Job Description

Industrial Light & Magic UK is looking for a 3D Artist to join our Advanced Development Group (ADG) team.
ADG develops tools and techniques for high-quality computer graphics and simulation. Our goal is to expand and enhance the process of creative storytelling in the Star Wars universe through real-time rendering of visuals that approach motion picture quality.
As a 3D Artist in the ADG group, you will use and help develop new techniques for real-time asset creation, and collaborate with our San Francisco team, to leverage existing knowledge and solutions. You will create and polish high detail assets for use in transmedia content.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the ADG team to create and polish existing 3D art assets.
• Learn and help develop proprietary pipelines.

Requirements

Required Skills:

• A strong 3D portfolio showcasing hard-surface modeling
• Demonstrable knowledge of lighting, color, composition, and experience of current trends in real-time materials
• Must have a technical aptitude
• Experience in creating art for use in real-time, high-end 3D game engines (PC, game console)
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to create 3D models based on concepts
• 2D experience and strong Photoshop skills
• Extensive experience of current 3D packages (Maya)

Preferred Experience:

• Extensive experience of game asset production
• Experience of high end game rendering techniques (e.g. normal mapping, complex/layered materials, sub-division surfaces)
• Experience of using modern commercial game engines (e.g. Unreal, CryEngine, Unity)
• Knowledge of level of detail techniques

As part of ADG you will provide general project support so the team is able to operate in an organized and efficient manner. Primary emphasis is on scheduling, communication and coordination on behalf of the project leadership.

Responsibilities

• Schedule, track, and manage assigned work. Ensure work is on schedule and is meeting internal and external deadlines.
• Serve as key communication liaison between all parties relevant to your work. Provide updates, priorities, reschedules, and status of all tasks.
• Generate & distribute weekly updates on production logistics as requested.
• Anticipate and communicate issues to leadership team(s) to reach solutions in a timely manner.
• Primary point person for organizing dailies and reviews. Take notes regarding feedback and decisions made and enter any required information into the system so as to provide updates to all others impacted.
• Making work and progress visible via story mapping, backlogs, roadmaps, sprint plans, burn-downs, and summary reports
• Perform special projects and responsibilities as needed.
• No relocation will be offered for this position.

Requirements

Required Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a technical field (e.g. games, software dev).
• Three years work experience as a project manager or coordinator in software or game development
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Strong understanding of agile methodologies, especially Scrum and lean product development, and relevant tools.
• Must possess very strong organizational and communication skills and be able to handle a variety of tasks in an efficient manner while meeting deadlines.

Preferred Experience:

• Knowledge or experience in visual effects production
• Experience using Shotgun or similar production tracking program
• Experience using Atlassian tools

As part of ADG you will develop new techniques for real-time rendering, deliver tools and technology that empower storytellers, and collaborate with our ADG team in San Francisco, to leverage existing knowledge and solutions. You will set new bars for what can be achieved with real-time rendering.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical workflow expertise and support in the research and production of cutting edge visual effects such as smoke, fire and explosions, and in the use of physically based lighting for real-time content
• Work with the VFX Supervisor, rendering and simulation engineers to develop and extend real-time engine features and workflow
• Investigate the best ideas and results in the high-end visual effects and real-time fields, and provide ways to scale between them
• Develop and use new techniques and tools for simulating and rendering complex and directable smoke, fire, explosions, and other 3D fluid based systems in real-time as well as leveraging technology to approximate these effects for efficient rendering and practical workflow
• Organize, and provide script and workflow support for lighting, materials, post-production and visual effects pipelines
• Work with artists and engineers to help generate high-end assets for use in a real-time engine (textures, particle systems, materials, lighting rigs)
• Plan and manage tasks and schedules to meet key milestones

Requirements

Required Skills

• Experience of defining and implementing cutting edge visual effects
• Strong 3D math skills and understanding of physics, particle systems and lighting principles as they pertain to this field
• Strong background in a visual effects production environment in film or games
• Strong knowledge of scripting languages and art production workflow
• Demonstrable experience of simulating and rendering high-end particle systems and fluids
• Deep experience of one or more industry standard DCC packages (Maya, Houdini, etc) and how to import and export data between them
• Collaborative, self-motivated individual with excellent problem solving skills

Preferred Experience

• Practical experience in working with current high-end commercial game engines (Unreal, CryEngine, Unity)
• Familiarity with physically based lighting and materials
• Experience of shader languages (HLSL/GLSL/Cg)
• Experience with GPGPU or Compute shaders
• Understanding of software-based renderers (e.g. RenderMan, Maxwell, V-Ray, etc)
• Experience of visual effects production, lighting and post-processing in games or similar real-time environment

Rigid Body Simulation Artist

Job Description

Simulation artists are responsible for simulating rigid bodies. Experience with Houdini a plus. 3-5+ years production experience or feature film experience with effects simulation work required. Demo reel required. Artist will set up and run rigid body simulations as well as complete necessary corrective work before hand-off to render.
Set up and run rigid body simulations.
Create and fracture geometry for use in rigid body simulations.
Final corrective shape work as needed.
Ability to create advanced Houdini rigid body simulation and fracture setups that are user friendly for junior simulation artists a plus.

Requirements

At least 3 years work experience required in 3D CGI for digital animation, visual effects or producing rigid body simulations for feature film.
Proficiency with Linux is required.
Expertise with Maya required.
Experience with C++, Mel, Python, or other scripting languages a plus.
Feature Film experience required.
Experience in corrective sculpting.
A demo reel demonstrating artistic and technical ability is required for this role.
