Description

Gameloft, a leading international publisher and developer of digital and social games with offices in 30 countries including Europe, North America and Asia, is seeking a Game Economy Designer to join our Toronto Studio. Previous hit games such as The Oregon Trail, Modern Combat 4, Brother in Arms 2, N.O.V.A., Avatar, Dungeon Hunter, Despicable Me: Minion Rush, Assassin’s Creed, Terminator Salvation, Asphalt 8, Let’s Golf!, and Order and Chaos are just a few of the 300 games Gameloft has created since it was founded.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

As a Game Economy Designer, your responsibility is to understand how a game works as a service for its customers and how the customers behave in it. You will be identifying and developing the purchase drivers in the game economy context and providing constant data-driven recommendation on design, tuning and pricing in order to improve game financial performance.
To do this, pre-release, you’ll be involved in deciding on what items will be sold in-game, define metrics which allow you to individually measure their impact in a given title and work closely with the development team to see those designs refined and metrics implemented.
Once the game is launched you will analyze the collected data and report which are the performing/underperforming aspects of the game economic model and why, providing solutions to the development team.
This is a position requiring a mix of strong economic and marketing knowledge with a passion for analytical game design and the emerging free-to-play business model.

Day-to-day duties include:

Defining the virtual products and their statistics with the development team and understanding how each of them contributes to the game dynamics;
Identifying the potential sale drivers for the different product categories in the game economy, defining the key points of exposure for those drivers;
Balancing the needs for those virtual products; their relation, life cycle and their streams of availability;
Manage pricing as to create specific price point roles, implement selling strategies for higher price points;
Regularly provide user feedback and stat/price point tuning to development team based on play-testing and data analysis, both during game development and post-release;
Analyze the evolution of the metrics you defined to spot both monetization bottlenecks and facilitators, then report suggestions for the game design or strategy accordingly.

Skills and Profile:

Strong analytical and formal thinking, able to break problems down in their key variables and identify the relations between them;
Statistic knowledge, able to formulate ratios and indexes specific to each game, identifying specific weaknesses and strengths in its economy design;
Understanding of client/server architecture and data collecting pipeline and mining;
Marketing knowledge, able to formulate adequate selling strategies to improve the financial performance;
Econometrics skills, able to model problems into quantitative systems, and draw qualitative conclusions out of quantitative data;
Sensitivity to gameplay and game design, understanding how to build needs and emotions in the context of a game;
Graduate degree in Economics or BA, preferably specialized in Marketing or Strategic direction;
Fluent written and spoken English, concise writing skills;
Strong understanding of MS Excel;
Passion for games on all existing formats: board games, card games, sports, paper RPGs, gambling, all genres of videogames with special focus on MMOs and competitive games;
Up-to-date knowledge of the free-to-play market, both web-based and on smartphones;
Understanding of databases and preferably SQL.

Nice to Have:

Previous experience as Game Designer, Social Designer or Gambling Designer;
Previous experience in econometrics / data mining;
Experience in community managing, marketing or product management.

Art Director/Senior Concept Artist

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing art and supervising graphics production on a photorealistic AAA project. The Art Director will act as the main link between the Art team, the Project Manager, the Creative Director and the Studio Art Director at the Montreal studio for a new 3D IP on high-end mobile platforms.
Defining the game art style while respecting the initial creative direction;
Conveying expectations in terms of quality and content (settings, environments, characters) to the graphics team (concept artists, environment artists, character artists, Animation team) using relevant visual references, concept, production design and mood piece materials;
Setting high quality standards;
Monitoring and approving work done by the Graphics team so that the produced elements respect the vision of the game and meet quality standards;
Directing the evolution and maintenance of art pipeline workflow;
Guiding and mentoring the team, and managing freelancers and external studios as needed;
Reporting to the Project Manager and the Studio Art Director;
Ensuring the accuracy of the art scope, schedule, and budget.

Requirements

A minimum of 5 years’ experience as Art Director, Senior Concept Artist or Lead Artist on a high-profile console/PC AAA project (shipped titles in mobile video games a major asset)
Very good artistic and technical skills (concept art, illustration, sculpting/high-resolution modeling, UI design)
Expertise in 2D/3D graphic production tools. Knowledge of compositing and rendering engines is an asset.
Expertise in the technical capabilities of the main engines on the market. Knowledge of iOS platforms is an asset.
Able to adapt to new management/data tracking systems (SVN Tortoise, Perforce, etc.)

Skills and Profile

Passion for video games and a strong interest in a photorealistic/cinematographic look and feel
Proven mastery of illustration, animation, graphic design, as well as versatility, including knowledge of backgrounds, characters and UI elements
Excellent knowledge of the principles of anatomy and design
Successful track record in developing, mentoring and managing multidisciplinary art teams
Solid understanding/philosophy of game development and the realities of production from a tech, and design standpoint
Good communication and diplomacy skills. Can mobilize and inspire a team.
Keen critical eye and able to express ideas
Independent and thorough, with excellent organizational skills
