FX Technical Director

Job Description

The Effects TD generates FX animation, procedural simulation, dynamic simulation, particle and fluid systems for feature film visual effects. They are responsible for lighting, rendering and moderate-level compositing of complex shots with guidance from their supervisors.
Designs and creates FX animation, procedural simulation, dynamic simulation, particle and fluid systems.
Light complex/multiple creatures (hairy or furry creatures) and elements.
Can set-up and wrangle heavy particle effects and enormous crowd shots.
Can set-up and run extremely complex hairy or furry creatures.
Excellent pipeline scripting ability.
Solid compositing ability, can wrangle blue-screen extractions, working knowledge of Nuke.
Can write plug-ins, debug simulations and write set up and surface shaders with proficiency.
Can write/hack procedural surface shaders and volumetric shaders with proficiency.
Can animate moderate objects with proficiency.
Can pick-up new techniques quickly and easily and can debug just about anything.
Sets a standard for all Technical Directors in continually raising the bar for speed, quality of work and adaptability.

Requirements

3-5+ years production experience or feature film experience with effects simulation work.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or computer graphics.
Demo reel required.
Ability to work with competency, energy and enthusiasm within a team environment with minimal supervision to complete a shot.
Exhibits excellent listening and communication skills, able to receive direction and criticism.
Excellent presentation/communication skills in dailies/shot review by clearly and briefly outlining what has been accomplished and what next should be addressed in the shot.
Engages in the creative process without ego, and accepts all final decisions with a positive and supportive attitude.
Demonstrates an excellent aesthetic eye, anticipating potential problems and using knowledge of how to use the tools to achieve the desired look.
Demonstrates superb problem-solving skills and takes the initiative to offer ideas and suggestions.
Prioritizes tasks and manages time very well.
Linux and scripting ability in Python preferred.
Experience in MEL preferred.
Advanced simulation experience with either Houdini, Maya, XSI, 3DS Max or other software, and the ability to write expressions.

Job Description

The Senior Production Engineer is responsible for architecting and developing aspects of the VFX production pipeline. They will be active in both leading development projects and mentoring staff and associate production engineers.
Responsible for leading development projects for new workflow and/or tools.
Communicates with artists and productions to determine technical requirements and disseminate information regarding project status.
Creates new tools and workflows.
Exercises independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining a goal.
May have singular responsibility for a project.
Coordinate activities of others as a project lead.
Advises/assists other engineers with maintenance and bug fixing of existing tools.
Serves as knowledge resource for workflow and tools used in production at ILM.
Updates and features additions to existing tools.
Provide support to local productions to keep the pipeline running smoothly.
Troubleshoot pipeline issues.
Provide training and assistance to artists on toolsets and workflows.
Expected to lead discussions surrounding future workflow and tool development.
Collaborates with artists and productions to develop efficient workflows and supporting tools.
Participate in the activities of the globally distributed production engineering team, including:
Development and support activities.
Regular status and planning meetings as time zones permit.
Adhere to development best practices and standards defined by Production Engineering Supervisor.

Requirements

Education / Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in Computing Science or Graphics discipline, or equivalent professional experience
6-10 years of experience in the visual effects or computer animation industries

Job Description

The compositor combines live action and computer generated elements into visual effects shots that realize the vision and creative direction of the client and Visual Effects Supervisor. The compositor is ultimately responsible for the aesthetic integrity and technical quality of the final image delivered to the client.
Together with the Compositing Supervisor and Visual Effects Supervisor, evaluate the creative and technical approach for assigned shots.
Perform all tasks associated with the compositing process, including 2D tracking, matte extraction, layering of elements, and color grading on moderately difficult to difficult shots.
Maintain the overall look, color balance, and quality for assigned shots and sequences to create uniformity in all finished work.
Ability to work collaboratively with artists from other disciplines.

Requirements

Education / Experience:

• BA in Computer Graphics or equivalent experience
• Minimum of 3 yrs of compositing experience in a feature film or commercial production environment

Required Skills / Competencies:

• Ability to work gracefully under pressure to meet deadlines

Preferred Skills / Competencies:

• Ability to write Nuke gizmos and/or plugins is a plus
• Python and/or C++ experience a plus

Technical Skills:

• Strong knowledge of Nuke
• Strong aesthetic skills in judging photo-realism and color

Senior Technical Directors are responsible for autonomously lighting, rendering and moderate-level compositing of very complex shots needing only initial direction and guidance from their supervisors.

• Can set-up and wrangle heavy particle effects and enormous crowd shots in Prman and Zeno autonomously.
• Can set-up and run extremely complex (hairy or furry creatures) autonomously.
• Excellent pipeline scripting ability.

• Can write plug-ins, set-up sequences, debug simulations and write set up and rman surface shaders with proficiency.
• Can write/hack rman procedural and volumetric shaders as well as MentalRay procedural, volumetric and surface shaders with proficiency.
• Can animate moderate objects with proficiency.
• Excellent knowledge of Renderman and other unbiased rendering systems.
• Needs to know one or more major 3d application – Maya, XSI or Zeno.
• Can pick-up new techniques quickly and easily and can debug just about anything.

Creature TDs are responsible for setting up and running flesh-surface, hair, cloth, rigid body simulations as well as able to wrangle rigging and creature pipeline issues proficiently under the direction and guidance of their supervisors.
Set up and run proprietary cloth, hair, flesh surfaces and rigid body simulations.
Hero-creature enveloping using a combination of commercial software packages and proprietary tools.
Run flesh-volume simulations.
Wrangle creature rigging issues for artists in other disciplines.
Basic proficiency in another discipline: modeling, viewpaint, TD, or animation.
Mentor entry level artists.
Script utilities/tools/plug-ins in various software packages.
Create dynamic simulations in packages such as Maya/XSI.
Wrangle creature pipeline issues for artists in other disciplines.
MOCAP data re-targeting in XSI/Maya.
Act as wrangler for a creature and/or a specific technique used across multiple creatures.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Computer Visualization, or Computer Animation required.
At least 3 years work experience required in 3D CGI for digital animation, visual effects or producing CG characters and creatures for visual media.
Proficiency with Linux is required.
Expertise with Maya and/or other high-end animation software is required.
Experience with C++, MEL, Python, or other scripting languages is desirable.
Feature Film experience required.
Experience in corrective sculpting. Knowledge of anatomy and enveloping.
A reel demonstrating artistic and technical ability is required for this role.
