Senior Rigging Developer/TD

Description

Purpose of the job:

We are currently looking for a Senior Sr. Rigging Developer/TD with strong programming skills to work alongside our talented crew of riggers at Digital Domain. Assignments will include designing and maintaining our character rigging pipeline technology. This includes procedural rigging workflows, facial rigging pipeline as well creature deformations. The role requires strong technical and communication skills, as well as a firm understanding of character design, animation, rigging, tool development, and production workflow. This position requires 5-10 continuous years of production rigging/development experience and reports to the facility’s Rigging Supervisor.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Utilize and extend DD’s existing Python-based rigging tools. Develop utilities to optimize department workflows
Develop and maintain facial rigs using a combination of proprietary and 3rd party toolsets
Assist in the design and maintenance of the studio’s rigging pipeline.

Education and/or Experience Required:

Degree in computer science, art, animation, engineering, or equivalent experience that would equal that level of professionalism, problem solving and analytical skills
5-10 years experience with production-level character rigging, scripting and tool development
Strong knowledge of Maya’s rigging toolset, Python, QT, Maya API, C/C++
Strong comprehension of anatomy and articulation (human and creature mechanics)
Keen artistic eye to drive the look of realistic and appealing surface deformations
Passion for creating convincing digital characters a must!

Pipeline Supervisor – Lighting

Description

Purpose of the job:

The Lighting Pipeline Supervisor leads the development of the core set Lighting and Shading tools, working with Technology and Production Leadership to ensure that they meet the needs of current and future shows.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Lead the design, development, and evolution of texturing, shading, and lighting workflows and pipeline, working with relevant Leads and Supervisors, the Global head of Pipeline and the Global Production Technology Supervisor to ensure that the work is consistent with the rest of the pipeline while addressing current and future show needs
Work with Leadership to establish best practices for common shading and lighting techniques for Digital Domain’s chosen renderers (currently Vray and Mantra)
Lead the effort to maintain and extend the facility’s library of shaders and tools addressing lighting and look development needs
Lead efforts to troubleshoot rendering and lighting technical issues, including ray tracing render optimization, and mentor others in doing the same
Develop best practices and approaches for shading specific problems (i.e. AOVs, Projection, SSS, etc)
Attend, report on, and present to relevant Pipeline Councils
Keep up-to-date on current industry technologies and techniques
Participate in discussions with 3rd party vendors as these discussions relate to department initiatives
Craft and update documentation for the tools, techniques and workflows

Education and/or Experience Required:

3+ years experience as a Senior Lighting Technical Director or Supervising Lighting Technical Director
Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent work experience
Extensive experience in a wide range of CG Look Development, Shader and Lighting techniques
Ability to troubleshoot and debug rendering issues
Strong working knowledge of large-scale, production-level pipelines a necessity

Animation Developer/TD

Description

Purpose of the job:

The Animation Technical Directors are responsible for improving the overall efficiency of the facility-wide Animation pipeline. They design, implement, and manage tools that assist the Animators with their daily use of both third party and in-house software and systems. These tools are intended to make Animation/Character production as efficient and productive as possible. Animation TDs work with peers and supervisors to craft novel tools, techniques, and procedures to aid the execution of current projects and advance the capabilities of the facility. They also support Animators in tracking down technical problems with rigs, models, tools or data flow. The role requires strong technical and excellent communication/”customer service” skills, as well as a firm understanding of software design, graphics, and production work flow.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

High emphasis on translation of Animator feature requests and workflow discussions into practical designs and tool implementation that integrate with the production pipeline
Continually looking for ways to optimize the efficiency/workflow for Animation
Work with department representatives to augment their work flows and tool sets to achieve specific goals of the project
Interface with departments both up and downstream, to facilitate the smooth flow of assets through the pipeline
Work with artists to troubleshoot and fix problems ? Ensure animation tools and workflows follows studio policies and guidelines
Work closely with other Technical Directors to maintain and further the entire production pipeline
Craft and update documentation for tools, techniques and work flows generated by the Technical Director

Qualifications:

3+ years experience as a Technical Director with a focus on Animation or Rigging pipelines
Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics a plus ? Expert knowledge of Maya required
Proficiency in Python APIs and Mel scripting language
Must have written and supported animation and/or rigging tools used significantly in production
Experience with tool integration into existing or new pipelines
Working experience with one or more additional professional graphics packages, including Houdini, and Nuke
Ability to establish priorities, work independently or within a group, and work with minimal supervision
Excellent communication skills in dealing with both technical and artistic groups

The Compositing Developer/Technical Director works with peers and supervisors to craft novel compositing tools, techniques, and procedures to aid the execution of the current project and advance the capabilities of the facility. Work with artists to troubleshoot and fix problems arising in the Technical Director’s area(s) of expertise
Craft and update documentation for tools, techniques and work flows generated by the Technical Director
Remain informed of current technologies in the Technical Director’s field(s) of expertise

Qualifications:

3+ years experience as a Technical Director for Feature Films

Lighting Developer/TD

Description

Purpose of the job:

In addition to creating photorealistic CG Look Development and Lighting, Lighting TDs write and/or support tools to facilitate different lighting and rendering techniques such as HDRI, SSS, and Global Illumination. Their focus is ensuring shots can be delivered efficiently, at the very highest standard. TDs must have a strong knowledge of look development, shaders, lighting, and layer management as well as a thorough understanding of the AOVs/frame buffers that the Compositing Department may need.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Be able to troubleshoot common rendering and lighting technical issues, including ray tracing render optimization
Develops tools to optimize texturing, shading, and lighting workflow and pipeline
Craft and update documentation for the tools, techniques and workflows
Create photorealistic CG lighting that meets all technical and aesthetic standards for the project
Guide development of facility shaders by actual implementation, or where appropriate, delegating implementation to dedicated facility shader TD
Establish best practices for the most common shader techniques for Prmn, VRay and Arnold
Guide development of a default shader library
Create a default material library that texture painters can use as a basis for their work
Work with Shader TDs and Look Dev artists to establish a facility procedure for evaluation and accountability of shaders to ensure uniformity across shows whenever possible
Develop and maintain a proper repository for coding shaders in SVN
Develop best practices of for shading specific problems (i.e. AOVs, Projection, SSS, etc)
Manage Shadeops
Act as single point of contact on implementation of shader tools from the facility level
Aid show shader leads in communication and problem solving with texture and look dev teams
With the assistance of the Global Production Technology Producer set development priorities and ensure high quality shader solutions are available
Promote open dialogue on techniques to avoid people “reinventing the wheel”
Keep Pipeline Producer and Pipeline Supervisor aware of any nonstandard shader techniques in use so Pipeline Producer and Pipeline Supervisor can investigate and enforce established techniques or approve the requested innovation
Solicit feedback from shader teams on all shows to determine shader features that need to be supported at the facility level
Attend, report on, and present to relevant Pipeline Councils
Keep up to date on current industry technologies and techniques

Review shader training curriculum to ensure best practices are presented

Work with Environment Lead to augment the team’s work flows and tool sets to achieve specific goals of the project
Work directly with artists to troubleshoot and fix problems
Craft and update documentation for tools, techniques and work flows generated

Education and/or Experience Required:

3+ years experience as a Technical Director
Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent work experience ideal
Thorough understanding of a 3D and 2.5D (projection) pipeline
Preferably technical knowledge of lenses and camera bodies (filmback, distortion etc)
Working experience with Maya required
Working experience with one or more professional graphics packages, including V-ray, Houdini, and/or Nuke a plus

Pipeline Supervisor

Description

Purpose of the job:

The Pipeline Supervisor is responsible for leading a team charged with the development, deployment, and support of the Facility Pipeline on a Production. The Pipeline Supervisor does this in conjunction with the Technology Department leadership, as well as senior Supervisors and other Pipeline Supervisors across the company, in order to maximize the return on investment in any Pipeline enhancements, while minimizing show risk and waste.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Helps drive the design, implementation, and evolution of a standardized Pipeline for Productions and Departments, utilizing Show and Facility resources
Leads a team of Show and Facility TDs responsible for deploying, configuring, and supporting the existing Pipeline
Works with the other Pipeline Supervisors, senior Supervisors, and Technology Staff to ensure that the Pipeline meets the needs of the company at large and diverges as little as possible between Shows, while still meeting the needs of the individual Productions
Works with Production and Technology Management to ensure adequate resource coverage to meet the demands of the current show Acts as an escalation point for Supervisors, Production Management, and Artist Management to resolve conflicts; ensures limited resources are effectively utilized, and artists efficiently tasked by matching artist skill-set to assignments, identifying cross-utilization opportunities whenever possible
Promotes a positive and productive work environment and leads collaborative efforts across the facility

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience Required:

BS in Computer Science or Computer Graphics or equivalent Industry experience required
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in feature film on the post-production side desired
Experience managing software, pipeline, and/or technology teams desired
Production experience with Maya, Houdini and/or Nuke, including familiarity with APIs desired
General experience with Python in a production environment
Must be able to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
Good communication skills, both written and verbal

The Look Development Artist works as part of the Look Development team that defines all the technical and aesthetic aspects needed to create the appearance of a 3-D element.

The FX Artist works closely with the FX lead and FX TDs to create high quality effects including rigid body and particle dynamics, volume modeling and rendering, procedural geometry generation and fluid dynamics.

Design and animate high quality, photo-real effects (fire, smoke, explosions, debris, clouds, etc) that meet all technical and aesthetic standards for the project
Work within the show structure and production deadlines to complete all tasks

Produce look tests based on provided reference materials
Take direction from FX Leads and FX TDs as well as provide guidance and mentorship to other FX Artists

Qualifications:

3+ years experience as an FX Artist creating photo-real effects elements for feature films and commercials
Degree in Animation, Arts, Fine Arts or equivalent production experience
Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematics a plus
Expert knowledge of any/all of the following: rigid body and particle dynamics, volume modeling and rendering, procedural geometry generation and fluid dynamics
Strong understanding of physical dynamics and natural phenomena
Production experience working in Houdini and/or Maya is required
Experience with one or more other professional software packages such as 3D Studio Max or Real Flow is a plus
