Matchmoving is the replication of the real set, camera and camera move within the computer for later use by animators and technical directors. Each shot in which 3D computer graphics are to be added begins with a matchmove. In the CG Layout process, Camera Matchmoves and original CG camera moves are integrated to create the framework of each Sequence. Often this includes manipulating both 2d and 3d elements, while maintaining accurate camera perspective. In some cases a sequence might be entirely Computer Generated with no live action background elements.
Converts background plates to various formats to use with specific software to create digital motion files that match the plate photography. This includes animating any live action character or relative object in the scene.
Establish character blocking, camera positioning and animate camera movement.
Provide technical set-up of shots for downstream production departments.
Generate 2D Compositing elements, while maintaining the accuracy of camera perspective.
Models the set geometry used to create the matchmove and environment for Animators and Technical Directors.
Lights, renders and composites files with the background to judge the move.
Originate entirely CG camera animation
Works with the CG Supervisor and Project Manager when applicable to estimate project schedules in terms of matchmove staffing needs and makes recommendations in the adjustments to the schedules as necessary.
Team acts as a central hub for all shot preparation to ensure continuity and camera accuracy in CG Elements
Under the direction of the project Supervisors, the Match mover will setup the technical and aesthetic approaches of the matchmove work for a shot, sequence, or even an entire aspect of a show.
Based on project size, and the nature of the work, the Matchmover may be asked to perform Lead Matchmove duties including, providing leadership, guidance and direction to the matchmove team.
Maintains an expert level of knowledge about current developments in matchmove tools for computer graphics, especially in areas that relate to the film industry.

Requirements

Ability to reproduce exact camera moves within a computer environment.
Understanding of photography and the effects of different lenses on perspectives.
Typically has experience as an artist, animator or camera operator.
Advanced knowledge of UNIX, Softimage, Maya and/or XSI.
Must have a willingness to learn new tools, proven ability to be detail-oriented and to work efficiently within a production environment.
Excellent problem solving skills including the ability to work under tight deadlines.
Good written and oral communication skills including strong interpersonal skills.
Experience in gathering information on location for Matchmovers.

Requirements

BA/BS or equivalent degree or diploma in computer visualization or computer animation or relevant work experience
BfA/BS in art or design or relevant understanding of colour theory, composition, lighting, aesthetics and how these apply to lighting and rendering in 3d
Ability to plan and execute complex 3d lighting scenes including working with layers and passes, doing complex comps and optimizing scenes and renders
Some photography experience a plus (understanding of compoisition, photography terms like depth of field, FOV, aperture, exposure, dynamic range)
Minimum 3 years experience using high-end 3D software (Maya, XSI, 3dsMax Renderman, Mental Ray)
Working experience with compositing software (Shake, Nuke, Combustion, AfterEffects or similar)
Strong communication skills (written, verbal and interpersonal)

Production Assistant

This entry level position provides administrative and backup support to the production team while providing an opportunity to learn about the production environment and process at ILM. They can be temporary positions but may evolve into longer term project positions (from as short as two weeks to as long as one year).

Requirements

• Support the Production team in day to day activities, assist in production errands and tasks, and be the go-to for general needs to the entire crew.
• Technical Assistance: Will need some technical ability and knowledge required to run Linux and Windows based programs for reviews with crew (dailies), clients, external vendors, and various meetings.
• Conference room setup and troubleshooting, Viewstation setup and troubleshooting, basic technical troubleshooting (running generic scripts to resolve issues).
• Manage cc lists for reviews, shot notifications, tools updates, etc.
• Meeting Setup: PA will be responsible for notifying crew of all meeting/review times and locations (and making sure they attend), prepping the review playlists, and possibly taking notes. Act as assistant to the Production Coordinators/Managers to help follow up on items after various meetings.
• Internal Tracking Database: Will assist Production Coordinators in making sure internal tracking tools are up to date.
• Schedule and Shot Tracking: Assist the Production Coordinators and Managers in making sure the physical schedule boards are created, magnets are printed and the information is up to date. Also assists coordinators to ensure all vfx elements are accounted for (matching the Internal Tracking Database).
• Show Schedule: Responsible for overall show calendar in Outlook in keeping everyone on the same page of what’s happening on a daily basis (dailies, meetings, client reviews, etc)
• Contact Information: Maintain internal crew contact information, all internal email aliases for the show, and show webpage.
• Craft Service and Overtime Meals: Maintain supply of snack foods and drinks for crew of 50-150. Responsible for the ordering, delivery, and clean up of meals as needed (lunch, dinner, weekend). Conceive, order, and set up of thematic crew parties, as needed.
• Shipping and receiving (digital): Responsible for delivering and receiving all files shared between clients, external vendors, and internal crew at various locations. Keep a meticulous account of all files transferred.
• Office support: Collect and manage petty cash, expense reports, organizing travel, etc.

Additional Notes:

• • Bachelor’s degree in film production or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum two years of related experience.
• Computer literacy; work processing and spreadsheet experience helpful. 50 wpm typing.
• This position is on a guaranteed 50 hour work week, with overtime and some Saturday work required.
• Ability to work on a computer/keyboard for long periods of time
• Ability to work overtime on an ongoing basis
• Ability to travel as needed

You will be a key professional member of LAS BV and will have responsibility and accountability for working both individually and within a team, with tasks ranging from completing everything on a small number of shots to working on specific tasks within a larger body of work.
The 3D Generalist demonstrates a strong base of knowledge in 3D Computer Generated Imagery Creation. Successful candidates will display a high degree of proficiency in some and a varied skill level across most of the areas of model, texture, shading/look development, basic hard surface animation and FX simulation as well as the ability to composite their own work. The 3D Generalist will work both individually and within a team, with tasks ranging from completing everything on a small number of shots to working on specific tasks within a larger body of work.
Senior 3D Generalists will also demonstrate the ability to break down complex VFX shot work into achievable workflows using a variety of off-the-shelf plug-ins and scripts. As such, a strong technical background with the ability to modify and/or create scripts to develop workflows is key to their success.
Successful candidates can model, texture, shade, light, look development and composite CG images or shots, however candidates will be considered if they demonstrate themselves to be exceptional in only one area, as long as they have some experience in all others and are willing to learn.

– Uses artistic and technical skills to work on all aspects of CG images or shots
– Lead creation of outstanding artwork within a shot, using various software programs
– Participates as a team member in determining various aesthetic solutions
– May train, mentor or supervise the work of entry, mid and mid-high level generalist artists at the discretion of the Department Supervisor

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in Computer Graphics, Fine Arts or equivalents having gained a keen knowledge and ability in perspective value matching 35-mm photography.
Strong traditional art skills including knowledge of color, lighting, perspective, and composition.
6+ years work experience required in 3D CG for digital animation or visual effects film.
Must have extensive knowledge of matte painting techniques and a high proficiency in Photoshop
Strong knowledge of camera focal lengths, good sense of composition and an understanding of different output requirements.
Understanding of compositing software and techniques, 3D modeling software and techniques, and knowledge of 3D animation software with regard to creating camera moves and scenes.
Strong communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills required.
Ability to learn quickly and assimilate new information.
Attention to detail required.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse collection of individuals.
A portfolio demonstrating matte painting experience and traditional art work, together with drawings, paintings, photography, etc.

Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the department under the direction of the Virtual Production Department Supervisor & Director of Studio Technology. Acts as a primary department contact for all stage services and insures a high level of client service and a timely response to all requests.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Works closely with Production and other departments to evaluate virtual production needs for all shows and proactively coordinates available resources to ensure timely and efficient completion of projects.
• Responsible for the coordination of all digital camera packages. Responsible for checking these items out to production, tracking the equipment, sending out for maintenance, ordering parts, etc.
• Consult with the virtual production supervisor and productions to organize consolidate, standardize, and refresh all set and stage equipment.
• Maintains an asset-tracking system and oversee vaulting physical capture equipment (cameras, hard drives, calibration objects)
• Responsible for scheduling the stage for internal production and external clients . Keeps the stage crew and clients up to date as schedules change.
• Creates and publishes shoot schedule/call sheets.
• Assists the Stage crew in prioritizing work as needed.
• Maintains high client service levels and integrity of department. Maintains daily and weekly communication with production and throughout the company.
• Sets up, attends and publishes notes on show virtual production kickoff meetings for our department.
• Coordinates high visibility client demos and special presentations..
• Participates in the development and maintenance of all department webpages and online request forms.
• With limited supervision, works closely with CG, Production, and other service groups to increase efficiency across departments whenever possible. Contribute input and make recommendations to refine our processes and procedures.
• Responsible for the coordination of all digital camera packages. Responsible for checking these items out to production, tracking the equipment, sending out for maintenance, ordering parts, etc.
• Responsible for coordination of all location laptops.
• Responsible for reviewing invoices, and other paperwork for accuracy prior to manager approval. Resolve errors with accounting when necessary.
• Responsible for all ordering of production and administrative supplies based on requests from area leads.
• Maintains a vendor contact list, price lists, and purchase requisition database.
• Performs special projects under the supervision of the Virtual Production supervision team.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Film/related field or equivalent work experience required plus 3-5 years of related experience, preferably in visual effects or live action production.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively schedule projects and/or resources required.
• Advanced knowledge and understanding of film production and post-production techniques and terminology required.
• Must have strong client service and communication skills.
• Must be detail and solution oriented.
• Strong organizational skills to deal with disparate physical and digital datasets.
• Ability to work independently and with a team.
• Must have the ability to juggle multiple projects, work with diverse personalities and work within strict deadlines.
• Proven ability to provide innovative troubleshooting in a fast paced environment.
• Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information in a discreet, diplomatic, and professional manner.
