Job Description

FX Technical Directors create CG renditions of naturalistic physical or magical phenomena such as fire, water, clouds, smoke, physical destruction and particulate.

Responsibilities:

Creating particle, rigid-body, fluid, cloth, fur and/or hair simulations or animations
Applying lighting and shaders to produce the final rendered image or passing the simulation on to a Lighting Technical Director
Using a variety of commercial and proprietary FX tools including Maya, Houdini and Naiad
Working in partnership with other departments to ensure that shots are delivered to the highest possible standard
Working within the team to determine the various design solutions needed to create the effects
Designing and creating images, elements, effects, pipelines, tools and techniques
Helping to design solutions involving a more procedural approach in order to create the effects required
Producing reviewable composites of all FX elements for a shot. Sometimes FX TDs will be expected to produce final renders too

Essential Skills:

An excellent knowledge of Houdini and/or Maya
A thorough understanding of the techniques and technologies relating to FX simulation and procedural animation
Previous experience producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam and explosions in addition to simulation techniques for rigid-bodies, cloth and hair
A good understanding of animation and an eye for motion
A working knowledge of Renderman or Arnold

A familiarity with pipeline issues, especially working between multiple packages

Animation Supervisor – Dark Ride

We’re looking for a creative, talented Animation Supervisor to join our team. You are interested in being intimately involved in the creation of a story from initial concepts and storyboards, through to transforming the creative into an awesome 100% CG dark ride experience.
The Dark Ride project will be using cutting edge ride technology to create a completely believable feeling that our CG characters and scenes are actually real. It uses many huge screens set around a massive sound-stage full of practical sets that the ride vehicles crashes through during the adventure. The clever use of stereo and perspective warping makes the riders genuinely not know where the physical set ends and the CG begins. The end result is ride that leaves people floored, and they keep coming back for decades to ride it again and again. These are the most extreme entertainment experiences on the planet.
We will be creating CG scenes set in a wide range of very dynamic environments, with many highly detailed and exquisitely animated characters. A custom score and soundtrack with be created to sync up to our work, as well as many live special effects such as water, fire, smoke, moving vehicles. It’s going to be cool.
The Animation Supervisor will be responsible for the overall quality of the animation on the project, for keeping it on brief and for delivering consistent performances by assigning, or casting, the appropriate Animators.

CG Supervisor

The CG Supervisor works with the VFX Supervisor and Producer and is responsible for all CG aspects of a VFX film. Provide clear direction to all CG departments, setting clear objectives and monitoring the process, progress and results
Evaluate the creative requirements of a project, determine the technical implications and make high-level operational decisions (e.g. the balance between third party tools versus proprietary development and the selection of specific technical methodologies)
Clearly brief developers on r&d and pipeline requirements
Determine, modify and maintain the most effective and efficient technical approach and workflow possible

Key Responsibilities:

Work in partnership with Global Head of Technology, Global Facilities Director and other technology leads to provide input into Integrated Advertising technology plan and capex planning.
Manage the recruitment, training and retention and review performance of local technology team.
Creation and maintenance of technical documentation to create shared knowledge base.
Investigate, research and evaluate external suppliers for potential strategic benefit.
Drive performance metrics and benchmarking to assess new and alternative solutions.
Plan, advise and support implementation of large technical projects.
Have a physical presence in the building, organize and attend meetings as needed.
Represent the company at relevant external events (e.g. conferences, trade shows), and with relevant suppliers as required.
Plan, install and support servers, large storage file systems and network infrastructure.
Edit and create scripts as appropriate to facilitate the automation of systems activities.
Ensure technical support is provided to local productions where required to meet daily support needs.
Monitor incoming requests and delegate work efficiently to ensure successful completion of projects and tasks.

Essential Skills:

7+ years supporting a VFX or Commercials Linux environment.
A thorough grounding in digital camera technology and digital delivery specifications.
A working knowledge of Networking and Security concepts and technologies.
A thorough knowledge of industry specific technologies including high performance storage systems and distributed rendering/computing technologies.
Strong Academic background in a Computer Science degree (or similar).
Substantial Linux system administration experience using mainstream Linux OS.
An understanding of technologies such as MySQL, Postgres, NFS, SAN, Apache, Clustered File System, bash and Python.
A strong leader with good analytical, organizational and communication skills.
A proactive and pragmatic leadership style coupled with a client-focused approach to service.
Ability to lead, motivate and support the systems engineering team towards a shared goal.
Ability to solve problems as they arise and remain calm in a fast-paced and highly pressurised environment.
Experience in managing performance and appraising productivity.
Strong team player.
