FX TD

Key Purpose of Role:

FX Technical Directors gather a variety of 3D assets produced by our Build, Layout and Animation departments and use off the shelf software – primarily Houdini but also Maya – and custom pipeline tools to create particle, rigid body, fluid, cloth, fur and hair simulations.

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

Use an array of commercial and proprietary software tools to produce photorealistic simulations of real-world phenomena while developing innovative solutions to complex problems.
Create bespoke effects setups to fulfil client briefs.
Produce test and often final renders of FX elements for a shot.
Create working test composites for review by the supervision team.
Work in partnership with lighters & compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard.
Stay on schedule and meet deadlines whilst maintaining the highest quality of work.

Experience and Skills:

Proven experience in producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam and explosions, plus experience with particle and voxel based rendering.
An eye for details, good sense of timing, and thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to physical simulation in computer graphics.
Experience in live action FX work preferred.
Extensive knowledge of Houdini and/or Maya (Python, Hscript or Mel knowledge a plus).
Familiarity with pipeline issues and problem solving.
A good general TD background is desirable.
Familiarity with at least one node based compositing application (Nuke preferred), and a solid understanding of the compositing process.
Strong understanding of linux/ unix based operating systems.
At least 3 years experience in feature films. Experience in other areas of visual effects (TV, Games) will also be taken into account.

Animator

Department: Feature Animation

Double Negative Feature Animation, a newly realised feature animation facility, is looking for animators to join our team. Together we will bring the vision of both major Hollywood studios and independent productions to life.

Key Purpose of the Job:

We are looking for animators to bring to life our next top feature animation project! Completing shots in accordance with the Show Director’s overall vision. Using storyboards, animatics and other visual reference to help achieve this.

Need to Do:

Bring characters to life.
Work with the Director, Animation Supervisor and other staff in order to understand and execute creative direction.
Have a clear understanding of animation principles such as posing, weight and timing.
A strong knowledge of anatomy and movement.
Ability to use acting skills to communicate ideas with which and audience can empathise.
Anticipate, communicate and troubleshoot technical issues.

Needs to Know:

Thorough knowledge of Maya.
3+ years of experience within an animation department (Feature Animation preferred).
Show understanding of anatomy, perspective and composition, strong drawing skills an asset.
Demonstrate knowledge of timing, posing, acting and storytelling techniques.
Ability to perform visual and analytical problem solving in 3-dimensional space, including the ability to accurately interpret 3D layouts and analyse 3D form.

Compositor

Department: DNegTV
Location: London
Reports To: DNeg TV VFX Supervisor

Key Purpose of the Job:

To seamlessly integrate all the layers or elements of a shot, including live-action and computer graphic elements. Compositors work closely with Visual Effects Supervisors and 2D Supervisors to composite the numerous elements that complete a visual effects shot.

Needs to Do:

Blue/green screen extractions.
Seamless integration of live action, miniature and CGI sources.
Take part in client reviews.
Follow production methodologies and develop creative approaches and problem-solving.
Performing all aspects of composite fx design.

Needs to Know:

You must have a minimum of 5-6 years VFX industry experience.
Experience in using Nuke.
A knowledge and interest in photography and practical lighting is helpful.
Critical eye for detail, and strong communication skills.

VFX Production Coordinator

Department: TV Department Production
Location: London
Reports To: VFX Line Producer

Key purpose of the job:

To assist the production and supervision team in the smooth running of VFX for TV projects by ensuring an accurate and efficient flow of information.

Needs to Do:

Ensure that VFX artists understand their schedule of work and relay information back to production & supervision team.
Coordinate the flow of information and elements between VFX artists and departments.
Keep VFX shot databases up to date with element and shot status.
Co-ordinate dailies and note take
Ensure the send and receipt of materials to and from the client.

Needs to Know:

Shotgun – or have used similar shot database
Office, particularly Excel. (Filemaker Pro is helpful) .
Experienced in database work.
FTP software.
HTML / Wiki skills are an advantage.
Aptitude for new software is a must.

Needs to Be:

Clear communicator of succinct and accurate information.
Extremely focussed and organised.
Adaptable to changing scenarios and showing initiative.
Calm and personable under pressure, whilst working to tight deadlines.

Generalist TD

Key Purpose of the Job:

To handle any general 3d tasks required. We would expect a broad knowledge that covers as many areas of 3d as possible, or at least the basics (modelling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering).

Needs to Do:

Cover the more general 3d tasks such as modelling, animation, texturing, lighting and rendering. At times, they may be asked to learn a proprietary system or a new piece of software, and we would expect them to be flexible enough to handle this.

Needs to Know:

Thorough knowledge of the principles of 3D (animation, FX, modelling, texturing, lighting, scripting, shading, rendering, rigging). We appreciate that the candidate may have varying levels of knowledge in these fields.
Full working knowledge of Maya and/or Houdini.
You would need to be comfortable with the more technical aspects of CG work, and have a good sense of the artistic side as well. Programming or scripting skills (e.g. mel, python) would be beneficial, but not essential.
Familiarity with pipeline issues and a typical post production environment.
Minimum of 1 years experience on feature films. Experience in other areas of visual effects (TV, games) would also be taken into account.

Character Modeller

Double Negative Feature Animation, a newly realized feature animation facility, is looking for character modelers to join our team. Together we will bring the vision of both major Hollywood studios and independent productions to life.

Key Purpose of the Job:

We are looking for modellers to create highly detailed organic character models suitable for use in feature animation work. Anticipating and communicating any model performance issues and ensure adherence to the Double Negative Feature Animation production pipeline protocols.

Needs to Do:

Build complex 3D character models for an array of visuals within features.
Take direction from the Production Designer and work along side development artists and character TD’s to interpret designs and translate into builds and models for the production.
Determine an appropriate level of detail for all models you are required to create.
Use reference material where possible to create suitable representations of the needed character or prop.

Needs to Know:

Must have keen knowledge and understanding of anatomy.
How to effectively translate your ideas to communicate with other artists.
Traditional sculpting techniques using digital tools such as Maya or Z-brush.
Strong sense of form, scale and proportion.

Needs to Be:

Meticulous.
Highly motivated.
Team oriented.
Able to learn in house work flows and methodologies.
Able to adapt to changing requirements or briefs.

Matte Painter

Job Title: Matte Painter

Key Purpose of the Job:

To create photorealistic matte paintings from photographic elements, CG and digital painting techniques.

Needs to Do:

Work with live action footage, digital still photography, rendered CG elements and digital paint to create photo-real
environments that are to be seamlessly integrated into the image.
This will require an artist who is proficient in a variety of implementations, including 2D backdrops, textured elements/fixes and complex 2.5D/3D projections.
At times, they may also be asked to learn new proprietary software.

Needs to Know:

A good understanding of advanced matte painting techniques including colour space, digital paint techniques and Photoshop file management (file format, bit depth resolution and appropriate layering of elements).
A thorough understanding of perspective.
Technical proficiency in photography with an emphasis on exposure, composition and depth.
Working knowledge of Maya.
A minimum of 3 years experience in Matte Painting for TV or film.
Excellent verbal and written communication.
Must be able to manage own time to bringing multiple priorities and tasks to completion within a set deadline.

Pipeline TD

Key Purpose of the Job:

Senior and Lead Pipeline Technical Directors guide the work of ATDs and more junior Pipeline TDs, as well as designing and developing essential tools for the show.

Needs To Do:

Vet artist requests for new tools.
Technical problem solving.
Support tickets for issues related to main pipe (db), 3D and 2D.
Tool development for 3d/2d dept normally in python.
Facilitate the hand-off of new tools and pipeline improvements at the end of production.
Work with CG Supervisor and R&D/Pipe to address show-specific pipeline needs.
Create documentation and tutorials for tools and procedures.
Develop test plans to ensure quality of both show-based and studio-based software.
Work with artists to improve tool usability.
Monitor and maintain show’s pipeline.
Serve as the conduit to Pipe and R&D for reporting and managing tool and pipeline fixes and new releases.
Work with London Pipe/RnD with easing site to site data and workflow issues.
Makes recommendations and provides solutions to improve quality, efficiency, and workflow.
Develop new tools and scripts as required by the show.
Write tool specs to be developed by London pipe team.
Work with Pipe to maintain, extend, and update pipeline software.

Needs To Know:

4+ years of experience as a Pipeline TD.
Demonstrated ability of analyzing production procedures and solving problems.
Expert level understanding of the Visual Effects pipeline.
Expert knowledge and experience with Python and PyQt.
Intermediate level or better experience with the APIs and use of Maya, Nuke and/or Houdini.
Excellent troubleshooting and debugging skills.
Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Proven ability to work independently and as a lead in team settings.
Proactive and highly motivated.
Advanced-level or better knowledge of Linux/UNIX and the command-line shell.
