Lighting Artist

Location: Vancouver, BC

Summary:

The Lighting Artist will light shots and sequences and may participate in some Look Development. The Lighting Artist will work within the lighting and rendering pipeline to see shots through from start to finish.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Create photorealistic CG lighting that meets all technical and aesthetic standards for the project
• Complete tasks within production deadlines while being largely self-directed
• Be able to troubleshoot common rendering and lighting technical issues, including ray tracing render optimization

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

• A wide range of experience and skills that can be used to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways
• 3+ years experience creating photorealistic lighting for live-action feature films in Maya and
• Renderman, Mental Ray or Vray
• Experience with Katana and/or Arnold a plus
• Extensive experience in a wide range of CG Lighting techniques and technical methods
• Experience with HDRs and image based lighting
• Ability to troubleshoot and debug common rendering issues
• Python or C++ experience in production is ideal
• Must have excellent communication and organizational skills

Pipeline Technical Director

Location: Vancouver, BC

Summary:

Pipeline Technical Directors are responsible for improving the overall efficiency of the facility-wide production pipeline. They design, implement, and manage tools that assist the digital artists with their daily use of both third party and in-house software and systems. These tools are intended to make the computer graphics production as efficient and productive as possible.
Pipeline TDs work with peers and supervisors to craft novel tools, techniques, and procedures to aid the execution of the current project and advance the capabilities of the facility. The role requires strong technical and communication skills, as well as a firm understanding of software design, graphics, and production work flow.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work with other TDs and artists to help design and create tools to be integrated into Digital Domain’s existing pipeline. These tools will be created using a combination of custom and commercial Python and C++ APIs- including those applicable to Nuke, Maya, and Houdini dependent upon the emphasis of the specific role.
• Work with department representatives to augment their work flows and tool sets to achieve specific goals of the project
• Work with artists to troubleshoot and fix problems
• Craft and update documentation for tools, techniques and work flows generated by the Technical Director

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

• 3+ years experience as a Technical Director
• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent work experience
• Practical knowledge of Python strongly desired, knowledge of PyQt a plus
• Working experience with one or more professional graphics packages, including Maya, Houdini
and Nuke
• Proficiency in one or more professional graphics package C++/ Python APIs, including the Maya SDK, HDK, Nuke SDK, Mental Ray SDK, and Prman SDK preferred
• Proficiency in applicable domain specific programming language(s) including Mel, HScript, RSL, MetaSL

Visual Effects Production Coordinator

Location: Vancouver, BC

Summary:

The Production Coordinator is responsible for the assignment and tracking of tasks for assigned area of responsibility. Facilitates the movement of shots between teams, coordinates daily reviews, and communicates status updates to ensure the delivery of shots on schedule. Provides administrative support to the production management team and show supervisors.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Under the guidance of the DP or DPM, schedules and tracks progress of tasks for
assigned artists or sequences in the production tracking system
• Maintains production tracking system and show board with revisions, omits, and shot
length changes; notifies the affected crew as needed
• Partners with other Production personnel to ensure shots are scheduled and delivered in
a timely manner
• Follows up with artists on a daily basis to ensure task deliveries remain on schedule;
communicates any schedule changes to appropriate artists, Supervisors and Production
team as needed
• Coordinates all client deliveries, both physical deliveries and digital deliveries via FTP,
with Production Services department; maintains log of all deliveries
• Manages meeting schedule and walkthroughs for Supervisors; publishes notes as needed
• Responsible for setup of dailies, nightlies, and all client reviews in the Screening Room
and view stations; publishes notes for all review sessions
• Leads nightly production update for assigned area of responsibility
• Acts as primary point of contact for internal Editorial
• Completes reference research for elements for Supervisors and area leads
• Oversees run requests and petty cash
• This is a cross departmental position that will require management of pipeline issues
• Liaison with Production Coordinator in Venice Studio to coordinate cross discipline tasks,
deliveries, questions, statuses and approvals

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in film, art, communications or related field
• 3+ years production experience in visual effects or feature animation
• Demonstrable experience in highly technical, dynamic departments is a must
• Experience with heavy schedule management in a very time sensitive atmosphere
• Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required; experience with
production tracking software and asset management software a plus
• Highly developed communication skills to facilitate interdepartmental needs and schedules required
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks in a high pressure environment

Rigger

Department: Animation
Reports to: Status: Non-Exempt
Classification: Full Time, Project

Purpose of the job:

We are currently seeking a Rigger/Character TD to work alongside our talented crew of riggers at Digital Domain. Assignments will include creating efficient animation controls, setting up cloth and hair dynamics, implementing sophisticated mechanical rigging and applying realistic surface deformations.
The role requires strong technical and communication skills, as well as a firm understanding of character design, animation, rigging, tool development, and production workflow. This position requires 2-3 continuous years of production rigging experience and reports to the show’s Rigging Lead.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

• Generate a variety of realistic creature, hero, digital double, vehicle and prop rigs
• Produce custom rigs, implementing a variety of modular components (biped/quadruped limbs, wings, mechanics, etc.)
• Develop and maintain realistic facial rigs using a combination of proprietary and 3rd party toolsets
• Utilize and extend DD’s existing Python-based rigging tools
• Develop utilities to optimize department workflows
• Work with the Animation Department to ensure the successful handoff and execution of character rigs, including in-scene troubleshooting and rig optimization
• Assist in the design and maintenance of the studio’s rigging pipeline

Qualifications- Education and/or Experience Required:

• Degree in computer science, art, animation, engineering, or equivalent experience that would equal that level of professionalism, problem solving and analytical skills
• 2-3 years experience with production-level character rigging, scripting and tool development
• Strong knowledge of Maya’s rigging toolset, including: skeleton placement, skinning techniques, IK/FK setup, corrective blendShape workflow, expressions, utility nodes, and Maya deformers
• Experience with nucleus and Maya Muscle dynamics
• Familiarity with mocap ingestion & retargeting (motionBuilder, humanIK)
• Strong comprehension of anatomy and articulation (human and creature mechanics)
• Keen artistic eye to drive the look of realistic and appealing surface deformations
• Production experience with Python scripting
• Good modeling and animation skills
• Working knowledge of linux, linear algebra, texture/UV layout & compositing
• Passion for creating convincing digital characters a must!

• Office working environment
• Hours for this position are based on normal working hours but will require extra hours pending production needs
• Walking/bending/sitting
