VFX PRODUCER

Key Purpose of the Job

The Visual Effects Producer is at the heart of a production. They are required to manage all aspects of a show, typically involving: the initial visual effects breakdown and bid, planning and scheduling of facility resources, managing the visual effects team and monitoring their work during the post-production process. They will liaise with the client and manage this relationship.

Needs To Do

Bid work with the Visual Effects Supervisor
Plan and schedule facility resources with the Visual Effects Supervisor and Facility Resource Manager to create an effective approach to the visual effects work
Ensure the progression of work to the client’s satisfaction
Report the progress of work to the MD on a weekly basis
Report the progress of work to the client on a weekly basis
Plan the day to day work of their production team
Ensure all facility departments are aware of the production’s requirements, for example disk space and rendering

Needs To Know

Minimum of four years experience as a VFX Producer
MS Office; particularly Excel. An understanding of Project is also
beneficialFilemaker Pro or similar database package

EFFECTS TECHNICAL DIRECRTOR

Key Purpose of the Job

Through complex problem solving, using both Maya and Double Negative’s proprietary Voxel based render system and custom pipeline tools, creating VFX for film.

Needs To Do

The position of FX Technical Director requires someone with a thorough knowledge of 3D Computer Graphics, with several years of experience in a similar role working on broadcast or film projects.

Needs To Know

Full knowledge of Maya (Mel and Houdini knowledge a plus)
Effects animation experience
Familiarity with pipeline issues
Experience in producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam and explosions, plus experience with particle 2 rendering voxel based systems
Minimum of 6 months demonstrable experience in effects work on feature films
A good general TD BG is desirable

Lighting artists ensure there is consistency in lighting, colour balance and mood between the various elements of a shot or scene.

Create lighting set ups and/or work with current set ups
Create efficient rendering setups to optimise farm usage
Scrutinise the colours and directions of all light sources in the real-world scene and replicate them in CG
Stay on schedule and meet deadlines whilst maintaining the highest level of standard

Needs To Know

Proven experience in shot look development
Good understanding of colour space
Knowledge of lighting techniques
Familiarity with pipeline issues and problem solving
Knowledge of other disciplines within VFX, including modelling and UV mapping, texturing, camera tracking is desirable
Extensive experience in Maya

MODELLER

Key Purpose of the Job

Modellers create highly detailed models suitable for use in visual effects work for film, that cover a wide range of organic and non-organic objects.

Needs To Do

Work closely with the texture painters, shader writers, look development artists and the riggers to generate models that are suitable for feature film work.
Create models that may be organic in nature, such as various creatures or characters, or they may be models of rigid objects such as cars, buildings, props or sets. They will need to make use of a wide range of reference materials.
Create models from scratch or from scans, using reference photography, maquettes, miniatures or other set models.
Work closely with leads to determine an appropriate level of detail for any given model.
Work closely with the riggers to produce models that meet their work flow requirements, and with texture painters to determine the optimal UV layout for a model.

Needs To Know

Strong spatial awareness and a good sense of form, scale and proportion.
A keen eye for detail
A full working knowledge of modelling in Maya
Ability to work with packages such as Mudbox or Z-brush is an advantage
Ability to create polygon and sub-division surface modelling. Knowledge of NURBS modelling is not generally required, but a plus
Ability to deliver a “clean” model with tidy polygon/sub-d placement and good basic UV layout for texturing
Strong understanding of linux/ unix based operating systems
Ability to judge when to model detail or have the detail added through the shading, by liaising with the shader writers and look development artists.
At least 3 years experience in feature film. Experience in other areas of visual effects (TV, Games) will also be taken into account.

TEXTURE ARTIST

Job Title: Texture Artist

Key Purpose of the Job

To create photo realistic textures and other related maps or images for mapping on to 3D objects.

Needs To Do

In most visual effects work, the textures need to be created to a high level of realism and fit the requirements of the model pipeline and shading set up. It will be essential to work closely with the other members of the project team in these areas. It will be necessary to learn some of our in house systems and become fluent in their use, as well as learn other off the shelf packages as required. Images may need to be created from scratch, but it is more likely that the artist will need to make use of extensive reference photography as source material. They may also need to source their work from a variety of other visual resources (paintings, reference books, architecture).

Needs To Know

A full working knowledge of Photoshop, or similar paint package, is vital. Knowledge of Body Paint, Deep Paint or other 3D paint packages would be a big advantage.
Strong visual skills – a good eye for detail, scale, composition, colour and form. Supporting artwork such as a portfolio will be considered, but is not essential.
A good knowledge of how the texture painting work fits into the bigger picture, particularly in relation to the Modelling and Shading &Look Development areas.
Work closely with a Modeller to determine a optimal UV layout.
Comfortable with Windows and/or Mac operating systems. A good knowledge of Linux would be an advantage. Knowledge of Maya and/or rendering software a plus.
At least 1 years experience in feature films would be beneficial. Experience in other areas of visual effects (TV, Games) will also be taken into account.
