Framestore London Recruiting Lead FX TD, Head of Pipeline and Lighting TDs

Film – Lead FX TD

We are currently looking for a Lead FX TD to join our team for upcoming projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Create particle, rigid body, fluid, cloth, fur & hair simulations.
Apply lighting and shaders to produce the final rendered image or pass the simulations onto a Lighting TD
Use an array of commercial and proprietary FX tools
Work in partnership with modellers, animators, lighters, texture artists & compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the highest standard
Work within the team on a production to determine the various design solutions needed to create the effects
Design and create images, elements, effects, pipelines, tools and techniques for digital visual effects
Help design solutions where a more procedural approach can be used to help create the effects required
Produce test and often final renders of all FX elements for a shot
Create working quick-comps for review by the supervision team
Leading and managing a team of FX TDs of varying levels and experience
Mentoring and guidance of more junior members of the team
Flagging team issues to Head of FX
Constant communication with Production and Supervisor regarding schedules and deadlines

Experience and skills

Excellent Houdini and/or Maya , with other simulation packages such as Naiad favourable
Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to FX simulation / animation
Experience in producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam and explosion, also simulation techniques for RBD, cloth and hair
Working knowledge of Renderman, Mantra and Arnold preferred, experience with other renderers also useful
Good understanding of the entire visual effects process, from shooting to modelling and texturing, animation, rendering and compositing
Familiar with pipeline issues especially working between multiple packages
Working knowledge of at least one compositing application (Shake, Nuke, Halo, etc) and a solid understanding of the compositing process
Should have strong Vex/hscript/Mel scripting skills. Python and Unix shell scripting also advantageous
Programming skills with C/C++ also an advantage along with knowledge of the Houdini HDK and Maya API
Previous experience leading or managing a team of FX TDs

Film – Head of Pipeline

We are currently looking for a Head of Pipeline with previous experience working in Visual Effects in both software development and production based roles. The successful candidate will have multisite experience, be willing to travel and will be interested in managing a team of show based Pipeline TDs.

The Head of Pipeline is responsible for managing and overseeing the work of a team of Pipeline TDs and Developers in order to produce and maintain a generic set of pipeline tools and provide pipeline support for our film projects.

You will:

Co-ordinate the work of pipeline team members
Liaise with CG Supervisors over specific project requirements to ensure development remains generic
Prioritise – sometimes conflicting – demands of VFX projects and supervisors
Work with the Head of CG and senior supervisors to draw a roadmap for long term pipeline development
Ensure all projects are adequately supported by the pipeline department
Organise and chair department meetings and other special interest groups as appropriate
Ensure all development is fully documented and easily accessible
Recruit, train and mentor team members

Essential skills & experience:

CG pipeline experience
CG production experience on A-list VFX film projects
Education to degree level in software engineering, computer science or similar
Excellent communication skills
Ability to lead and manage a team

Desirable skills & experience:

Previous experience in a multisite facility

Film – Lighting TDs

The Lighting TD is responsible for final 3D scene assembly, lighting and rendering of elements required to complete visual effects shots for the creation of high-end photorealistic VFX films.


Light shots as briefed by Lighting Supe and CG Supe
Working closely with CG Supervisors to determine best approach to solve 3D challenges and develop final look
Develop shots in collaboration with the shot Compositor
Create lighting set ups and/or work with current set ups
Create efficient rendering setups to optimize farm usage
Scrutinise the colours and directions of all light sources in the real-world scene and replicate them in CG
Stay on schedule and meet set deadlines while maintaining the highest level of standard
Communicating with Production and Leads regarding schedules and deadlines

Essential Skills:

Experience in shot look development
Good understanding of color space
Knowledge of lighting techniques
Good knowledge of other disciplines within VFX, including modeling and UV mapping, texturing, camera tracking
Good communication and organizational skills
Must be a creative problem solver and have good attention to detail
Must be able to work well under pressure & meet deadlines whilst maintaining high quality results
Ability to work as part of a team as well as alone
Ability to manage own tasks and time well and to work to deadlines
Flexibility and adaptability – Ability to work within a pre-set workflow and pipeline or creativity and problem solving skills to create new ones
Experienced in Maya
Extensive knowledge of rendering packages, such as PRman and Arnold
Extensive knowledge of Python and/or Mel Scripting
Strong understanding of linux \ unix based operating systems

Desirable Skills:

A working knowledge of Houdini
Knowledge and experience in other Render packages
Experience and knowledge in Compositing and Nuke
