Key Purpose of the Job:

Senior and Lead Pipeline Technical Directors guide the work of ATDs and more junior Pipeline TDs, as well as designing and developing essential tools for the show.

Needs To Do:

Vet artist requests for new tools.
Technical problem solving.
Support tickets for issues related to main pipe (db), 3D and 2D.
Tool development for 3d/2d dept normally in python.
Facilitate the hand-off of new tools and pipeline improvements at the end of production.
Work with CG Supervisor and R&D/Pipe to address show-specific pipeline needs.
Create documentation and tutorials for tools and procedures.
Develop test plans to ensure quality of both show-based and studio-based software.
Work with artists to improve tool usability.
Monitor and maintain show’s pipeline.
Serve as the conduit to Pipe and R&D for reporting and managing tool and pipeline fixes and new releases.
Work with London Pipe/RnD with easing site to site data and workflow issues.
Makes recommendations and provides solutions to improve quality, efficiency, and workflow.
Develop new tools and scripts as required by the show.
Write tool specs to be developed by London pipe team.
Work with Pipe to maintain, extend, and update pipeline software.

Needs To Know:

Extensive experience as a Pipeline TD.
Demonstrated ability of analysing production procedures and solving problems.
Expert level understanding of the Visual Effects pipeline.
Expert knowledge and experience with Python and PyQt.
Intermediate level or better experience with the APIs and use of Maya, Nuke and/or Houdini.

We are looking for modellers to create highly detailed organic character models suitable for use in feature animation work. Anticipating and communicating any model performance issues and ensure adherence to the Double Negative Feature Animation production pipeline protocols.

Needs to Do:

Build complex 3D character models for an array of visuals within features.
Take direction from the Production Designer and work along side development artists and character TD’s to interpret designs and translate into builds and models for the production.
Determine an appropriate level of detail for all models you are required to create.
Use reference material where possible to create suitable representations of the needed character or prop.

Needs to Know:

Must have keen knowledge and understanding of anatomy.
How to effectively translate your ideas to communicate with other artists.
Traditional sculpting techniques using digital tools such as Maya or Z-brush.

Have a clear understanding of animation principles such as posing, weight and timing.

Key Purpose of the Job:

To handle any general 3d tasks required. We would expect a broad knowledge that covers as many areas of 3d as possible, or at least the basics (modelling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering).

Needs to Do:

Cover the more general 3d tasks such as modelling, animation, texturing, lighting and rendering. At times, they may be asked to learn a proprietary system or a new piece of software, and we would expect them to be flexible enough to handle this.

Needs to Know:

Thorough knowledge of the principles of 3D (animation, FX, modelling, texturing, lighting, scripting, shading, rendering, rigging). We appreciate that the candidate may have varying levels of knowledge in these fields.
Full working knowledge of Maya and/or Houdini.
You would need to be comfortable with the more technical aspects of CG work, and have a good sense of the artistic side as well. Programming or scripting skills (e.g. mel, python) would be beneficial, but not essential.
Familiarity with pipeline issues and a typical post production environment.

Prep Artist

Key Purpose of the Job:

Prep Artists work closely with the Compositors using a variety of paint techniques to seamlessly prepare plates for Compositors to use for visual effects shots.

Needs to Do:

Depending on experience and Show requirements, Prep Artists are expected to:
Remove rigs and wires using Nuke and other frame by frame painting software.
De-graining and re-graining paint work before it leaves the department.
Having an understanding of Nukes 3D environment to project clean plates and understanding how to use UV projections.
Being able to dustbust plates and do scratch removal.
A willingness to learn new techniques.

Needs to Know:

A working knowledge of Nuke

FX TD

Key Purpose of Role:

FX Technical Directors gather a variety of 3D assets produced by our Build, Layout and Animation departments and use off the shelf software – primarily Houdini but also Maya – and custom pipeline tools to create particle, rigid body, fluid, cloth, fur and hair simulations.

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

Use an array of commercial and proprietary software tools to produce photorealistic simulations of real-world phenomena while developing innovative solutions to complex problems.
Create bespoke effects setups to fulfil client briefs.
Produce test and often final renders of FX elements for a shot.
Create working test composites for review by the supervision team.
Work in partnership with lighters & compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard.
Stay on schedule and meet deadlines whilst maintaining the highest quality of work.

Experience and Skills:

Proven experience in producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam and explosions, plus experience with particle and voxel based rendering.
An eye for details, good sense of timing, and thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to physical simulation in computer graphics.
Experience in live action FX work preferred.
Extensive knowledge of Houdini and Maya (Python, Hscript or Mel knowledge a plus).
Familiarity with pipeline issues and problem solving.
A good general TD background is desirable.
Familiarity with at least one node based compositing application (Nuke preferred), and a solid understanding of the compositing process.
Strong understanding of linux/ unix based operating systems.

To (re) create photo realistic matte paintings that are to be used as an element to either embellish or replace live action footage.

Needs to Do:

Work with live action footage, digital still photography, rendered cg elements and digital paint to create believable environments that are to be seamlessly integrated into the film.
This will require an artist who is comfortable in a variety of implementations, be it 2D backdrops, textured elements/fixes and complex 2.5D/3D projections.
At times, they may also be asked to learn new proprietary software.

Needs to Know:

Thorough knowledge of advanced matte painting techniques including colour space, digital paint techniques and Photoshop file management (be it file format, bit depth resolution or appropriate layering of elements).
A good understanding and application of basic perspective as a basis for a form building/correcting strategy in the creation of the digital environments.
Technical proficiency in photography with an emphasis on composition, depth, lighting and colour.
Working knowledge of the basic principles of 3D texture projections in Maya.

Modeller

Description

Key Purpose of the Job:

To create highly detailed models suitable for use in visual effects work for film, that cover a wide range of organic and non-organic objects.

Needs to Do:

The modeller will need to work very closely with the texture painters, shader writers, look development artists and the riggers to generate models that are suitable for feature film work.
The models may be organic in nature, such as various creatures or characters, or they may be models of rigid objects such as cars, buildings, props or sets.
They will need to make use of a wide range of reference materials.
Models may need to be created from scratch or from scans, reference photography, maquettes, miniatures or other set models.
They will also have to work closely with their leads to determine an appropriate level of detail for any given model.
It will also be important to work closely with the riggers to produce models that meet their work flow requirements, and with texture painters to determine the optimal UV layout for a model.

Needs to Know:

Strong spatial awareness and a good sense of form, scale and proportion.
A very keen eye for detail.
A full working knowledge of modelling in any one or more of these packages: Maya, XSI and Cyslice.
Ability to work with packages such as Mudbox or Z-brush are an advantage.
Polygon and sub-division surface modelling. Knowledge of NURBS modelling is not generally required, but a plus.
How to deliver a “clean” model with tidy polygon/sub-d placement and good basic UV layout for texturing
A good knowledge of Linux would be an advantage. Familiarity with Windows useful but not essential.
When to model detail or have the the detail added through the shading, by liasing with the shader writers and look development artists.
At least 1 years experience in feature films would be beneficial. Experience in other areas of visual effects (TV, Games) will also be taken into account.
