Art Director / Matte Painter

Job Description

The Art Director is responsible for interpreting ideas communicated by the Director/Key Creative of a show(s) into traditional concept art and storyboards for Feature Films or Animated Features.
Responsible for creating or providing concept art, storyboards, photo reference, and video reference to communicate ideas and develop goals for the design and look of a show(s)
Partner with Art Directors at ILM SF on visual development across shows with a focus on shows for the Singapore studio
Provides conceptual paint-overs and look direction for sequences and key shots for directorial approval. Art work is then used as a template for CG artists to complete work.
Work closely with VFX Supervisor, and Lighting and Comp Supervisors to help define the look on shots and provide guidance for lighting and compositing
Partners with Generalist Lead in providing creative direction and feedback to Generalist team, supervising the creation of artwork, storyboards, and material
Help drive shots or sequences forward
Oversees the creation of CG assets from Concept art, ensuring design continuity through the production process.
Partners with ILM SF Art Directors, ensuring work is done according to the specifications of Director/Key Creatives
Tracks and archives all work including project files, renders, source images, and textures
May also function as a matte painter for some shot work
Actively participates in dailies and transmissions

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and/or 3+ years experience in Entertainment industry
Experience in Film or Video Effects and/or Film production, including knowledge of cinematic techniques, language and shot composition
Full portfolio demonstrating high-level traditional art skills and breadth of subject matter. Highly proficient at rendering imaginary scenes with little or no reference
Submission release form needs to be completed before portfolio/reel can be reviewed
Developed “eye” and strong aesthetic
Clear understanding of anatomy and motion of organic and mechanical forms.
Demonstrated understanding and creation of photo real work
Experience creating environments, hard surface, and creature design
Ability to work closely with CG leadership and within a production environment
Ability to support different productions with various design needs
Ability to work under pressure while implementing changes based on input from multiple sources
Excellent organizational skills.

Set experience preferred

Knowledge of Macintosh computer systems including word processing, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop
Proficiency in design software required (Photoshop, Painter, Sketch-up, Modo, etc.)
Ability to assemble research and reference material that will be influential to clients and design team

3D Generalist Artist

Job Description

The 3d Generalist demonstrates a strong base of knowledge in 3d Computer Generated Imagery Creation. Successful candidates will display a high degree of proficiency in some and a varied skill level across most of the areas of model, texture, shading/look development, basic hard surface animation and FX simulation as well as the ability to composite their own work. The 3D Generalist will work both individually and within a team, with tasks ranging from completing everything on a small number of shots to working on specific tasks within a larger body of work.
Successful candidates can model, texture, shade, light, look development and composite CG images or shots, however candidates will be considered if they demonstrate themselves to be exceptional in only one area, as long as they have some experience in all others and are willing to learn.
Uses artistic and technical skills to work on all aspects of CG images or shots.
Creates high quality computer graphics within a shot using a variety of software programs, and working under the general supervision of Senior Level Artists and Digimatte Supervisors.
Participates as a team member in determining various aesthetic solutions; provides feedback to other members of the production by attending dailies on a regular basis.
Expected to mentor Apprentice and Jr. Artists and must be able to assist them with their shots.
Work to meet defined milestones within a timeline.
Source suitable reference materials for required assets.
Attend dailies and participate in creative problem solving.

Requirements

Education / Experience:

– Degree or 3-5 years relevant experience (professional OR amateur) in one or more of the following fields: Computer Graphics, Fine Arts, Design or Photography

Required Skills / Competencies:

– Proven ability in one or more CG techniques, including modeling, texturing, shading, lighting, look development, or compositing
OR
– Proven artistic ability in a non-CG field (impressive portfolio of figure drawing, landscape, animals, painting, composition, perspective, etc.)

– High level of problem solving or creative thinking skills

Technical Skills:

– Fluent in Photoshop
– Fluent in 3dsmax, Maya or similar
– Fluent in Vray or MRay or similar ray trace renderer
– Comparable software experience considered

Job Description

The compositor combines live action and computer generated elements into visual effects shots that realize the vision and creative direction of the client and Visual Effects Supervisor. The compositor is ultimately responsible for the aesthetic integrity and technical quality of the final image delivered to the client.
Together with the Compositing Supervisor and Visual Effects Supervisor, evaluate the creative and technical approach for assigned shots.
Perform all tasks associated with the compositing process, including 2D tracking, matte extraction, layering of elements, and color grading on moderately difficult to difficult shots.
Maintain the overall look, color balance, and quality for assigned shots and sequences to create uniformity in all finished work.
Ability to work collaboratively with artists from other disciplines.

Requirements

Education / Experience:

• BA in Computer Graphics or equivalent experience
• Minimum of 3 yrs of compositing experience in a feature film or commercial production environment

Required Skills / Competencies:

• Ability to work gracefully under pressure to meet deadlines

Preferred Skills / Competencies:

• Ability to write Nuke gizmos and/or plugins is a plus
• Python and/or C++ experience a plus

Technical Skills:

• Strong knowledge of Nuke
• Strong aesthetic skills in judging photo-realism and color
• Strong sense of composition, color and design
• Ideal candidate has strong fine arts foundation skills, such as photography and photographic lighting
• Familiarity with using Unix systems

FX Technical Director

Job Description

The Effects TD generates FX animation, procedural simulation, dynamic simulation, particle and fluid systems for feature film visual effects. They are responsible for lighting, rendering and moderate-level compositing of complex shots with guidance from their supervisors.
Designs and creates FX animation, procedural simulation, dynamic simulation, particle and fluid systems.
Light complex/multiple creatures (hairy or furry creatures) and elements.
Can set-up and wrangle heavy particle effects and enormous crowd shots.
Excellent pipeline scripting ability.
Solid compositing ability, can wrangle blue-screen extractions, working knowledge of Nuke.
Can write plug-ins, debug simulations and write set up and surface shaders with proficiency.
Can write/hack procedural surface shaders and volumetric shaders with proficiency.
Can animate moderate objects with proficiency.
Can pick-up new techniques quickly and easily and can debug just about anything.
Sets a standard for all Technical Directors in continually raising the bar for speed, quality of work and adaptability
Requirements Education / Experience:
– 3-5+ years production experience or feature film experience with effects simulation work
– Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or computer graphics
– Demo reel required

Required Skills / Competencies:

– Ability to work with competency, energy and enthusiasm within a team environment with minimal supervision to complete a shot.
– Exhibits excellent listening and communication skills, able to receive direction and criticism
– Excellent presentation/communication skills in dailies/shot review by clearly and briefly outlining what has been accomplished and what next should be addressed in the shot

Requirements

3-5+ years production experience or feature film experience with effects simulation work preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or computer graphics.
Advanced simulation experience with either Houdini, Maya, XSI, 3DS Max or other software, and ability to write expressions or authoring of shaders are required.
Linux and scripting ability in Python preferred, and experience in MEL highly desired; C++ skills also applicable.

Knowledge of simulation techniques for hair, flesh, cloth, rigid bodies in 3D software packages a plus.
