Job Description

The 3D Generalist demonstrates a strong base of knowledge in 3D Computer Generated Imagery Creation. Successful candidates will display a high degree of proficiency in some and a varied skill level across most of the areas of model, texture, shading/look development, basic hard surface animation and FX simulation as well as the ability to composite their own work. The 3D Generalist will work both individually and within a team, with tasks ranging from completing everything on a small number of shots to working on specific tasks within a larger body of work.
Senior 3D Generalists will also demonstrate the ability to break down complex VFX shot work into achievable workflows using a variety of off-the-shelf plug-ins and scripts. As such, a strong technical background with the ability to modify and/or create scripts to develop workflows is key to their success.

Job Description

The Media Systems Engineering team is responsible for the moving image systems and infrastructure within ILM. This encompasses the technology and engineering behind the video network and associated storage and playback systems, the theatres and review systems, and the editorial systems. They are responsible for the design and build of these systems as well as ongoing maintenance and the training of operators.
They additionally provide consulting and training services to other ILM departments.
The team plays a pivotal role within the company, ensuring ILM operates an industry leading infrastructure and maintains a high degree of image management excellence for internal operations and in the exchange of data with clients and partners.
We are looking for a Supervisor for this team. This is a San Francisco based position that will be responsible for the infrastructure and systems for all North American studios, and will work in collaboration with the studios outside North America to establish global standards for technology, tools and process.

● Provide technical leadership; ensure that the team is properly trained and following industry best practices

Artist Management

• Primary point of contact for allocated artists in ILM Singapore.
• Recruiting: Work collaboratively with HR & Recruiting to define and communicate ongoing recruitment requirements.
• Long Term Career Development: Manage long term career development for artists – facilitate artists reaching career goals (opportunities for leadership, learning a new discipline, etc.).
• Training: Work with Production, Training and Talent Management to develop training plans for upcoming show needs and ongoing departmental talent development.
• Managing Overhead and Capacity: Plan, communicate and manage overhead labor within overall Fiscal Plan, in partnership with ILM California. Assess overall ILM Singapore capacity on on-going basis to inform production schedule.
• Cross-Utilization: Evaluate and learn individual artist strengths; help develop cross utilization of resources within ILM Singapore and across Studio when required.
• Staffing: Provide expertise for efficient talent distribution across shows.
• Performance Reviews: Facilitate the End of Show Performance Reviews for each artist, and prepare and deliver Annual Reviews. Provide constructive, actionable feedback at review time, and throughout the year.
• Compensation: Negotiate rates/increases, with guidance from Producer and HR.

High level Scheduling/Crewing across Department

• Looks across department to ensure needs of present and future shows are being met with artists; formulates plan of action if that is not the case (training, hiring, etc.).
• Work with Producers and discipline leads to assign artists to shows based on type of work and skill set.
• Interact with Producers and Production Managers on day-to-day crew needs. Coordinate changes with Management and Producers and inform personnel of changes when necessary.
• Maintain regular status meetings with internal shows.
• Manage overall scheduling and crewing strategy across ILM Singapore, using Bodycast and Studiocast systems. Create capacity reports and scenarios regularly. Proactively collaborate with ILM SF team on overall production staffing needs.
• Partner with Production Managers to forecast current and future personnel needs based on input from Portfolio Group and Production. This includes maintaining contact with Producers regarding overall crew size requirements, crew start and end dates and show start/delivery dates as well as incorporating bidding data into facility projections. Flag potential problems in regards to any of those.

Leadership:

• Lead by example.
• Support and promote Lucasfilm Singapore best practices across the shows.
• Understand the limitations of your knowledge (e.g., technical, aesthetic, client-handling skills, etc.) and seek expert advice when appropriate.

The Compositing Supervisor is responsible for leading a team of Compositors and Leads and managing the quality of the compositing work and the overview of color continuity on a show. The Animation Supervisor works closely with the Director in determining the creative and aesthetic approach to the animation and supervises the animation team in achieving the Director’s vision for the film.

Responsibilities:

• Supervises the animation crew to deliver the expected and desired performance and footage quotas.
• Responsible for insuring and maintaining the quality and style of the character performance and acting continuity across the project.
• Consult with CG Supervisor or VFX Supervisor as to the technical feasibility of elements in the script and suggest production friendly solutions that will maintain the vision of the film.
• In consultation with the Director assign work to animators based on their individual skills and strengths.
• Responsible for reviewing the work of each animator on a regular basis and approving shots for submission to the Director.
• Responsible for directing and guiding the overall animation production on schedule and on budget, balancing artistic and productivity requirements, in tandem with production management.
• Direct and coordinate animation fixes and enhancements as per instructed by the Director.
• Partners with Artist Management to guide artists’ overall professional development, providing performance feedback, mentoring, assist with resolving performance issues and maintaining positive morale amongst the crew.
• Attend all relevant meetings to promote effective communication throughout the production team.
• Actively participates in the recruiting and staffing of the animation team – assesses the work of prospective candidates for the hiring process and works with Artist Management on hiring decisions.

Requirements

Education / Experience:

• 4+ years of experience as an Animation Supervisor either in CG Animation or VFX
• Possess advanced animation ability with an expert awareness of animation principles, including acting and action.
• Must have an extremely creative and critical eye for guiding the quality of the animation.
• Must be a skilled decision maker, problem solver and an exceptional communicator.
• Expert knowledge of various software applications. Technical expertise is a plus.
• Proven track record of successfully working in a supervisory capacity on several animation productions.
• Strong communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills required.
• Proven ability to create effective presentation and training.
• Ability to train artists in the theory, technique and practice of character animation.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse collection of individuals.
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in traditional or CG animation.

• Attend all relevant meetings to promote effective communication throughout the production team.

Requirements

• 8+ years work experience required in 3D CG for digital animation or visual effects film.
• Demonstrated team leadership experience preferred.
• Proficiency with LINUX/UNIX is desirable.
• Expertise with Maya is required.
• Demonstrated artistic ability.
• Strong communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills required.
• Ability to learn quickly and assimilate new information.
• Attention to detail required.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse collection of individuals.
• A reel demonstrating effects work required. Work should include shot breakdown.

The ILM Singapore Associate VFX Supervisor is responsible for ensuring work is created to the quality and standards requested by the client and the ILM VFX Supervisor, addressing technical issues, and identifying best practices and approaches as needed.

Responsibilities:

Creative responsibilities: collaborate closely with the ILM Singapore Studio Supervisor and ILM VFX Supervisors in the U.S. to ensure all work that comes through ILM Singapore meets client specifications; creative point person in Singapore responsible for guiding the aesthetic direction of all ILM Singapore work (including making decisions/calls when ILM Singapore Studio Supervisor is not available to provide input); requires strong knowledge and understanding of Lighting, Compositing, Digital Matte Painting, Texturing and Modeling.
Runs dailies, gives crew direction on shots and assets, aesthetic direction and feedback.
Develops methodology and approach to show, including how to get work completed efficiently and within show budget
In conjunction with Producer, develops and executes production plan
Report into and works with ILM Singapore Studio Supervisor to ensure the portfolio of work on all projects is accomplished efficiently, to the required quality standards, and within the schedule.
Lead the crew, provide mentoring, individual training and professional guidance as needed.
Serves as key creative in bid meetings
Work with ILM Singapore Studio Supervisor, ILM Singapore Production Manager (Talent), and Training department to develop curriculum and documentation for the team.
May start early shot production, overseeing asset build, look development and/or effects development while principal photography is in progress.
Partner with ILM Singapore Studio Supervisor, Director of Production Technology, tech team leads, R&D and show supervisors to determine and advise on the optimum technical approach for any given project and the ILM Singapore team, both for immediate show needs and long term strategy.
Maintain constant communication flow with global ILM teams.
Perform ‘hands on’ work on shows as needed.
Work collaboratively with ILM Singapore Studio Supervisor and Recruiting to define and communicate ongoing recruitment requirements including participation in reel reviews, interviewing, and recruitment outreach (as needed).
Develop and maintain thorough knowledge of the individual skills sets of the ILM Singapore VFX artists.
Participate in show and annual performance reviews for the VFX artists.
Maintain a high level of proficiency in current tools and methodologies – both proprietary and 3rd party applications available on the market.

Requirements

Education / Experience:

8-10 years hands-on digital production experience.
Proven track record of successfully working in a supervisory capacity on several major productions (4-5 years).
A demonstrable blend of technical and artistic skills, preferably with experience as a Technical Director or Digital Artist.
Portfolio demonstrating strong traditional art skills.
Reel demonstrating robust high end Feature Film VFX experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Fine Art, or equivalent work experience.

Required Skills / Competencies:

Experience with Rendering software, Nuke, or proprietary equivalent.
Experience with Maya, 3dsMax, XSI, or proprietary equivalent.
Excellent organization and interpersonal skills
