General Summary

LAIKA/house’s Stop Motion Art Intern will gain valuable hands-on production experience and training by working 40 hours a week with our skilled professionals, who are renowned for their stop-motion animation expertise. The Stop Motion Art Intern will work with artists who design, paint, fabricate and construct sets, models, and props.

Essential Job Functions

Under supervision of the Director and Fabrication Artists, help build sets, models and props in our fabrication shops.
Under supervision of the Director, DP and Lead Wrangler, help load-in and dress sets on our stages.
Troubleshoot creative and construction issues.
Good problem-solving skills.
Communicate effectively with production management, creative leads and technical support teams.
Meet deadlines as established by production management.
Assist the art department in day-to-day production operations, including general organization and upkeep of the shops and work areas.
Adhere to rigorous safety standards.
Actively safeguard LAIKA’s Proprietary and Confidential Information.

Qualifications

Completed Junior year or has graduated within the last two years with a Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Film, Fine Art, Computer Science or other relevant area of study.
Good sense of color, with an eye for perspective, composition and lighting.
Ability to design and create both sets and elements for miniature filming using a variety of physical materials and tools including wood shop equipment, foam-carving, casting and painting.
Working knowledge of Photoshop and SketchUp.
Experience working on-set with shoot crews.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
Open to taking direction and able to embrace change.

Able to provide visually creative solutions to Directors.
Help to combine live action, stage, and cg elements into visual effects shots that realize the Director’s vision and the creative direction.
Able to assist on creative look development using compositing tools.
Work to develop visual ideas for a diverse range of projects.
Good problem solving skills.
Communicate effectively with production management, creative leads and technical support teams.
Meet deadlines as established by production management.
Actively safeguards LAIKA’s Proprietary and Confidential Information.

Qualifications

Completed Junior year or has graduated within the last two years with a Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Film, Fine Art or Computer Science or other relevant area of study.
Strong design skills.
Ability to work directly with directors, producers, editors, and animators to solve complex compositing issues.
Extensive knowledge of current compositing, editing and/or paintbox systems such as After Effects, Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop and Nuke.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
Open to taking direction and able to embrace change.

Assist in contributing to the development of story and visual ideas.
Work with Directors to visually analyze and translate scripts, creating thumbnail sketches through to finished detailed storyboard panels.
Collaborate with storyboard artists, character designers, and others to develop designs and look.
Take designs from thumbnail sketch to finished detailed artwork, incorporating Director’s notes.
Work to develop visual ideas for multiple types and styles of projects.
Help to perform background research to inform the story process.
Good problem solving skills.
Communicate effectively with production management, creative leads and technical support teams.
Meet deadlines as established by production management.

Qualifications

Good sense of color, with an eye for perspective, composition and lighting.
Working knowledge of Photoshop.
Experience with the Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet a plus.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.

Communicate effectively with production management, creative leads and technical support teams.
Meet deadlines as established by production management.

Qualifications

Completed Junior year or has graduated within the last two years with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Animation, Fine Arts or other relevant area of study.
Strong Photoshop skills preferred.
Experience with Maya, Arnold, Mental Ray and Nuke preferred.
Working knowledge of ZBrush, Mari, Xbrush and/or Bodypaint, Texture Artist or Digital Painter is a plus.
Experience in advanced surface types, global illumination and subsurfacing scattering a plus.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.

Partner with Modeling, Animation, Lighting, and FX Artists to troubleshoot creative and technical issues.
Creates and supports interfaces, controls mechanisms and tools for animation.
Integrates characters and rigs into the production pipeline.
Assists with designs and implements new tools and techniques for the rigging department.
Good problem solving skills.
Communicate effectively with production management, creative leads and technical support teams.

Qualifications

Completed Junior year or has graduated within the last two years with a Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Film, Fine Art, Computer Science or other relevant area of study.
Experience with CG and/or Visual Effects or equivalent rigging experience required.
Knowledge of Maya required.
Knowledge of Mel and Python preferred.
Experience rigging a variety of characters and props such as humans, winged, creatures, and facial animation systems.
Knowledge of character kinematics, dynamics, deformation and biomechanics a plus.
Basic modeling skills and ability to understand polygonal mesh flow preferred.

Background in visual arts/design with a good understanding of form, geometry
Knowledge of Maya API Development in C++ or Python a plus.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
