Senior Texture Artist

Method Studios Vancouver is seeking a HIGH-END, Senior Texture Artist to join us for a feature film project to work on close-up, hero creature assets with realistic skin and hair textures.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Model or Texture Lead and to the CG Supervisor (per project), the Texture Artist will create textures as assigned by the CG Supervisor. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement.

Duties

Create textures as assigned by Supervisor.
Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
Ensure all working files are efficiently organized and that all work complies with Method’s technical standards and specifications.
Follow Supervisor directions, ensuring textures created are accurate and effective.
Fully comprehend the requirements of the designs thereby creating models true to their designs.
Create and modify textures by following the creative direction of the production.
Interact with production team in a positive manner and take direction and criticism in good humour
Report technical problems and potential problems to Supervisors in a timely fashion

Qualifications

3+ years Texturing experience on live action, feature film projects
Knowledge of industry-standard texture packages such as Mari, Zbrush, Mudbox, or 3D Coat.
Good knowledge of displacement map and normal map generation
Knowledge of Maya
Advanced Photoshop proficiency
Technical understanding of colour space
Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
Excellent team player.
Excellent file management skills.
Good communication skills

CG Supervisors

Method Studios Vancouver is looking forexperienced CG Supervisors for current and upcoming feature film projects.

The CG Supervisor will ensure the throughput of shots to completion via client approval, and maintain a functioning environment where the artists and client can focus on performance without technical hindrance. Responsibilities and Duties
working in conjunction with the VFX Supervisor, Producer, and Production Manager to develop a strong and flexible CG pipeline
working with the Project Coordinator and Producer to facilitate the scheduling of artists and resources
working with the VFX Supervisors to provide artistic and technical notes to the team
developing, maintaining, and/or approving 3D techniques
providing team-building by developing structure
leading artists, while delegating roles and responsibilities
following CG elements from concept through to final comp, overseeing all elements created by the CG team
conducting industry research and development
designing, executing, and managing high-level CG for use in final compositing through a team, reporting progress to the VFX Supervisor
may also be called upon to work “on the box” as the lead artist as show size and needs require

Qualifications

Visual targets and quality
addresses the body of work arriving from scanning. Previews for initial color-correction requirements and initial shot composite requirements
monitors shot continuity in all aspects of quality control, including final color-correction for timely delivery
Team Training
ensures leads are fluent with production techniques
defines crew training plans with leads
oversees training of new team members
conducts one-on-one training with team members
Team Guidance
facilitates production needs of every team member
guides and mentors team members
maintains team morale

R&D

tests new techniques and technology as necessary
helps leads and crew develop “one-off” techniques as necessary
Scheduling and daily work
makes shot deliveries with Producer and Coordinator
monitors resources, throughout each day, and delegates work priorities based on fluctuations in schedule and shot progress
oversees the management of the resource workload
monitors the render queue and reviews previous night logs for deviance on a daily basis
reviews progress of shots for film-out on a daily basis, and approves shots as ready for film-out when the criteria are met
assisting with notes and archives if necessary
Software knowledge
should have good working knowledge utilizing Maya, VRay, Houdini, and Mantra in a Linux environment
working knowledge of Massive, Mari, and Syntheyes a plus

Technical Animator

Method Studios Vancouver is looking for technical animators to join us on current feature film projects to start in January.

The role of the Technical Animator is designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair or other specialist technology. Working under the direction of the CG Supervisor the Technical Animator collaborates with other 3D Leads including Layout, Animation, Modeling, Rigging and any other appropriate discipline.

Duties and responsibilities

Work with Model department to ensure geometry being simulated meets Technical Animation needs
Work with Rigging and/or Layout department to ensure geometry or rigs delivered to Technical Animation meets needs
Apply and simulate clothing, hair or other areas requiring technical animation.
Fix any initial problems found and resimulate as needed.
Deliver simulated geometry to the production pipeline for further processing.
Ensure that geometry delivered to production pipeline meets each department’s needs
Develop techniques to ensure the requested animated geometry will integrate into a photorealistic environment.
Respond quickly to notes from the VFX/DFX or CG Supervisor(s) before or during dailies to ensure best possible quality is maintained.
Optimize simulations to ensure best throughput including automating pinning of geometry etc.
Other duties as appropriate to the role and determined by supervisors

Qualifications

Good working knowledge in production software such as Maya or Houdini
Good working knowledge of hair, fur, and cloth simulation software such as Yeti, Shave & a Haircut, and nCloth
At least 3 years experience as a rigger on high-end feature film productions
Character animation experience on high-end feature film productions.
Excellent problem solving and communication skills required
Excellent interpersonal skills with an emphasis on inspired leadership required
A strong sense of self-motivation and ability to work with little supervision required
Linux scripting experience, especially in Bash/Python, desirable

Houdini FX TDs

Method Studios Vancouver is looking for intermediate and senior Houdini FX TDs for current and upcoming feature film projects, through 2016.

Duties

– Design, create, and implement photo-real effects (water, dust, fire, smoke, explosions, debris, clouds, etc.) and systems that meet all technical and aesthetic standards for the project
– Work within the show structure and production deadlines to complete all tasks
– Integrate created elements into scenes with lighting, shadows, reflections, etc.
– Provide full spec for tool before development if spec not provided
– Document all developed technology
– Maintain a methodically clear system of data storage and retrieval
– Balancing the creative needs and the technical resources available
– Report regularly to the FX lead, VFX Supervisor and/or DFX Supervsior informing him/her of any concerns or new developments
– Follow the creative direction of the production communicated by the VFX Supervisor
– Ability to work in a dynamic team environment.
– Ability to work under tight deadlines
– Stays current with latest technologies

Qualifications

– MINIMUM 2 years experience as an FX TD; 5+ years for seniors and leads
– Degree in Animation, Arts, Fine Arts or equivalent production experience in feature film
– Strong knowledge of and proven ability to use Houdini to develop photo-real dynamics-based effects
– Experience with rigid body and particle dynamics, volume modeling and rendering, procedural geometry generation and fluid dynamics an asset
– Demonstrable ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
– Able to take directions and adaptable to change
– Good at improvising and problem-solving
– Requires strong technical knowledge and organizational skills
– Familiarity with one or more coding/scripting languages an asset (e.g. Python, Mel)
