Compositing Lead Job Description

Location: Vancouver, BC

Summary:

The Lead compositor assists the CG Sup and/or Comp Sup and Producer to bid, schedule and execute the
compositing production schedule. Day-to-day, they assign and delegate work to the team and monitor
shot progress to meet aesthetic and deadline expectations set by the creative supervisors.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists Comp Sup, CG Sup, and Producer with bidding and scheduling
Staffing recommendations in collaboration with supervisors and managers
Interviews and reviews potential candidates with manager when requested
Is involved in look development or delegates to senior compositor
Attends dailies and follows up with team regarding notes, fixes, etc.
Monitors shot and sequence progress and informs Comp/CG/VFX sup
Color grading and management of sequence continuity
Identifies problems and effectively implements solutions
Responsible for quality control on the team’s composites
Composites complex shots if needed
Mentors less experienced artists
Upon completion of project if requested:
o Documentation and element archiving
o Provides in-depth feedback of compositing crew to Managers

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

Minimum 5 years experience
Understanding of photography, composition, lighting, color and motion
Aesthetically and creatively capable of producing high-quality images
Demonstrated leadership experience and qualities
Strong communication skills
Time management and organizational skills
Professional in all dealings with Production, Sup and crew
Team player who takes and provides direction well
Dependable under pressure with attention to detail

Location: Vancouver, BC

Summary:
The Layout Artist works under the Layout Lead as part of a team to pre-determine scene and shot set-up
including camera, environment and character composition for use by the Animation Department.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Under minimal supervision, use and occasionally create, digital assets including character and
backgrounds to interpret scenes and shots as visualized by the Director.
Provide other creative departments within the show environment with layout source art created
in 3D.
Collaborate with Supervisors and Leads to determine technical and creative approach to scene
layouts.
Tracks shot progress through entire layout process. Archives all project files, renders, and source
images.
Take direction from Supervisors and Leads as well as provide guidance and mentorship to other
Layout Artists.

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience.
2+ years experience in feature film or television production
Extensive training in and/or strong understanding of the principles of story-telling, art and film.
Demonstrated proficiency in scene, shot, camera, and character composition is required.
Modeling, lighting, texturing and animation experience strongly desired.
Knowledge of terminology and techniques used in film, animation and visual effects including
basic knowledge of photography and camera lenses necessary.
Demonstrated proficiency using Maya, or 3Ds max required. Proficiency in other applications
such as Photoshop and After Effects is desired.
Ability to work under pressure as well as implement changes based on input from multiple
sources.
Ability to multi-task and work efficiently in a multi-user environment.
Excellent organizational and communication skills a must.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Lead Texture Artist
Department: 3D Dept.
Reports to: 3D Manager
Status: Non-Exempt

Classification: Full Time, Project
Date: 7/31/12

Purpose of the job:

The Lead Texture Artist oversees a team of texture artists for the project as well as creates complex, realistic
texture maps. The Lead Texture Artist participates in determining the method and procedures for the project
while working closely with other department Lead Artists and Supervisors to ensure all textures meet the look
and aesthetic of the project as well the technical requirements of the pipeline.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

 Oversee the development of the project’s texture pipeline.
 Assign tasks to the textures team and ensure production deadlines are met.
 Completes or oversees the most difficult work and complex sequences.
 Complete tasks within production deadlines and is self-directed.
 Work closely with Production to determine staffing and scheduling needs for the texture team.
 Work closely with other department leads and supervisors to help set and meet aesthetic and technical
standards for textures.

Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience Required:

 A broad expertise or unique knowledge of texturing, and the skills to contribute to the development
of techniques or procedures to achieve goals in creative and effective ways
 4+ years work experience required in creating realistic textures for feature films.
 2+ years of experience with Digital Domain’s pipeline preferred

Skills, Abilities, Special Licenses or Certificate:
 Leading or mentoring experience
 Excellent communication and organizational skills
 Extensive experience working with photographic elements to create textures
 Extensive experience editing and creating UVs
 Mudbox, ZBrush and/or BodyPaint experience a plus
 Mari and Maya experience highly preferred

Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands:

 Office working environment.
 Hours for this position are based on normal working hours but will require extra hours pending
production needs.
 Walking/bending/sitting.
