FX Technical Director

Job Description

The FX TD generates FX animation, procedural simulation, dynamic simulation, particle and fluid systems for feature film visual effects. They are responsible for lighting, rendering and moderate-level compositing of complex shots with guidance from their supervisors.

Designs and creates FX animation, procedural simulation, dynamic simulation, particle and fluid systems
Light complex/multiple creatures (hairy or furry creatures) and elements
Can set-up and wrangle heavy particle effects and enormous crowd shots
Excellent pipeline scripting ability
Solid compositing ability, can wrangle blue-screen extractions, working knowledge of Nuke
Can write plug-ins, debug simulations and write set up and surface shaders with proficiency
Can write/hack procedural surface shaders and volumetric shaders with proficiency
Can animate moderate objects with proficiency
Can pick-up new techniques quickly and easily and can debug just about anything
Sets a standard for all Technical Directors in continually raising the bar for speed, quality of work and adaptability

Requirements

Education/Experience:

3-5+ years production experience or feature film experience with effects simulation work
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or computer graphics
Demo reel required

Required Skills/Competencies:

Ability to work with competency, energy and enthusiasm within a team environment with minimal supervision to complete a shot.
Exhibits excellent listening and communication skills, able to receive direction and criticism
Excellent presentation/communication skills in dailies/shot review by clearly and briefly outlining what has been accomplished and what next should be addressed in the shot
Engages in the creative process without ego, and accepts all final decisions with a positive and supportive attitude.
Demonstrates an excellent aesthetic eye, anticipating potential problems and using knowledge of how to use the tools to achieve the desired look.
Demonstrates superb problem-solving skills and takes the initiative to offer ideas and suggestions.
Prioritizes tasks and manages time very well

Preferred Skills/Competencies:

Linux and scripting ability in Python
Experience in MEL

Technical Skills:

Advanced simulation experience with either Houdini, Maya, XSI, 3DS Max or other software, and the ability to write expressions

The Rotoscope / Paint artist performs plate clean-up and creates digital articulate mattes.

Modifies and removes isolated elements for digitally composited sequences using both procedural and hand painting methods.
Creates digital articulate mattes and performs plate clean-up.
Modifies and removes isolated elements for digitally composited sequences.
Creates digital articulate mattes with computer-aided drawing tools to detail and precision while performing repetitive tasks.
Performs plate clean up; removes unwanted artifacts and composites said artifacts with a clean plate created by the artist using tracking software and scripting. Frame by frame handwork when necessary.
Paints final comps before film-out to resolve last minute problems.
Performs background repair and wire removal.
Maintains up to date knowledge of rotoscoping and how to make shapes animate.
Develops 2D animation skills.
Performs other tasks related to the creation of digital articulate mattes.
No relocation will be offered for this position.

Requirements

2+ years production experience in CG, animation or video
Bachelor’s in Graphic Design, Drawing, Animation or equivalent artistic background
Experience with UNIX, 2D image processing, and Matador/Commotion/SilhouetteFx/Nuke or other similar software required.
Demo reel required.

Texture Supervisor

Job Description

The Texture Supervisor leads a team of surfacing artists who create the desired textures, ensuring that they are created and rendered according to the designs and visual style of the project.

Working under the guidance and direction of the VFX Supervisor, the Texture/Lookdev Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and quality control of creation and rendering of textures for CG assets, ensuring that they will satisfy the style and quality of the production.

Consults with the VFX Supervisor, the Model Supervisor and the Lighting Supervisor, to assess the technical feasibility of elements in the designs and suggest production friendly solutions that will maintain the vision of the film.
Responsible for bidding the work and driving the overall texturing / lookdev schedule, and balancing artistic and productivity requirements, in tandem with production management and other department Supervisors.
Attend all relevant show production and team meetings to promote effective communication throughout the show production team.
Works directly with Texture / Surfacing Leads and Pipeline Supervisors to manage troubleshooting and technical efforts in pipeline workflow development.
In collaboration with Production, assigns work to surfacing artists based on their individual skills and strengths, as needed.
Responsible for reviewing the work of each surfacing artist on a regular basis.
Responsible for guiding artists’ overall professional development, providing performance feedback, facilitating overall team building efforts, and maintaining positive morale amongst the crew.
Participates in the recruiting and staffing of the surfacing team – assesses the work of prospective candidates for the hiring process and works with Recruiting and Talent Management on hiring decisions, as needed.
Participates in the R&D and testing of new software and software updates.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in Computer Graphics, Industrial Design, Fine Arts or equivalents having gained a strong sense of design and surface development.
Minimum 8-10 years’ work experience in 3D CG for digital animation or visual effects film.
Proven track record of successfully working in a Lead and supervisory capacity on several productions.
Experience in UV layout, texture projections, and 2D texture painting in UV layouts.
Experience in shader, hair and fur lookdev work.
Strong Katana experience.
Proficiency in the application and use of textures in one or more 3D applications (Maya strongly preferred).
Proficiency in Mari, Adobe Photoshop. Zbrush and procedural texture writing experience is preferred.
Proficiency with LINUX/UNIX is required.
Knowledge of modeling pipeline a plus.
Demonstrated artistic ability.
Strong communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills required.
Ability to learn quickly and assimilate new information.
Attention to detail required.
Proven experience and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse skillsets and cultural backgrounds.
Thrives in a high pressure, deadline-oriented environment.
A reel demonstrating texturing experience and traditional art work, together with drawings, paintings, photography, etc. Work should include shot breakdown.

Job Description

Responsible for one or more of the following areas: rigging and enveloping hero to background creatures, vehicles and props in Maya, setting up and running cloth, hair, flesh, rigid body destruction, and crowd simulations. Able to wrangle rigging and creature pipeline issues proficiently under the direction and guidance of their supervisors.

Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Responsible for one or more of the following areas: Advanced rigging and enveloping in Maya, set up and run cloth, hair, flesh, rigid body destruction, and crowd simulations
Troubleshoot creature rigging and pipeline issues for artists in other disciplines
Mentor entry level artists
Script utilities/tools/plug-ins
Sufficient knowledge of Maya rigging techniques to optimize the performance of rigs
Participate in reviews, dailies, and department meetings as required
Special projects as necessary

Requirements

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Graphics, Computer Science, or related degree or equivalent experience.
5+ years experience

Required Skills/Competencies:

Experience with advanced hero asset rigging and enveloping in Maya
Experience setting up and running simulation shotwork.

Job Description

Production Engineering is a globally distributed team that develops tools and workflows which act as the foundational infrastructure for ILM’s other departments. As a member of PE’s Media team, your focus will be on the software and pipelines that ILM uses to:

Ingest media from our clients, such as plates, reference imagery, and media from client side editorial
Process and package finished work for delivery back to our clients
Process, track, and review media generated internally by our artists
Keep our internal editorial data in sync with client side editorial

Requirements

Responsible for the development of workflow and tools, under the guidance of a project lead
Creates new tools and workflows
Receives general instruction on work and new assignments
Advises/assists other engineers with maintenance and bug fixing of existing tools
Serves as knowledge resource for workflow and tools used in production at ILM
Updates and features additions to existing tools
Provide support to local productions to keep the pipeline running smoothly
Troubleshoot pipeline issues
Fix bugs and tune workflow tools
Install and configure software
Assist with show work area creation and configuration
Configure the pipeline to meet shows’ needs
Develop per-show tool customizations as determined by show supervisors
Provide training and assistance to artists on toolsets and workflows
Participates in discussions surrounding future workflow and tool development
Collaborates with artists and productions to develop efficient workflows and supporting tools
Participate in the activities of the globally distributed production engineering team, including:
Development and support activities
Regular status and planning meetings as time zones permit
Adhere to development best practices and standards defined by Production Engineering Supervisor

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computing Science or Graphics discipline, or equivalent professional experience
3-6 years of experience in the visual effects or computer animation industries

Required Skills/Competencies:
