Key Purpose of the Job:

Needs to Do:

Ensure that artists understand their schedule of work and relay information back to production & supervision team.

Keep databases up to date with element and shot status.

Job Requirements:

Previous VFX production experience.

Modeller

Description

Department: 3D
Location: Vancouver
Reports To: Head of 3D

Key Purpose of the Job:

To create highly detailed models suitable for use in visual effects work for film, that cover a wide range of organic and non-organic objects.

Needs to Do:

The modeller will need to work very closely with the texture painters, shader writers, look development artists and the riggers to generate models that are suitable for feature film work.
The models may be organic in nature, such as various creatures or characters, or they may be models of rigid objects such as cars, buildings, props or sets.
They will need to make use of a wide range of reference materials.
Models may need to be created from scratch or from scans, reference photography, maquettes, miniatures or other set models.
They will also have to work closely with their leads to determine an appropriate level of detail for any given model.
It will also be important to work closely with the riggers to produce models that meet their work flow requirements, and with texture painters to determine the optimal UV layout for a model.

Needs to Know:

Strong spatial awareness and a good sense of form, scale and proportion.
A very keen eye for detail.
A full working knowledge of modelling in any one or more of these packages: Maya, XSI and Cyslice.
Ability to work with packages such as Mudbox or Z-brush are an advantage.
Polygon and sub-division surface modelling. Knowledge of NURBS modelling is not generally required, but a plus.
How to deliver a “clean” model with tidy polygon/sub-d placement and good basic UV layout for texturing
A good knowledge of Linux would be an advantage. Familiarity with Windows useful but not essential.
When to model detail or have the the detail added through the shading, by liasing with the shader writers and look development artists.
At least 1 years experience in feature films would be beneficial. Experience in other areas of visual effects (TV, Games) will also be taken into account.

2D Runner

Job Title: 2D Runner

Running is the best way to get your foot in the door at Double Negative. All our runners join us with the aim of moving on in the business as VFX artists or production. Our 2D runners are junior 2D artists; after running the usual career route is to start in roto, move into prep/paint where you learn the skills you need to move into compositing.

Key Purpose of the Job:

Assisting all employees with queries and helping to resolve any problems.
Dispatching and delivering documents both in house and out of house.
Managing stocks and supplies, arranging orders, dealing with reception.
Assisting the office manager with the smooth running of our offices.

Needs to Do:

Dispatching and collecting items on request both in house and out of house; delivering post, faxes and other items to staff.
Taking initiative to manage stocks and supplies, arranging orders where necessary; ensuring refreshments, stationary, general office equipment and loos are well stocked.
Keeping reception, rest areas and offices clean tidy and well presented.
Reception duties – including dealing with switch board calls, welcoming clients, providing refreshments for meetings and clients, booking meeting rooms, cars and couriers.
Providing support to producers and managers, assisting producers with documents’ presentation where necessary, including adding images to layout, laminating, binding, scanning, photocopying.

Compositor

Seamless integration of live action, miniature and CGI sources.

Follow production methodologies and develop creative approaches and problem-solving.

Matte Painter

Key Purpose of the Job:

To (re) create photo realistic matte paintings that are to be used as an element to either embellish or replace live action footage.

Needs to Do:

Work with live action footage, digital still photography, rendered cg elements and digital paint to create believable environments that are to be seamlessly integrated into the film.
This will require an artist who is comfortable in a variety of implementations, be it 2D backdrops, textured elements/fixes and complex 2.5D/3D projections.
At times, they may also be asked to learn new proprietary software.

Needs to Know:

Thorough knowledge of advanced matte painting techniques including colour space, digital paint techniques and Photoshop file management (be it file format, bit depth resolution or appropriate layering of elements).
A good understanding and application of basic perspective as a basis for a form building/correcting strategy in the creation of the digital environments.
Technical proficiency in photography with an emphasis on composition, depth, lighting and colour.
Working knowledge of the basic principles of 3D texture projections in Maya.
A minimum of 3 years experience on feature films. Experience in matte painting for television would also be taken into account.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Professional aptitude for time management in relation to bringing multiple priorities and tasks to completion within a set deadline.

FX TD

Key Purpose of Role:

FX Technical Directors gather a variety of 3D assets produced by our Build, Layout and Animation departments and use off the shelf software – primarily Houdini but also Maya – and custom pipeline tools to create particle, rigid body, fluid, cloth, fur and hair simulations.

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

Use an array of commercial and proprietary software tools to produce photorealistic simulations of real-world phenomena while developing innovative solutions to complex problems.
Create bespoke effects setups to fulfil client briefs.
Produce test and often final renders of FX elements for a shot.
Create working test composites for review by the supervision team.
Work in partnership with lighters & compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard.
Stay on schedule and meet deadlines whilst maintaining the highest quality of work.

Experience and Skills:

Proven experience in producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam and explosions, plus experience with particle and voxel based rendering.
An eye for details, good sense of timing, and thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to physical simulation in computer graphics.
Experience in live action FX work preferred.
Extensive knowledge of Houdini and/or Maya (Python, Hscript or Mel knowledge a plus).
Familiarity with pipeline issues and problem solving.
A good general TD background is desirable.
Familiarity with at least one node based compositing application (Nuke preferred), and a solid understanding of the compositing process.
Strong understanding of linux/ unix based operating systems.
At least 3 years experience in feature films. Experience in other areas of visual effects (TV, Games) will also be taken into account.

To handle any general 3d tasks required. We would expect a broad knowledge that covers as many areas of 3d as possible, or at least the basics (modelling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering).

Needs to Do:

Cover the more general 3d tasks such as modelling, animation, texturing, lighting and rendering. At times, they may be asked to learn a proprietary system or a new piece of software, and we would expect them to be flexible enough to handle this.

Needs to Know:

Thorough knowledge of the principles of 3D (animation, FX, modelling, texturing, lighting, scripting, shading, rendering, rigging). We appreciate that the candidate may have varying levels of knowledge in these fields.
Full working knowledge of Maya and/or Houdini.
You would need to be comfortable with the more technical aspects of CG work, and have a good sense of the artistic side as well. Programming or scripting skills (e.g. mel, python) would be beneficial, but not essential.
Familiarity with pipeline issues and a typical post production environment.

Matchmove (Body Tracking)

Key Purpose of the Job:

Matchmovers take the original background plate photography and recreate the set up for use with in-house software. Starting with tracking a camera and calculating lens distortion the scene could also require body tracking and object tracking which would hone animation skills.

Needs to Do:

To work with basic line up geometry and associated scene data in order to ensure a good match with the scene.

Needs to Know:

Must have experience in Body Tracking
A good basic knowledge of Maya is required, and knowledge of 3dEqualizer is desirable though familiarity with any tracking software would be useful.
A degree or equivalent in Computer Graphics, Animation or other related course.
Past industry experience and be equally proficient in camera, object and body tracking.

Needs to Be:

Pro-active and good at problem solving.
Very meticulous and accurate. A good eye for detail and ability to work under pressure on potentially short turn around times is essential.

The position of Lighting Technical Director requires someone with a thorough knowledge of 3D Computer Graphics, with several years of experience in a similar role working on broadcast or film projects. Successful applicants will have a well developed ‘eye’, a good working knowledge of art, design and film lighting as well as a solid technical grounding in renderers like Pixar’s Renderman or Mental Ray. Some experience in Look Development and shader setup would be an advantage.

CG Supervisor

Key Purpose of the Job:

The CG Supervisor is responsible for interpreting and implementing the creative aims of the Director/VFX Supervisor within the financial constraint of the project. Overseeing the production of CG assets, setting up a working shot pipeline and successfully delivering CG elements for the shots on their project. They will creatively and technically lead the artists throughout the show ensuring that good and clear communication occurs at all times between the artists, production team and show leads/supervisors. Will contribute to bidding and crewing for their project, and have further responsibilities to the facility in terms of managing their team, providing feedback on crew, and proactively improving the facility pipeline for the long term.

Needs to Do:

Create, approve, guide and verify the approach to the work taken by the 3D crew on a show will deliver the results required inside the budget and time available. Work closely with the VFX Supervisor to interpret the creative vision of the director and plan a pragmatic way to deliver on that brief. Mentor more junior staff technically and creatively. Constantly communicate with Production and other DNegTV departments to ensure both client and internal demands are being met. Explore, embrace and implement new technology and solutions where appropriate.

Needs to Know:

CG Supervisor or previous Sequence Supervisor experience required
Excellent creative eye and aesthetic judgement
