Virtual Production Developer

Description

Purpose of the job:

Digital Domain is one of the largest and most influential visual effects studios in the world. We produce top tier visual effects for movies, television, commercials, along with virtual production, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) development services for clients and internally created content. The virtual production team is leading the industry with an advanced real-time visualization pipeline tightly integrated with motion capture, game engine, and interactive VR/AR technologies. We are looking to expand this team for work on key feature film and immersive storytelling experiences. We are seeking an experienced real time plugin developer for Motion Builder and Maya. This role will be helping develop and maintain core realtime plugin’s to handle motion capture and animation data along with hardware device input for virtual production and virtual reality projects.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

To work closely within the virtual production team to develop and maintain heavily optimized realtime server/client data streaming plugin’s in Motion Builder and Maya.
To develop and maintain plugins within Motion Builder and Maya to deal with real time motion capture, meta data and animation data.
To develop and maintain plugins within Motion Builder to interface directly with custom hardware, input devices and network interfaces to Unity.
Work with the lead virtual production TD to understand technical requirements, identify and prioritize development tasks.
Develop and maintain documentation for tools, techniques and workflows.
Collaborate closely with Unity developers, Unity TD’s and other pipeline TD’s to create new and exciting workflows, tools and techniques to support virtual production techniques in real time.
Active participation in technical and artistic discussions and problem solving.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience Required:

3+ years experience authoring and developing tools and plugins in C++.
2+ years development experience within games and/or motion capture industries.

Skills, Abilities, Special Licenses or Certificate:

Good knowledge of plugin development for Motion Builder, Maya and/or Unity.
Strong knowledge of object oriented design, 3D Math, and data structures optimized for realtime processing.
Strong working knowledge of server/client networking architecture and protocols.
Strong knowledge of matrix algebra, trigonometry and computational geometry essential.
Working knowledge of Python advantageous.
Knowledge of C# advantageous.
Experience with interfacing directly with IMU’s gyro’s and other sensing hardware advantageous.
Comfortable with tool and plugin development within Windows OS.
Knowledge and/or ability to understand the concepts of timecode, motion capture data, rigging and editorial workflows advantageous.

Game Engine Environment Artist

To work closely with the virtual art department supervisor and Virtual Art Department (VAD) team to develop and build environments, game spaces and help develop visual ideas, and create final environment assets as directed by feature film makers and internally driven virtual reality projects
Environmental, prop and vehicle assets will need to be created from scratch and based upon reference artwork and photography.
Asset creation will include models, UV maps, textures and materials.
Integration of art assets into the game engine with initial lighting both exterior and interior.
Active participation in technical and artistic discussions and problem solving.
Maintains a consistent style under director of production designers, art directors and creative directors.
Work closely with TD’s to ensure the pipeline is as efficient as possible.

Qualifications:

Unreal Engine Developer

We are seeking experienced game developers to help develop and maintain thin and lightweight clients using C++ / Blueprint within Unreal. Interfacing with hardware and streaming data servers directly into engine for virtual production along with custom game development for virtual reality should keep this role varied and busy.

To work closely within the virtual production and VR teams to develop and maintain lightweight clients and optimized modules covering AI, custom shader support, custom effects, hardware device input, network server/clients and game play mechanics to support Virtual Reality production pipelines (using game engine for visualization) and virtual reality experiences.

Texture Artist

The Senior Texture Artist will produce photorealistic textures from scratch textures from scratch and see them through the textures pipeline from start to finish.

Digital Producer

Description

Purpose of the job:

The Digital Producer is responsible for the planning, scheduling, management, and delivery of all aspects of digital production for feature film visual effects. Oversees all production workflow and partners with the VFX producer and show supervisors to deliver the contracted work on schedule.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

– Oversees the daily operations of the show Production team and Digital Artists to ensure efficient flow of work through the facility
– Works with show supervisors and VFX Producer to develop a breakdown of all digital effects work for the project
– Works with VFX Producer to revise bids and manage facility show costs
– With the support of the DPM to create a schedule for all phases of production
– Creates and maintains task assignments for the teams and works with team leads to create element and final delivery schedules
– Supervises a team of DPMs, Production Coordinators, and Production Assistants to schedule and update progress of tasks in the production tracking system and on the show board
– Partners with the show supervisors and leads to understand the development schedule, show pipeline, and its implication for production workflow
– Participates in show planning meetings with Supervisors and Technology teams through both development and shot production phases of the project
– Creates the call sheet and daily schedule, ensuring that dailies, client meetings, Supervisor walkthroughs, production meetings, and other priorities are effectively planned and managed
– Prioritizes daily output for CG elements and client deliveries
– Identifies potential issues in advance, facilitates problem solving and maintains the momentum required to keep the team delivering shots on schedule
– Acts as escalation point for conflict resolution and all show-related facility issues
– Trains and mentors Production staff and leads show performance appraisal process for Production team
– Plans and leads the execution of the show post-mortems

Rigger

Description

Purpose of the job:

We are seeking a Rigger to work alongside our talented crew at Digital Domain. Assignments will include creating efficient animation controls, setting up cloth and hair dynamics, implementing sophisticated mechanical rigging, applying realistic surface deformations, and development and automation tasks for the Rigging department. The role requires strong technical and communication skills, as well as a firm understanding of character design, animation, rigging, tool development, and production workflow. This position requires 2-3 continuous years of production rigging experience and reports to the show’s Rigging Lead.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

– Run transfers for actor facial performances from high resolution facial capture data on to creature faces
– Troubleshoot issues with Animation
– Work to improve the quality and help streamline the facial transfer process
– With the guidance of the Rigging Supervisor, work on the automatic model correction process
– Generate a variety of realistic creature, hero, digital double, vehicle and prop rigs
– Produce custom rigs, implementing a variety of modular components (biped/quadruped limbs, wings, mechanics, etc.)
– Develop and maintain realistic facial rigs using a combination of proprietary and 3rd party toolsets
– Utilize and extend DD’s existing Python-based rigging tools. Develop utilities to optimize department workflows
– Work with the Animation Department to ensure the successful handoff and execution of character rigs, including in-scene troubleshooting and rig optimization
– Assist in the design and maintenance of the studio’s rigging pipeline

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience Required:

· Degree in computer science, art, animation, engineering, or equivalent experience that would equal that level of professionalism, problem solving and analytical skills.
· 2-3 years experience with production-level character rigging, scripting and tool development.
· Capable of developing the process for merging takes is strongly preferred
· Able to ensuring all the multilayer of the facial rigs are set up and functioning correctly for animation within each shot is a plus
· Ability to automate retargeting is a plus
· Strong knowledge of Maya’s rigging toolset, including: skeleton placement, skinning techniques, IK/FK setup, corrective blendShape workflow, expressions, utility nodes, and Maya deformers.
· Experience with nucleus and mayaMuscle dynamics.
· Familiarity with mocap ingestion & retargeting (motionBuilder, humanIK)
· Strong comprehension of anatomy and articulation (human and creature mechanics).
· Keen artistic eye to drive the look of realistic and appealing surface deformations.
