ENVIRONMENT LEAD- Image Engine, Vancouver, BC
Contract: starting September, 2013
The Environment Lead must assume responsibility for delivering all the environment work for the film, and
Establish and communicate the creative brief and real-world references from the VFX Supervisor
and Director to the Environment team
Receive creative feedback from the VFX Supervisor and Director, and translate those into more
specific and technical notes for the Environment team
Determine the broad technical and creative approach, in conjunction with the CG Supervisor,
including selecting among various approaches from 2D, 2.5D, and 3D to meet the environment
requirements of the show.
Develop the digital environment workflow (on-the-box), then train and oversee the environment
team in its use
Identify environment challenges and work with the production team to plan and prioritize tackling
Overcome technical issues (day to day problem solving) in conjunction with R&D and the CG
Oversee and develop the environment team, including recruiting and casting the work to the
strengths of the individuals
Work with production and supervisors to accurately estimate and schedule the time and
resources required for all the Environment work on the show
The specific tools and techniques we would expect the Environment Lead to be familiar with are:
Strong knowledge of 3D workflow, including Asset Modeling, Lookdev, Scene Assembly,
Shading, Lighting, and Rendering.
Experience solving technical issues with complex 3D scenes, including render optimization.
Experience with Matte Painting, 2.5D projection, and camera mapping set-ups for environments.
Strong software experience with Maya, Nuke, Renderman compliant renderers, Python or Mel
scripting, and some Photoshop.
Capacity to work collaboratively with 3D artists, Lookdev artists, Matte Painters, and
Knowledge of traditional art skills and techniques: composition, color, lighting; drawing, painting,
The Environment Lead should have experience leading medium to large size teams (i.e. 6+ people) on
large projects (500+ shots) featuring complex digital environment work.
