CHARACTER TD

We are hiring Character TDs with a strong desire to partner with some of the best animators and modelers in the industry. Our team is creating the most flexible and expressive character rigs on the planet in pursuit of the ultimate in animation performance and acting.
Our ideal candidate has strong technical skills in rigging, astute artistic sense, and a pinch of mad scientist. Our Character TDs are challenged to not only create incredible rigs as part of our Character Asset Teams, but also plus every shot in the film with breathtaking character effects work.
Do you speak Animator? Conversational Modeler? Do you know how to make a rig that preserves volume but has still impressive squash and stretch? Does the way clothing moves or hair cascades fascinate you?

Responsibilities:

Work directly with Character Asset Team members: Directors, Character Designers, Animators, Modelers, and Look Development Artists to define and create the best animation rigs for a wide range of character styles and art directions
Responsible for the creation and downstream success of each character
Character effects for shot production, including cloth and hair simulation, and final character polishing

Requirements:

Exceptional artistic and technical skills
Experience on 3-5 CG feature film productions
Experience working in collaborative environments and taking direction
Solid understanding of the principles of animation
Extensive knowledge of anatomy, kinematics, and physical behaviors
Strong problem-solving ability
Solid understanding of Python and MEL scripting and comfort with Linux environments
Experience in Modeling a plus
Experience in Hair/Cloth simulation a plus
Bachelors degree in Art, Illustration, Computer Graphics, Engineering, related field or equivalent experience desired

Examples of broad motion in rigs and inclusion of active, dynamic simulations are a plus

CROWDS ARTIST

We are seeking Crowd FX Artists to join our Burbank, CA studio. Our Crowd FX Artists apply their creative and technical skills to populate Walt Disney Animation Studio projects with world-class crowds. They will be part of the filmmaking process from asset creation through early shot layout to final rendering.

Responsibilities

Apply creative and technical skills to create great-looking crowds
Design crowd character behavior from scratch within Houdini and Massive
Create crowd versions of character geometry, materials, and rigs with an eye toward variation and efficiency
Identify and breakdown behaviors into cycles for artists to animate
Work with the larger production to populate shots with crowds from early layout to final rendering
Be a strong collaborator during brainstorming and problem-solving sessions
Identify opportunities to share knowledge and educate others on production process

Requirements

Strong understanding of the filmmaking process in a large-scale VFX or CG animation production
Strong understanding of crowd agent design, simulation, and behavior
Strong understanding of the principles of effects particle systems, animation, and simulation
Strong technical understanding of digital pipeline issues and optimization
Good understanding of modeling, texturing, and rigging techniques
Excellent problem solving skills
Ability to present ideas and to communicate clearly with artistic and studio leadership
Ability to work in a collaborative environment, taking as well as giving direction with tact
Bachelors degree or higher in Art, Cinema Studies, Computer Graphics, Computer Science, Engineering, related field, or equivalent experience
Strong knowledge of each of the following technical areas:
Houdini®, Massive®, Maya®, Renderman® or other render engines
Crowd simulation tools/techniques
Particle system tools/techniques
3D sculpting, texturing, and rigging tools/techniques
The Unix/Linux environment
Python and Mel scripting
