LEAD COMPOSITOR – Image Engine, Vancouver, BC
Contract: starting early December, 2013
Project: Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie

of passionate artists all working towards realizing the Director’s dream.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO:
 Be aware of the VFX/Compositing supervisor’s vision and assist the team in delivering quality
compositing that meets those standards
 Work with the Compositing Supervisor to set up shots and develop the look of the shots
 Assist compositors in interpreting the VFX/Compositing supervisor’s notes, as needed
 Have a solid understanding of the compositing tools, and pipeline in order to assist the rest of the
compositing team
 Develop new tools or work with a developer or TD to develop tools to ensure the team has the tools
and information they need to carry out their tasks
 Assist the compositing team in solving technical problems so the Compositing supervisor can focus
on the overall production
 Offer guidance and mentoring for junior to mid-level compositors
 Composite multiple types of shots (live action footage, digital still photography, rendered cg elements
and digital paint)to create believable environments that are to be seamlessly integrated into the film
 In the absence of a Compositing Supervisor assigned, act as a creative Lead working closely with
Supervisors and Clients to execute the story and binding physics involved
 Work with Recruiter to assess and interview artists as needed

THIS IS WHAT WE REQUIRE:
 Must have 5+ years progressing experience in compositing digital visual effects for feature film,
including 2+ years as Lead Compositor
 Expert knowledge and demonstrated work experience in Nuke
 Demonstrated expert knowledge of compositing workflow and the compositing application interface
 Good understanding of photography and film and how the interactions of light, lenses and film
emulsions go to make up the image
 Able to composite multiple types of shots from simple to difficult without supervision
 Strong aptitude for technical workflow challenges such as directory structure, file formats, naming
conventions, scripts, automation tools, automated dailies, etc.
 Demonstrated ability to teach/ mentor coworkers and assume leadership role
 Excellent problem solver who can focus on detail, while maintaining the whole picture
 Experience with complex matte extractions and motion tracking is a plus
 Python scripting is desirable

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO:
 Responsible for internal pipeline, communication and efficiency within the Compositing
department
 Determine best approach to solve compositing challenges and develop final overall look
that far exceeds client expectations
 Provide artistic and creative leadership to a dynamic team of artists
 Work closely with Visual Effects Supervisors, Producers and the department heads to
design, develop and produce large and/or small-scale digital composites for use in
feature films
 Accountable for meeting productivity and quota targets on time and at a high level of
quality
 Manage the compositing department and compositing team
 Other duties and responsibilities consistent with your position as may be assigned to you
from time to time

THIS IS WHAT WE REQUIRE:
 Must have 7+ years progressing experience in compositing digital visual effects for
feature film, including 2+ years as Compositing Supervisor
 Must have a thorough understanding of traditional color process (ie film negative, print
stock) and how traditional film is processed into digital film
 Must have a thorough knowledge of the scanning and recording process
 Must have a thorough understanding of modern processes (ie red footage)
 Must have a thorough understanding of file formats (ie DPX, Open EXR and various
other raw formats)
 Must have thorough knowledge of node-based compositing systems (i.e. Nuke)
 Must have a clear vision with solid leadership skills and an approachable attitude
 Experience in a management/supervisor role
 Strong communication skills are critical

Senior Digital Environment Artist

Senior Digital Environment Artist – Image Engine, Vancouver, BC
Contract: starting late October/ early November

working in a strong, R&D supported pipeline, a friendly and collaborative environment, and with a group
of passionate artists all working towards realizing the Director’s dream.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The Senior Digital Environment Artist must assume responsibility for delivering all the 3d environment
work for the film, and more specifically:

• Have a very strong eye and aptitude for creating and rendering complex digital environments.
• Develop the look of the 3d environments using real-world references.
• Receive and execute creative feedback from the VFX Supervisor and Director
• Determine the broad technical and creative approach, in conjunction with the CG Supervisor,
including selecting among various approaches from 2D, 2.5D, and 3D to meet the environment
requirements of the show.
• Create clean and efficient template environment setups that can passed to and rendered by
other members of the lighting team
• Assist in the ongoing development of the digital environment workflow and related toolsets.
• Identify environment challenges, such as memory and render-time constraints, and work with
the production team to plan and prioritize tackling them.
• Overcome technical issues (day to day problem solving) in conjunction with R&D and the CG
Supervisor.
• Work with production and supervisors to accurately estimate and schedule the time and
resources required to render the 3d environments on the show

THIS IS WHAT WE REQUIRE:

 Strong knowledge and experience with 3D workflow, including Asset Modeling, Lookdev, Scene
Assembly and layout, Shading, Lighting, and Rendering.
 Experience solving technical issues with complex 3D scenes, especially raytrace render
optimization.
 Experience with Matte Painting, 2.5D projection, and camera mapping set-ups for environments.
 Strong software experience with Maya, Nuke, Renderman compliant renderers, raytracing,
Python or Mel scripting, and some Photoshop.
 Capacity to work collaboratively with 3D artists, Lookdev artists, Matte Painters, and
Compositors.
 Good communication skills.
 Knowledge of traditional art skills and techniques: composition, color, lighting; drawing, painting,
photography
 Leadership experience a plus.

The Senior Digital Environment Artist should have experience on large projects (250+ shots) featuring
complex digital environment work.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO:

 Analyzes shots to determine the type of roto/prep required for the team and distributes and
manages work accordingly.
 Trains, mentors, and motivates new and existing staff
 Expected to establish and maintain good communication as well as the quality of work produced
by the department
 Accountable for meeting productivity and quota targets on time and at a high level of quality
 Holds daily sessions and gives direction/ feedback to artists
 Assists with software decisions and communicates with IT regarding roto/paint needs
 Works on the box, as required, performing roto/ paint duties
 Other duties and responsibilities consistent with your position as may be assigned to you from
time to time

THIS IS WHAT WE REQUIRE:

 At least 2-4 years’ experience with Nuke (focused on increasingly difficult Roto and Paint tasks)
 Must have a strong eye for detail
 Excellent communication, problem solving and leadership skills.
 Fully understands an “iteration intensive” shot pipeline
 Good understanding of photography and film and how the interactions of light, lenses and film
emulsions go to make up the image
 Ability to take direction so that design changes can be efficiently made
 Traditional painting and illustrating abilities are desirable
