Pipeline Technical Director

Description

DHX Media (Vancouver) Ltd. is an award-winning animation studio, which has produced over 300 half hours of original children’s shows. We’re looking for a Pipeline Technical Director to work closely with production, department leads and IT to develop and maintain a Toon Boom Harmony animation pipeline. You’ll be the point person for Harmony in our facility – establishing studio wide procedures for design, builds and rigging, troubleshooting scenes, creating processes for Maya and Harmony integration and anything else that we can think of that has the word Harmony in it! This is a pivotal role which requires expert knowledge of Harmony with serious experience in the production of animated television series.

Responsibilities Include:

Supporting the overall needs of production, pipeline and toolsets;
Overseeing the development, maintenance and optimization of tools used in production;
Acting as a primary support for technical problems in the production department;
Providing technical solutions to artists and supervisors, working closely with the animation crew;
Working with R&D engineering and programmers to resolve digital production asset management issues that may arise during production;
Managing the production pipeline integration with the production tracking and asset management system;
Maya asset integration into Harmony scenes;
Developing documentation and implementing training/mentoring to enhance skill-sets of current crew;
Collaborating with production supervisors to plan and establish methodologies that meet or exceed the requirements of each production.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Experience in a Toon Boom (Harmony, Storyboard Pro) network, client-server pipeline environment;
Sound technical knowledge of Toon Boom Harmony SDK and scripting capabilities;
2+ years of experience in Maya;
Knowledge of After Effects, Nuke, Flash, and Qube! is an asset;
Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Animation or a related field desired;
Able to take direction and work collaboratively with a positive attitude;
Able to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, to anticipate hurdles and problem-solve;
Well organized and efficient, able to juggle shifting priorities;
Strong work ethic with the ability to meet performance objectives within a fast-paced production environment.

Feature Storyboard Artists

We’re looking for inspired and talented Feature Storyboard Artists with previous production experience for a 2D animated feature to start in June and July 2015! You’ll be working collaboratively with the Director, Storyboard Supervisor, and other board artists on the team to conceptualize the story and create the blueprint for all artistic departments to follow.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Previous experience as a Storyboard Artist on a series or a 2D feature film (preferred);
Ability to work digitally (Cintiq with Sketchbook, Photoshop or Flash, etc.);
Strong drawing skills and sense of design, character and composition;
Strong sense of acting and timing;
Ability to organize and manage time effectively to meet deadlines;
Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner;
Creative problem solving skills;

Feature Location Designer – 2D

We are currently seeking a Feature Location Designer for a 2D animated feature. The Location Designer will provide Key and Background scene designs and colour styling in consultation with, and approval by, the Director according to the style of the production. In such a fast-paced environment with a large volume of production work on the go, the ideal candidates must be an organized team player who are capable of keeping track of all tasks and have a good sense of humor.

Responsibilities Include:

Ensuring key and layout location designs are suitable in function and form for the style required by the Director;
Producing designs that must show strong understanding of perspective, proportion, balance, dimension and dynamism;
Organizing and managing work and files efficiently;
Other tasks and responsibilities as requested and for the completion of the project.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Degree/Diploma at a recognized Animation school &/or equivalent experience;
Comprehension and knowledge of general and/or classical animation, character animation and Flash;
Experience in 3D Design is an asset;
Ability to multi-task and prioritize;
Effective and professional communication skills both verbal and written;
Self motivated with demonstrated initiative;
Thrive in a team based environment.

Production Manager

Description

DHX Media (Vancouver) Ltd. is an award-winning animation studio, which has produced over 300 half hours of original children’s shows. We are also proud to employ a team of more than 200 of Canada’s top artists, writers and producers.
We are seeking a Production Manager to join our team our team ASAP for a Flash Animation series! The Production Manager assists the Producer in overseeing the production process, creating the show/departmental schedules, and directly managing members of the production crew to keep the project on track from a budgeting and scheduling standpoint.

Responsibilities:

Managing and organizing all production departments for the series (including design, boards, animation and post) and ensuring work is completed on schedule;
Overseeing the production’s progress, reviewing production reports and flagging any issues to Producer;
Supervising all Production Coordinators for the series;
Maintaining the directors’ schedules;
Having your “finger on the pulse” of the production floor;
Liaising with clients and partners;
Liaising with HR on staffing needs and specifics (start/end/salary/terms) and assisting with execution of deal memos;
Coordinating with IT and the Studio Manager regarding the crew’s required work stations and software;
Other projects and tasks as required.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

3+ years of experience coordinating production for an animation series with a strong knowledge of the 2D animation pipeline;
Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in related field (e.g. Entertainment/Media);
Demonstrated experience in assembling and motivating a talented and diverse crew;
Drive, determination and creative problem-solving skills;

Key Animation Supervisor (Harmony)

Employing a team of more than 200 of Canada’s top artists, our studio is full of talented and inspired professionals who are passionate about creating quality animation! We have great events like our annual Art Show and Summer BBQ, extended health benefits, and an in-house gym. Did we mention our studio is also dog-friendly?
We’re searching for a Key Animation Supervisor to work with our team on a new animated series! You’ll need to be able to spot and create strong, expressive storytelling poses and have a solid understanding of character design, staging, perspective and model. You’ll also require the ability to clearly and concisely communicate with and mentor artists on your team, so previous leadership experience is desired. An in-depth knowledge of Harmony is required. Above all, you must be passionate about the projects you work on, love to draw, and have a desire to make this show amazing! The start date for this position is flexible for the right candidate (between May to July 2015).

Responsibilities Include:

Reviewing animatics with Directors and breaking down the board to distribute to crew;
Working with crew to ensure that all elements of scenes (e.g. BG, Posing, FX etc.) are present and maintaining show continuity before the show moves on to animation;
Communicating revisions required to key animators/posing artists;
Meeting set production milestones and deadlines and motivating your team to do so as well;
Other tasks as required (which may include producing walk/run or other cycles, mouthloops/expressions, and creating/maintaining pose libraries).

Qualifications Include:

3+ years of experience as a 2D Animator or Posing Artist;

An in-depth working knowledge of Harmony;
Experience as an animation supervisor/lead preferred;
Degree/Diploma from a recognized animation school preferred;
Basic working knowledge of Flash preferred;
Ability to motivate and coach a talented and diverse crew;
Drive, determination and creative problem-solving skills;
Effective and professional communication skills;
Ability to organize, multi-task and prioritize.

Feature Character and Prop Designer

We’re hiring Feature Character & Prop Designers with previous production experience for a 2D animated feature to start in May 2015! We’re looking for portfolios that show a strong understanding of human/creature form; a variety of styles; mouthcharts, handcharts and turnarounds.

Responsibilities:

Working with our Art Director and other Designers to create engaging, performable characters and props according to the style of the production;
Translating character description and attitude from script to visual design;
Submitting multiple design variations and revisions based on feedback from Directors;
Creating model sheets of character turnarounds and facial/anatomical expressions.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Experience designing characters and/or props on a series preferred;
Strong drawing ability and a solid sense of design for 2D animation;
Degree/Diploma from a recognized animation school desired;
Able to work digitally (Photoshop, Flash, Sketchbook, etc. – Flash is required for some shows);
Experience in 3D Design is an asset;
A strong understanding of proportion, balance, perspective, dimension and dynamism;
Able to take direction and work collaboratively within a team;
Able to communicate professionally and positively;
Well organized with good time management skills.
