Job Description

Industrial Light & Magic are looking for a Pipeline TD to join our team in London to create the next generation of performance capture technology. Our development group will be collaborating with partners in the research and hardware sectors to produce scalable real-time capture and retargeting systems with a focus on computer vision, simulation and animation.
Our goal is to expand and enhance the process of creative storytelling in the Star Wars universe through real-time rendering of visuals that approach motion picture quality. This is an opportunity to innovate at the cutting-edge of film production technology.
The Pipeline TD will be engaged in a broad range of activities across the project. They will need strong programming and problem solving skills to tackle the differing challenges. They will be tasked with developing new methodologies, refactoring existing frameworks, troubleshooting operational issues and more. The Pipeline TD will need to work closely with the R&D Programmers to debug, maintain and expand the code base. The role will also require a large degree of overlap with the artists on the project as they apply the new technology to create content.

Responsibilities

• Efficiently and effectively creating a streamlined workflows for the artists to utilize performance capture data
• Creation of pipeline tools to efficiently deal with transfer of data from the performance capture to the downstream departments of the pipeline
• Extend and create solutions for real-time review of performance capture.
• Provide deep domain expertise in facial/body capture and virtual production.
• Plan and manage tasks and schedules effectively.
• Collaborate with the other team members on the project.

Requirements

Required Skills:

• Computing, Physics or Engineering degree
• Excellent C++ and Python skills.
• Extensive experience with relevant DCC systems eg. Houdini, Maya, MotionBuilder.
• Excellent understanding of the relevant technologies.
• Extensive experience building pipeline tools within a VFX studio
• Extensive knowledge of VFX workflow, terminology & technology
• Experience with animation systems, rigging solvers and cloth/hair/muscle simulations.

Preferred Experience:

• Interest in performance capture or experience with motion capture technologies and real time hardware
• Experience of developing solutions for real-time environments.

The R&D Lead Programmer will oversee the code line, be focused on engineering the improved system components into our code base, integrating the algorithmic improvements and applying a strong programmatic focus on delivering real-time results at an exceptional quality. The role will involve coordinating the efforts of the R&D Lead Programmer and providing direction for the R&D TD’s for problem solving and coding duties. The R&D Lead Programmer will liaise with the management group and above all work with the overall team to prototype our advanced techniques.

Responsibilities

• Investigate, prototype, and implement solutions that will deliver excellent performance capture results in a robust real-time context.
• Understanding of the Creative ambition of the project, in order to deliver the necessary tools to fulfill the vision.
• Take responsibility for the design and implementation of the code base.
• Extend and create solutions for real-time review of performance capture.
• Liaise and collaborate with the other team members on the project, including internal artists, external partners and the Project Leader

Requirements

Required Skills

• Computing, Physics or Engineering degree
• Extensive knowledge of Python, C++; broad knowledge of other programming languages
• Experience with Maya API (Motionbuilder API experience a plus)
• Experience with GPU Programming
• Willingness to embrace new technologies
• Excellent understanding of the relevant technologies, in particular knowledge of Unreal
• Proactive in problem identification and in developing & delivering solutions
• Proven experience of developing solutions for real-time environments.
• Significant and appropriate experience in VFX, games or similar areas.

Preferred Experience

• Previous experience as a Lighting artist
• Experience with parallel execution environments.
• Experience with hardware engineering.
• Experience with animation systems, rigging solvers and cloth/hair/muscle simulations.
• Experience with motion capture systems and / software
• Experience developing pipelines to work with motion capture
• Understanding of SCRUM, Lean or other Agile methodologies
