Job Description

Primary emphasis is on scheduling, communication and coordination for a specific group (discipline) of artists (or multiple groups) on any given project. Reports to Project (“Show”) Producer and Production Manager, while also working with other Coordinators on the project in keeping the show operating in an organized and efficient manner. Coordinators are also responsible for working with and delegating to the project Production Assistants. Each Coordinator usually works closely with their specific group of artists’ Supervisor or Lead in crewing, scheduling, and managing that group’s body of work. Coordinators are significant points of information on the show and need to be able to balance multiple needs, projects, and tasks at one time.

Work closely with your discipline supervisors and/or leads in crewing, casting and scheduling your discipline’s body of work, keeping in mind the overall show schedule, client reviews, bids, and other discipline needs.
Establish a process for communicating discipline targets, assignments, and priorities to your discipline crew, as well as the overall show crew. This should be daily and/or weekly.
Schedule, track, and manage assigned work within the ILM Internal Tracking Tool as well working with Production Managers to display the information in a physical form (magnet boards / conference rooms) in order to be visible to the team.
Ensure work is on schedule for each department and is meeting internal and external (client) deadlines. Check in with artists on a regular basis regarding workload, targets, needs, etc.
Set up turnovers with discipline crew. Communicate turnover information to all artists assigned to assets or shot.
Track client needs, reviews and deliveries to make sure your discipline hits their targets.
Keep a weekly synopsis of your discipline’s accomplishments and next steps.
If coordinating work from an external company, establish process for working with them that fits with your production team, supervisors, and leads.
Serve as key communication liaison between all parties relevant to your work. Provide updates, priorities, reschedules, and status of all shots at any given moment.
Anticipate and communicate issues to leadership team(s) to reach solutions in a timely manner.
Supervise, delegate to, and train assigned Production Assistant(s).
Act as primary point person for organizing dailies/shot reviews throughout the day on behalf of your discipline Supe/Lead. Take notes regarding feedback and decisions made and enter any required information into the Internal Tracking System/communicate to all so as to provide updates to all others impacted.
Technical ability and knowledge required to run Linux, Windows, and Mac-based programs for reviews with crew (dailies), clients, external vendors, and various meetings.
Conference room, Viewstation and basic technical setup and troubleshooting (running generic scripts to resolve issues).
Prioritization and escalation of technical support issues.
Ability to learn basic commands required to assist artists in file organization, submitting shots and QC-ing movies.
Perform special projects as needed.
May accompany VFX Supervisor and Matchmover on location for blue screen and principle photography work. Responsible for camera reports, shot information sheets, and matchmove information. Must be able to recognize and report back to ILM production any changes to shots that affect the budget.
Serve as the main point person between the Production and VFX Editors. Discuss cut lengths, key frame numbers, editorial discrepancies an other specifics regarding film.
Reserve equipment and resources needed for location and stage work; monitor schedules to avoid conflicts.
Role may require weekend work depending on show schedules

Role may also require:

Travel for plate shoots
Work on the same schedule as first or second unit production

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Film, Art, Drama or related field or equivalent work experience required.
Three years work experience in production to include strong working knowledge of post production techniques and terminology.

Job Description

The 3D Generalist demonstrates a strong base of knowledge in 3D Computer Generated Imagery Creation. Successful candidates will display a high degree of proficiency in some and a varied skill level across most of the areas of model, texture, shading/look development, basic hard surface animation and FX simulation as well as the ability to composite their own work. The 3D Generalist will work both individually and within a team, with tasks ranging from completing everything on a small number of shots to working on specific tasks within a larger body of work.

Job Description

The Technical Assistant I (TA) is responsible for providing front line rendering and data management support for ILM VFX Production teams and the facility. TA’s are also responsible for managing storage by wrangling data through archiving, removing data and following resource management best practices. The TA team ensures full utilization of the render farm during their shift and communicates as technical issues affecting the throughput the farm arise.

Prioritizes overnight renders. Coordinates processor allocations with Production Engineering & Show Production teams. Balances processor demands within show, between shows, and as a share of facility pool.
Responsible for reporting issues with frames post render to the digital artists and CG Supervisors and work to find a solution.
Works to ensure full resource utilization during the night. Manipulates priorities to ensure that renders are completed by next business day. Reports any machine problems or general issues that hinder the completion of renders to the appropriate department.
Monitors disk usage for the facility, with a particular focus on individual shows, and on a shot-by-shot basis within those shows. Coordinates show storage needs on a long-term basis with Digital Resource Manager.
Works with the Digital Resource Manager, CG Supervisors and Production Engineering team to ensure show follows proper data management procedures.
Prioritizes, manages, and maintains archive of show data, including creation of archival backups for shows, maintenance of archive database, storage and retrieval of physical media for recent show archives. Fulfills all data restoration requests, including archival research to locate requested data.
Responsible for maintaining and updating department tools. Works closely with Production Engineering to ensure that code is clean and well maintained.
Participates in development projects; writes production and pipeline scripts and tools as required to support ongoing technology efforts.

ILM’s Studio Talent Group is seeking a Training Technical Assistant/Specialist to perform two key roles:

1) To maintain training’s hardware and computing environment to ensure that we are prepared to provide effective training for ILM’s global studios
2) Maintain and development the Studio Talent Group’s tool set, including vidcap, ILM’s open source application which captures X-Windows based desktop sessions into a movie file with audio and our internal technical documentation Content Management System using.

This challenging position will offer the opportunity to discover, develop, and expand one’s skills in a dynamic, diverse, and collaborative environment.

Training Environment:

Maintain resources and standards for Training. Coordinate with technical staff at ILM SF, ILM Singapore, ILM Vancouver and ILM London to determine the needs for Training’s environment. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Ensure that training directories are up-to-date with current generics;
Monitor disk space and report status to all who need to know;
Monitor show-specific scripts;
Set up dot files and make corrections;

The Pipeline TD is responsible for developing and maintaining software tools, providing front-line support to artists, and general troubleshooting of the CG pipeline in a fast-paced, feature film visual effects production environment. Experience in one or more of Maya, Nuke, Houdini or similar.
Ability to communicate cross-discipline and provide innovative solutions to pipeline issues.
Detail oriented and strong self-sufficient trouble shooter.
Good understanding of the entire visual effects process, from shooting to modeling and texturing, animation, FX, rendering and compositing

Preferred Skills/Competencies:

Experience with production database systems
Experience with C, C++
Experience with FX pipelines.
