Character Animator

Job Title: Character Animator

Job Description

Dovetail Games are looking for a highly talented and dedicated Character Animator / Artist to work with a small and focussed team on a new simulation game based in their Chatham studio. As an animator you’ll be integral to realising the teams’ gameplay aspirations, shaping the simulation to satisfy the high quality targets in place for this exciting new digital hobby.

Key aspects of the role include but are not limited to;

• Apply animation principles to create high-quality character, animal and environment animations while optimizing them to meet technical constraints.
• Produce animations as needed by interpreting the intention of the Creative Director and Lead Artist.
• Be able to quickly prototype animation systems that will serve as a basis for animation- and gameplay-related discussions.
• Develop pipelines for efficiently getting animation from 3D tools such as 3DS Max into third party engine technologies and continuously improve character rigs and export tools reduce time from concept to game ready assets.
• Estimate the time required to carry out own tasks and manage time to meet deadlines
• Ability to work with designers, programmers and other departments to realise gameplay to a high quality.
• Be confident to own an animation set and able to input creative solutions to gameplay problems.
• Manage and maintain animation libraries.

• BA degree in fine arts or equivalent work experience

• Two or more year’s experience working in the games industry as a character animator
• Advanced knowledge of relevant 3D art & animation packages – including 3DS Max
• Must exhibit strong traditional animation skills and be able to demonstrate that knowledge.

• Unreal Engine experience

GUI Artist

Job Description

Dovetail Games are seeking to recruit an experienced User Interface designer to work in our Chatham office. You will assist in the design, creation and implementation of the game menu systems and related overlays for in-game presentation. You will work closely with the design team to develop an intuitive and seamless user experience as well as designing the graphical elements that you will need to build the User Interface.

Key aspects of the role include but are not limited to;

• Work closely with the creative director, lead artist and UI lead to create mockups and prototypes of UI features
• Partner with the lead artist and UI lead to establish and publish the UI art bible
• Design and create required art assets for use in UI creation.
• Work closely with the designers and UI lead to implement UI features and flow
• Rapidly iterate upon design implementations to ensure the most intuitive experience is presented to the player.

Technical Artist

Job Title: Technical Artist

Responsible for:

• Researching and developing solutions for complex art and design workflow collaboration with the respective departments.
• Designing, implementing and maintaining art and level design production paths using both off-the-shelf and proprietary software
• Creating training files, examples, text and tutorials and assisting art and level design department in learning new technologies and processes.
• Reviewing current and emerging technologies and technical developments to get them into the game engine
• Providing feedback on contingency solutions and timelines.

Based at: Chatham with some travel to Godalming

Job Description

Dovetail Games is seeking to recruit a Technical Artist, who will acts as a bridge between the artists and programmers working on a game. The TA will ensure art assets can be easily integrated into a game without sacrificing the overall artistic vision or exceeding the technical limits of the chosen platform. The role is a relatively new one for the games industry, but it is becoming increasingly important as game systems become more complex. The Technical Artist works part of the art team, and coordinates closely with the lead artists and the head of content, as well as with head of tech and the lead programmers.

Key aspects of the role include but are not limited to;

• Research and oversee the implementation of rendering techniques such as normal and specular maps, particle systems and pixel shaders.
• Use diagnostic tools to examine current content and identify areas for improvement.
• The creation of custom tools to improve efficiencies within the art and game teams.
• Keeping up-to-date in changes in technology, both in terms of console hardware, art packages and new techniques.
• Effectively communicate with other leaders including the Art, Technical and Creative Directors.
• Co-ordinate task and resource allocation with the Development Director.

• They should have a detailed knowledge of at least one industry-standard art package
• The use of scripting languages is required, as is an understanding of the limitations of console hardware

• 2+ years’ experience as a Technical Artist in computer generated art, preferably in game development

• Strong knowledge of the Unreal Engine 3/4 and current 3D graphics techniques

The successful candidate must have the ability to design, develop, document, test and maintain systems and game features as well as demonstrate the key soft skills required to work within a quality driven environment.
