China: Supervising TD

LOCATION: SHANGHAI, CHINA

The Supervising Technical Director is responsible for translating the creative visions of the Directors, Producers, and Visual Effects Supervisor into a practical working pipeline. As a department head, the Supervising TD manages a show’s TDs and supervises tool and pipeline development for the show. The Supervising TD works with other show department heads as well as the various studio technology groups to ensure the show’s requirements and issues are addressed. The Supervising TD works with the Head of Global Technical Directors and other Supervising TDs to provide consistency in tools, workflows, and staffing across shows.

Collaboration:

Work with the show, Technology, and studio leadership to define the show’s requirements for tools, processes, and information exchange.

Work with each show department head to understand, plan, and implement pipeline tools and processes for their department.

Liaise with AT for issues relating to show resources and software needs.
Perform as a Key Production Person on studio projects as requested by the studio or the show.
Partner with Studio Project Leads to ensure the show’s requirements are met and issues are addressed.
Ensure adequate TD support coverage for each department and the show at large.

Pipeline, Software, and Processes:

Integrates existing pipeline tools or develops new tools/processes as needed to meet the technical vision of the show.
Manages the show’s software releases and policies.
Tests the software used on the show to ensure maximum stability.
Plans and implements show-wide standards to ensure smooth asset transitions between departments.
Maintains a working knowledge of the tools and processes used on the show.
Supervises the development of pipeline tools as needed using current studio standards.
Set up initial job tree and related system/application configurations.
Provide custom tools and processes as required to ensure the show’s successful completion.
Troubleshoot shots and assets as requested.
Ensure show’s final assets are delivered correctly.

Resources:

Work with AT to identify, forecast and track resource requirements of the show as they pertain to disk space, rendering CPUs, and license issues.
Work with AT to plan and implement required resources before they are needed on the show.
Escalate issues to show management regarding resource issues.
Collaborate with AT to ensure that the backup and archival of the show’s data is viable and reliable.

Managerial:

Supervise TDs assigned to the show, giving them clear direction on standards, processes, and expectations.
Appropriately elevate issues and solutions to Production Management effectively.
Mentor TDs to provide guidance, experience and insight. Involved in resolving performance related issues.
Responsible with Production Supervisor for maintaining crew morale. Foster good working atmosphere and ethics.
Deliver reviews with Head of Global Technical Directors and Production Supervisor to crew members; help manage career growth of staff; provide recommendations for promotions.
Work with Head of Global Technical Directors and studio leadership in the casting and staffing of talent on the show.
Help with recruiting and perform interviews. Ensure that TD new hires are provided the necessary training.
Facilitate meetings with TDs to keep the crew informed on show changes and requirements

Qualifications

Production experience in feature film animation
Experience building new pipelines.
Expert knowledge is Linux required.
Strong programming skills. Proficiency in C++, Object Oriented Programming, Python and/or Perl desired.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

Education

B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent.

China: Technical Director

LOCATION: SHANGHAI, CHINA

A Technical Director (TD) provides critical support to a show’s artists and department heads. A Technical Director will design, develop, and implement new tools and processes for a particular show or department. As needed, a Technical Director may be asked to do shot work.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide support and development of tools and procedures to extend and enhance the pipeline.
Assist animators and artists with troubleshooting of shots. Issues may include problems with fur, clothing, particle effects, animation, and rendering.
Support and work with multiple departments, including Modeling, Animation, Lighting, FX, and Research and Development.
Ensure software development follows studio policies and guidelines.
Work closely with other Technical Directors, Production Supervisors, VFX Supervisors, and Production Engineering to maintain and further the production pipeline.
Assist in training and mentoring of other Entry Level Technical Directors.
Reports to the show’s Supervising Technical Director.

Qualifications

Production experience in computer animation, visual effects, or game industry.
Experience with tool integration into existing or new pipelines.
Experience with two or more of the following software packages required; Maya, Nuke, Houdini, Arnold, Katana, RV.
Some knowledge of Linux required.
Strong programming skills. Proficiency in C++, Object Oriented Programming, Python desired.
Ability to establish priorities, work independently or within a group, and work with minimal supervision.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in dealing with both technical and artistic groups. Ability to communicate in English and Mandarin preferred.

Education

B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent.

China: Animation Trainer

THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN SHANGHAI, CHINA.

The Animation Trainer is located in Oriental DreamWorks training department and supports tools, workflow and artistic training in Animation and Character FX.

The Trainer will work closely with those production departments to get working knowledge of production tools, workflow and pipeline, as well as technical and aesthetic skills in production. Trainer will have opportunity to work closely with DreamWorks education department to get practical knowledge on training content development and delivery.

Responsibilities

Instruct or facilitate live, online or time-shift training in curriculum areas of new hire, continue education, special projects and operational skills
Design, create and deliver exercises relevant to each departments education curriculum
Improve and refine training content dynamically to meet departments’ request
Assist Training Manager in managing training class schedule, material assets and training resources
Facilitate production subject matter experts (SME) in the developing and delivering various training approach
Work with DWA Education to localize DWA content for Oriental DreamWorks

Qualifications

3 – 5 years experience in a studio production environment
Strong knowledge of Maya including cloth setups, deformers, hair and fur systems and rigging tools required to animate simple props and create secondary animation
Strong presentation skills
Strong problem solving and knowledge sharing ability
Fluent English and Mandarin communication skills
Prior experience in the field of training and development and/or as a classroom instructor a plus
Interest in education and talent development

Education

A degree in computer science, computer graphics, engineering, art or equivalent
