CG Modeling Intern – Summer 2013

Job Description

PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIP

General Summary

LAIKA/Entertainment’s CG Modeling Intern assists in creating and maintaining character assets, registration and props that support the artistic goals and story concepts of the production. He/she will gain valuable hands-on production experience and training by working 40 hours a week in collaboration with our skilled professionals.

Essential Job Functions

Under the supervision of the modeling lead, create and maintain 3D models from art designs, photographic reference images and/or scanned maquettes.
Collaborate with Texture Artists, Riggers and Animators to ensure models maintain structural integrity.
Communicate effectively with Production Management, Creative Leads and technical support teams.
Meet deadlines as established by RP Leadership and Production Management.
Actively safeguards LAIKA’s Proprietary and Confidential Information.
Assist CG modelers, CG Sup and Fabrication Leads in maintaining all CG Assets.
Work with CG modelers and Fabrication Leads in adjusting registration, eye rigs, and other character deliverables and prepping parts for printing.
Ensure all deliverables are properly published and meet pipeline requirements.

Qualifications

Completed his/her Junior year, or has graduated within the last two years, with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Commercial Arts, Computer Science, Animation or other relevant area of study and/or equivalent job experience.
Experience with Maya, ZBrush, Mari preferred.
Demonstrates ability using Maya for the creation of both hard surface and organic models, as well as UV Layout.
Knowledge of polygonal and subdivision surface types.
Life drawing and sculpting experience a plus.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
Open to taking direction and able to address changes in a timely manner.
Exhibit a strong attention to detail, communication skills, positive attitude and work ethic.
An understanding and experience in the creation and use of geometry assets in a production setting.
Experience with 3D printers and mechanical engineering a plus.
Experience with Nuke, Photoshop, Illustrator, Inventor, TogoGun and/or Softimage, a plus.
Good problem solving skills.

CG Rigging Intern – Summer 2013

Job Description

PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIP

General Summary

LAIKA/Entertainment’s CG Rigging Intern works closely with the CG Animators to primarily create facial rigs, in a script build environment, in order to maintain a cohesive organic look during the animation process and through to the 3D printing process. He/she will gain valuable hands-on production experience and training by working 40 hours a week in collaboration with our skilled professionals.

Essential Job Functions

Under the supervision of the Rigging Lead, builds and finalizes model rigging to support the visual of the Director.
Creates and supports interfaces, control mechanisms and tools for receiving departments as assigned by the Rigging Supervisor and RPD Leadership.
Designs and implements new scripts, tools, and techniques for the Rigging department as well as specific RPD requirements to aid in future development.
Collaborates with Modelers, Texture Artists, and Animators to troubleshoot creative and technical issues.
Creates and supports interfaces, controls mechanisms and tools for animation.
Integrates characters and rigs into the production pipeline.
Communicates effectively with Production Management, Creative Leads and Technical Support teams.
Meets deadlines as established by Production Management and RP Leadership.
Actively safeguards LAIKA’s Proprietary and Confidential Information.

Qualifications

Completed his or her Junior year, or has graduated within the last two years with a Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Film, Fine Art or other relevant area of study.
Experience with CG and/or Visual Effects or equivalent rigging experience required in an academic and/or internship environment.
Knowledge of Maya, Mel and Python preferred.
Experience rigging a variety of facial animation systems and a variety of characters and props, such as humans and winged creatures.
Background in visual arts/design with a strong understanding of form, geometry and movement.
Knowledge of dynamics, Linux experience and Maya C++ plug in development, all a plus.
3D printing experience a plus.
Knowledge of character kinematics, dynamics, deformation and biomechanics a plus.
Basic modeling skills and ability to understand polygonal mesh flow preferred.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
Good problem solving skills.
Open to taking direction and able to embrace change.
Exhibit strong attention to detail, communication skills, a great attitude, and work ethic.

Stop Motion Animation Rigging Intern – Summer 2013

LAIKA’s Stop Motion Animation Rigging Intern will gain valuable “hands on” production experience and training by working 40 hours a week in collaboration with our skilled professionals. Interns are supported and challenged as they benefit from over 35 years of renowned expertise dedicated to breakthrough animation.

Essential Job Functions

Under the supervision of the Rigging Supervisor, you will be responsible for:

Puppetry: Build the apparatus of exoskeletal moving puppets.
Engineering: Assist with the flow of animation by building technically sound and innovative apparatuses.
Film Making Protocol: You’ll be on the floor/stage assisting with set dressers and camera.
Assisting with designs and implementing new tools and techniques for the Rigging Department.
Innovative problem solving skills.
Communicating effectively with production management, creative leads and technical support teams.
Meet deadlines as established by production management.
Actively safeguarding LAIKA’s Proprietary and Confidential Information.

Qualifications

Completed his or her Junior year, or has graduated within the last two years with a Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Engineering, Film, Fine Art or other relevant area of study.
Some level of engineering or machining background.
Current experience with engineering software, Inventor, CAD or Rhinoceros software.
Experience rigging a variety of characters and props such as humans, winged creatures, etc.
Knowledge of character kinematics, dynamics, deformation and bio-mechanics a plus.
Background in visual arts/design with a good understanding of form, geometry.
Able to work both collaboratively and independently.
Open to taking direction and able to embrace change.
Exhibit a strong attention to detail, communication skills, a great attitude, and work ethic.
