Collaborate with animators to design new rigs that best fit their needs, and assist with fixing existing rigs as necessary
Understand and assist in speeding up slow rigs, or simplifying complex rigs

Qualifications

2-5+ years’ experience as an animation Technical Artist and/or Technical Director
Strong scripting and technical artist abilities
Effective and professional communication skills
In-depth experience with character rigging in ToonBoom Harmony 12.1, including full character turnaround deformation rigs
Competency (preferably fluency) in Adobe Photoshop, Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe Flash CS5+, Perforce, and Shotgun
Hard coding skills are a benefit

About the Position

As an Animator you create high-caliber, dramatic and action-oriented character animation while at the same time meeting production deadlines. You have a good understanding of the principles of animation, movement and timing skills. You are integral to the animation team and are enthusiastic at developing your skills. You are able to take direction and address notes willingly in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

Work from storyboard/animatic to create animation sequences as assigned by the Director
Strong understanding of the principles of animation, lip-sync, and camera composition
Complete assigned animation within scheduled time frame
Block movements in rough animation, refine and polish to completion in final animation
Address required revisions and modify shots as requested
Based on the production schedule and resources available, ensure and maintain the quality, style and continuity of your animation
Anticipate, communicate, and troubleshoot any creative or technical issues with assistance from key stakeholders
Actively participate in production-related meetings by offering thoughts and ideas
Assist with and complete production-related assignments
Keep current on animation techniques and technology
Ensure the Lead Animator/Director’s instructions are carried through
Recommend any team training needs to Lead Animator

Qualifications

2+ year of experience in animation or film industry
Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience an asset
Proficient in 3D animation packages
Solid understanding of character posing, character animation lip sync and camera composition
Able to take direction, collaborate, and be a team player
Able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
Able to work alone and collaboratively, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure
Encourage feedback and new initiatives
Able to adapt to multiple animation styles

Lighting Supervisor 3D

About the Position

As a Lighting Supervisor you will oversee the daily activities of the lighting team and ensure deliverables are completed on time. You will work closely with the Art Director, VFX Supervisor, Lighting artists, and various other teams to successfully meet the show’s technical and creative needs.

Responsibilities

Lead the lighting team to deliver the show needs on time and to the expected quality standards
Ensure and maintain the expected render time, quality and style across the show and series
Communicate and work closely with the Series Director, Art Director VFX supervisor, Shading leads, and the pipeline team to ensure an efficient and creative production
Establish lookdev lighting environment to match the show’s needs on an episodic and series level
Create and establish an efficient framework for both lighting and compositing teams
Support, assist and mentor other team members
Review, debug and improve other team members’ assets, workflows and techniques
Meet production deadlines and maintain regular communication with the production team
Manage the light and compositing team, assign workload, set and maintain standards of all work completed
Assist with the creation of documentation for lighting guidelines and techniques
Implement workflow, scripts and tools as needed
Communicate with other supervisor and team leads on concerns and production issues ahead of time
Be a positive and creative force in building a healthy work and team culture
Provide constructive criticism, wisdom, guidance and feedback that will help others further their career development

Qualifications

5+ years of experience in animation or film industry in lighting, compositing
Previous experience in lighting and/or compositing in animation episodic TV or film
Good understanding of modelling, texturing, shading, lighting, compositing and rendering workflows
Experience in Maya is a must
Experience in Nuke is a must
Experience in V-Ray is a benefit
Experience in episodic production methodologies is a benefit
Ability to take direction, collaborate and be a team player
Ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas in a professional and positive manner
Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure
Encourage feedback and new initiatives
Ability to adapt to multiple show styles
Must be flexible, open to direction and able to embrace change
