General Summary

LAIKA’s Art Fabrication Intern will gain valuable “hands on” production experience and training by working 40 hours a week in collaboration with our skilled professionals. Interns are supported and challenged as they benefit from renowned stop-motion animation expertise. Specifically, the Art Intern will work with artists who design, paint, fabricate and construct sets, models, and props.

Essential Job Functions

Assist the art department in day-to-day production operations.
Assist in general organization and upkeep of the shops and work areas.
Perform repetitive duties such as priming and rolling canvasses, filling paint cans, and working with a variety of raw materials.
Meet established deadlines.
Adhere to rigorous safety standards.
Actively safeguard LAIKA’s Proprietary and Confidential Information.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in college with an emphasis in Animation, Film, Fine Arts or other relevant area of study.
Willingness to listen, learn and do.
Skills in working with raw materials.
Good problem solving skills.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
Open to taking direction and able to embrace change.
Exhibit a strong attention to detail, communication skills, a great attitude, and work ethic.

Specifically, the Stop-Motion Animation Intern will work with artists to make puppets come to life, define personality and emotion, and create visually stunning animation.

Work closely with stop-motion animators to experience LAIKA’s world-class quality animation standards and innovation.
Opportunity to work on test stages and create animation sequences or shots using performance puppets.
Perform repetitive finely detailed tasks with precision for extended periods of time.

Specifically, the Puppet Intern will work with artists who cast puppet parts from production molds, paint performance puppets, design and manufacture puppet hair and fur, construct armatures, and design and fabricate costumes.

General Summary

The Facial Animator/Track Reader Internassists the Facial Animator in creatingthe full animation of the characters’ faces, and helps to analyze the audio to create realistic lip sync. He/she will gain valuable hands-on production experience and training by working 40 hours a week in collaboration with our skilled professionals.

Essential Job Function

Reads and breaks down dialog tracks and plan shots.
Helps to prepares exposure sheets and quick-times for animators, and for the editorial department.
Works closely with the facial animators, to help create quality facial animation.
Revises animation quickly and efficiently during daily reviews with animators and the facial animation supervisor.
Reviews sequences with the Facial Animator and stays abreast of all changes in dialog and actions
Has intimate knowledge of all face shapes in order to effectively match the directors’ performance requests.
Analyzes the story reel and audio file for individual shots in the film to create realistic facial performances including overall acting and detailed lip sync.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in college with an emphasis in Fine Arts, Commercial Arts, Computer Science, Animation or other relevant area of study.
Understanding of traditional animation principles.
Ability to bring characters to life.
Stop Motion animation experience a plus.
Working knowledge of Maya preferred.

Develop, create and/or utilize reference photography source material to generate photo-realistic surface textures for use in a cg environment.
Create and maintain texture and displacement maps for character, prop and set assets for integration within a scene.
Collaborate with Modeling, Look Development and Lighting TDs to ensure surface texture and displacement maps render properly, and to troubleshoot and resolve creative and technical issues.
Good problem solving skills.
Communicate effectively with production management, creative leads and technical support teams.
Meet deadlines as established by production management.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in college with an emphasis in Fine Arts, Computer Science, Animation or other relevant area of study.

Experience working with advanced surface types, and comfortable with a variety of rendering environments, such as RenderMan and/or Maya.
Experience working with Modeling and Shaders, a plus.
Traditional painting skills and familiarity with digital matte painting techniques preferred.

General Summary

LAIKA/Entertainment’s CG Rigging Intern works closely with the CG Animators to primarily create facial rigs, in a script build environment, in order to maintain a cohesive organic look during the animation process and through to the 3D printing process. He/she will gain valuable hands-on production experience and training by working 40 hours a week in collaboration with our skilled professionals.

Essential Job Functions

Under the supervision of the Rigging Lead, builds and finalizes model rigging to support the visual of the Director.
Creates and supports interfaces, control mechanisms and tools for receiving departments as assigned by the Rigging Supervisor and RPD Leadership.
Designs and implements new scripts, tools, and techniques for the Rigging department as well as specific RPD requirements to aid in future development.
Collaborates with Modelers, Texture Artists, and Animators to troubleshoot creative and technical issues.
Creates and supports interfaces, controls mechanisms and tools for animation.
Integrates characters and rigs into the production pipeline.
Communicates effectively with Production Management, Creative Leads and Technical Support teams.
Meets deadlines as established by Production Management and RP Leadership.
Actively safeguards LAIKA’s Proprietary and Confidential Information.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in college with an emphasis in Animation, Film, Fine Art or other relevant area of study.
Experience with CG and/or Visual Effects or equivalent rigging experience required in an academic and/or internship environment.
Knowledge of Maya, Mel and Python preferred.
Experience rigging a variety of facial animation systems and a variety of characters and props, such as humans and winged creatures.
Background in visual arts/design with a strong understanding of form, geometry and movement.
Knowledge of dynamics, Linux experience and Maya C++ plug in development, all a plus.
3D printing experience a plus.
Knowledge of character kinematics, dynamics, deformation and biomechanics a plus.
Basic modeling skills and ability to understand polygonal mesh flow preferred.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
Good problem solving skills.
Open to taking direction and able to embrace change.

Qualifications

Demonstrates ability using Maya for the creation of both hard surface and organic models, as well as UV Layout.
Knowledge of polygonal, NURBs and subdivision surface types.
Life drawing and sculpting experience a plus.
Experience with Nuke and Photoshop, a plus.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
