Pipeline Technical Director (Harmony)

DHX Media (Vancouver) Ltd. is an award-winning animation studio, which has produced over 300 half hours of original children’s shows. We’re looking for a Pipeline Technical Director to work closely with production, department leads and IT to develop and maintain a Toon Boom Harmony animation pipeline. You’ll be the point person for Harmony in our facility – establishing studio wide procedures for design, builds and rigging, troubleshooting scenes, creating processes for Maya and Harmony integration and anything else that we can think of that has the word Harmony in it! This is a pivotal role which requires expert knowledge of Harmony with serious experience in the production of animated television series.

Responsibilities Include:

Supporting the overall needs of production, pipeline and toolsets;
Overseeing the development, maintenance and optimization of tools used in production;
Acting as a primary support for technical problems in the production department;
Providing technical solutions to artists and supervisors, working closely with the animation crew;
Working with R&D engineering and programmers to resolve digital production asset management issues that may arise during production;
Managing the production pipeline integration with the production tracking and asset management system;
Maya asset integration into Harmony scenes;
Developing documentation and implementing training/mentoring to enhance skill-sets of current crew;
Collaborating with production supervisors to plan and establish methodologies that meet or exceed the requirements of each production.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Experience in a Toon Boom (Harmony, Storyboard Pro) network, client-server pipeline environment;
Sound technical knowledge of Toon Boom Harmony SDK and scripting capabilities;
2+ years of experience in Maya;
Knowledge of After Effects, Nuke, Flash, and Qube! is an asset;
Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Animation or a related field desired;
Able to take direction and work collaboratively with a positive attitude;
Able to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, to anticipate hurdles and problem-solve;
Well organized and efficient, able to juggle shifting priorities;
Strong work ethic with the ability to meet performance objectives within a fast-paced production environment.

Art Director – 2D Animated Feature

We’re looking for an Art Director with feature experience to lead design on an upcoming 2D project which will be animated in Toon Boom. This project is high-profile, and has a great track record! We’re seeking someone with a keen eye for the aesthetic needs of the project, who is a pro at juggling priorities and consistently meets design objectives, enjoys managing and mentoring a team, and can maintain excellent relationships with clients and colleagues!

Responsibilities Include:

Under the leadership of the Director, ensuring all designs (Character, Location, Prop) and the colour palette support the overall creative vision for the story and style of the project. Ensuring suitability in aesthetic, function and form;
Interpreting and incorporating feedback from the Director in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way;
Adhering to the production schedule, ensuring the design team meets key milestones and deadlines;
Sharing information, methodologies and ideas with others, providing guidance/mentorship to the design team;
Proactively communicating with the Director, Producer and/or other departments to anticipate and tackle potential problems as a team.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

3+ years of experience working as an Art Director/Lead, with prior experience on an animated feature;
Comprehension and knowledge of animation and its various platforms (Degree/Diploma in Animation desired but not a requirement);
Strong drawing, illustration and painting skills with working knowledge of anatomy, proportion, perspective and composition;
High degree of proficiency in Photoshop;
Experience on a Toon Boom production an asset;
Able to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, to anticipate hurdles and problem-solve;
Well organized and efficient, able to juggle shifting priorities and meet performance objectives within a fast-paced production environment;
Able to receive direction, and work collaboratively with a positive attitude;
An aspiration to keep on the cutting edge of art, animation and culture.

Character & Prop Designer

DHX Media (Vancouver) Ltd. is an award-winning animation studio, which has produced over 300 half hours of original children’s shows. Employing a team of more than 250 of Canada’s top artists, our studio is full of talented and inspired professionals who are passionate about creating quality animation!
We’re hiring Character & Prop Designers with previous production experience for several different shows starting between January and March 2015! We’re looking for portfolios that show a strong understanding of human/creature form; a variety of styles; mouthcharts, handcharts and turnarounds.

Responsibilities:

Working with our Art Director and other Designers to create engaging, performable characters and props according to the style of the production;
Translating character description and attitude from script to visual design;
Submitting multiple design variations and revisions based on feedback from Directors;
Creating model sheets of character turnarounds and facial/anatomical expressions.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Experience designing characters and/or props on a series preferred;
Strong drawing ability and a solid sense of design for 2D animation;
Degree/Diploma from a recognized animation school desired;
Able to work digitally (Photoshop, Flash, Sketchbook, etc. – Flash is required for some shows);
A strong understanding of proportion, balance, perspective, dimension and dynamism;
Able to take direction and work collaboratively within a team;
Able to communicate professionally and positively;
Well organized with good time management skills.

Storyboard Artists & Revisionists

DHX Media – Vancouver is an award-winning animation studio, which has produced over 300 half hours of original children’s shows such as Kid vs. Kat and Martha Speaks. We are also proud to employ a team of more than 200 of Canada’s top artists, writers and producers.
We are currently crewing up for two new series and are looking for extremely talented, fun, inspired Storyboard Artists and Storyboard Revisionists to join the team on My Little Pony, Transformers Rescue Bots, and Littlest Pet Shop! These positions start in January, February and April.
As a Storyboard Artist, you’ll be working collaboratively with the Director, Storyboard Supervisor, and other board artists on the team to conceptualize the story and create the blueprint for all artistic departments to follow. Previous experience in boards or revisions is required.
As a Storyboard Revisionist, you’ll work from Directors’ notes to enhance storytelling and fix problematic sequences in a board. Aside from first-rate drawing skills, you’ll need speed, the ability to take and interpret direction, and a knack for adding great poses and expressions to punch up specific scenes. You’ll be improving your craft through hands-on experience with our accomplished team of Board Artists and Directors, learning their tricks of the trade.

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

Previous experience as a Storyboard Artist or Revisionist in television animation;
Ability to work digitally (Cintiq with Sketchbook, Photoshop or Flash, etc.);
Strong drawing skills and sense of design, character and composition;
Strong sense of acting and timing;
Ability to organize and manage time effectively to meet deadlines;
Ability to communication in a professional and positive manner;
Creative problem solving skills;
Degree/Diploma from a recognized animation school preferred;
