Laika CG Concept/Storyboard Designer Internship – Fall 2013

LAIKA/house, located in Portland, Oregon, is an eclectic team of passionate artists focused on crafting memorable content using all mediums of animation (CG, 2D and stop motion), live action integration and visual effects. Expert storytellers, our studio directors and designers work with global advertising agencies to spark life into branded characters and evolve their worlds into tangible or digital reality. If you’ve watched prime-time TV or spent any time online in the past 30 years, you’ve seen our successful collaborations with clients including Apple, Coca-Cola, ESPN, M&M’S, SPAM, Honda, Planters and Frito Lay.
LAIKA/house’s Concept Artist Intern will gain valuable hands-on production experience and training by working 40 hours a week in collaboration with our skilled professionals. Interns are supported and challenged as they benefit from over 35 years of renowned expertise dedicated to breakthrough animation.
Essential Job Functions
Conceive, execute and clearly communicate design ideas via digital and/or traditional techniques.
Assist in contributing to the development of story and visual ideas.
Work with Directors to visually analyze and translate scripts, creating thumbnail sketches through to finished detailed storyboard panels.
Collaborate with storyboard artists, character designers, and others to develop designs and look.
Take designs from thumbnail sketch to finished detailed artwork, incorporating Director’s notes.
Work to develop visual ideas for multiple types and styles of projects.
Help to perform background research to inform the story process.
Good problem solving skills.
Communicate effectively with production management, creative leads and technical support teams.
Meet deadlines as established by production management.
Actively safeguards LAIKA’s Proprietary and Confidential Information.
Completed his or her Junior year, or has graduated within the last two years with a Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Film, Fine Art or Computer Science or other relevant area of study.
Excellent illustration skills, including perspective and technical drawing and storyboarding preferred.
Good sense of color, with an eye for perspective, composition and lighting.
Working knowledge of Photoshop.
Experience with the Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet a plus.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
Open to taking direction and able to embrace change.
Exhibit a strong attention to detail, communication skills, a great attitude, and work ethic.
