VFX Supervisor

Description

The Visual Effects Supervisor is responsible for the design and execution of visual effects work on a given project. This can include both on set supervision for acquisition of plates and elements and supervision of the shot work through post production.
In conjunction with the Visual Effects Producer, the Visual Effects Supervisor is responsible for the management and successful completion of the project. The Supervisor’s input will be required for issues such as artist performance and team selection, liaising with the overall project supervisor, producer, or director as required, scheduling of effects production, and estimating/bidding new work.
The Visual Effects Supervisor will also play an important role in the sales efforts for new potential projects. This could include script reading and breakdown, project time/budget estimation, attending first contact meetings and conference calls with potential clients and being able to speak definitively and clearly about the studio’s abilities, resources and culture.

Duties:

VFX supervision as required (On set / In house through post)
Maintain creative relations with given clients; establish strong client confidence
Bid shots, flag overages On set/ through post
Outline show requirements involving team size, team strengths, & resources
Outline show pipeline procedure if unique to given show
Communicate show expectations with VFX artists
Communicate creative and technical input for shot design & completion with VFX
artists while maintaining Director’s vision and working within budget.
Communicate Director’s feedback
Supervise VFX artists as needed, in coordination with the VFX Producer for
given project
Oversee all aspects for body of FX shots throughout post from start to finish
Delegate appropriate tasks to applicable artists
Monitor shot tracker data
Update senior management to show status weekly

Rigging TD

Description

Working closely with the CG Supervisor and the Rigging Supervisor, the Rigger will be responsible for building robust and efficient rigs and working with the CG team to implement and support these rigs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

With the CG Supervisor, Rigging, Animation, and Modeling Leads, identify the production’s specific rigging needs
Design efficient rigs appropriate to the production’s needs
Advise modeling teams on suitability of models for rigging and any changes needed
Work with the CG team implementing the rigs and rigging the assets
Design and implement scripted solutions for maximum speed and efficiency of rigging
Work with leads and supervisors in the testing of rigged assets.
During production, support all the rigged assets.

Qualifications

Rigging knowledge in industry production software such as Maya or Houdini
Knowledge of other packages an asset, such as Motion Builder
Must have some experience as a rigger on high-end feature film productions
Excellent problem solving and communication skills required
Excellent interpersonal skills with an emphasis on inspired leadership required
A strong sense of self-motivation and ability to work with little supervision required
Linux scripting experience, especially in Bash/Python is desirable

This is a full-time, contract position requiring some overtime.

Animator

Description

The Animator is responsible for the design and execution of high-level animation as assigned, for use in final compositing as part of the daily work. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement. In addition, the Animator may serve as a key front-line representative of the company and who may deal directly with clients in challenging situations. Accordingly, a professional demeanor and diplomacy are important.

Duties include:

Work with the Animation Supervisor, Animation Lead and other animators, as well as Production staff to provide animated rendered sequences as required by the project
Animate in various styles (creatures, realistic humans, motion capture, vehicles, etc.) as required by projects
Work with animation software (Maya) for visual effects intensive projects
Investigate and keep up to date on new and competing software packages and technology
Test provided rigs and giving appropriate feedback
Work closely with other departments on issues that affect the animation team, and vice versa
Modeling, texturing and surfacing, choreography, lighting, match moving and final rendering of CG
elements if skills applicable, as needed
Other miscellaneous duties as required from time-to-time by the Animation Supervisor or Animation Lead
as needed

Qualifications:

Knowledge and work experience in Maya required
Minimum 2 years of experience in character and creature animation
Experience in live action animation (television or film) preferred
Additional animation software experience in other animation software an asset, especially in Houdini, XSI,
and MotionBuilder
Knowledge of rigging is an asset
Knowledge of Nuke is an asset
Knowledge of Shotgun is an asset
Knowledge of scripting (MEL, python) is an asset
Working knowledge of motion capture is an asset
This is a full-time position requiring overtime periodically.

Matte Painter

Description

The Digital Matte Painter works closely with the VFX Supervisor to realize the client’s vision. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgment. The Matte Painter is responsible for creating photoreal environments and landscapes, as well as creating elements and textures for matching into live action plates or standing as their own matte painting plates. They must also have a sound knowledge and understanding of visual effects pipelines, production and implementation, as well as the ability to work well in a team.

Duties

Create synthetic backgrounds and environments to match the overall look and needs of a given project based on concept art and/or photo reference
integrating matte paintings into 3D environments using Maya and/or Nuke
Contribute to the visual and technical attributes of productions
Assist in troubleshooting background components created
Consult with clients and other artists on the team as required

Qualifications

Minimum of 3 years experience as a digital matte painter in a production environment for live action projects, preferably on feature films
Expert knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
Experience with 3D Maya software and strong compositing and 3D projection skills in

Nuke

A good understanding of 2D and 3D workflows within a production environment
Knowledge of design, photography, and digital processes an asset
Ability to work under tight deadlines
Possess a strong understanding of light, colour and perspective
Possess excellent artistic communication skills, as well as an excellent eye for detail
Flexibility to produce concept art from scratch is a plus
Knowledge of Vue software is a plus

Look Development Artist

Description

Summary:

The Look Development Artist works with the Look Development Lead or Supervisor to define all the technical and creative aspects needed to create the appearance for CG assets for a particular project. The Look Development Artist should be able to use a variety of methods and renderers to satisfy a production’s creative needs.

Responsibilities:

Work with the show supervisors to create final looks, templates and materials for CG characters and environments to be used in production and interpret artistic direction from Supervisors.
Working with the lead of supervisor of a show, define shader requirements, creating shader networks in Maya and Houdini, modifying shader parameters, applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline.
Participate as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions; provides feedback to other team members of the production.
Setup scene templates for Lighters and run shots under guidance of Lighting Supervisor.
Work closely with texture artists to create necessary texture maps for application to creatures, props and environments
Work closely with grooming artists and technical animators to create fur, hair, or cloth rigs for application to creatures, props and environments
Write and/or modify custom shaders, define standard render passes for a project
Work closely with Lead Lighting TD’s and supervisors to ensure that all assets work within the scope of lighting & color pipeline requirements.
Work with a team of artists in a hands-on capacity to ensure technically and artistically proper implementation of look developed assets
Keep other supervisors apprised of issues arising in pre-production and shot production and offer creative solutions to those issues.

Qualifications:

3+ years production experience in feature film VFX, 5+ years preferred.
Experience in photo-real material/surfacing look development in visual effects production.
Experience in shot lighting and finaling.
Experience with fur and hair grooming and cloth simulation
Superior eye for light, shade, color, and detail in creating photo-real shaders and materials.
A passion for highly detailed work on a mix of characters, hard-surface assets and environments.
Able to create photorealistic textures from reference and clean UV layouts
Ability to balance quick turnaround with achieving a high degree of aesthetic quality.
Be willing to share knowledge and experience with others
Must possess strong initiative, excellent communication, time management and problem-solving skills.
Must be able to work in a collaborative environment, taking direction positively from the Leads and Supervisors while keeping production staff updated on progress and scheduling conflicts.
Must have advanced experience with Autodesk Maya, Mental Ray, Adobe Photoshop and a variety of rendering technologies.
Must have experience modifying shading network GUI’s and defining templates for other artists.
Familiarity with zBrush, Mudbox, Crazy Bump, Mari or other texture and normal/displacement map generation is a plus.
Experience with Maya hair, Yeti, Shave and a Haircut, and nCloth an asset
Possess familiarity with asset management systems and procedures.
Experience with shader programming for Mental Ray and / or Renderman (RSL, Slim templates, etc.) and scripting/programming languages (python, MEL, PERL, C, C++) is a plus.
Linux experience preferred
TriPlanar and camera projection experience a plus

Pipeline Supervisor

Description

Reporting to the Head of Software, the Pipeline Supervisor is responsible to lead the pipeline team to design, produce, and maintain processes and tools which ensure efficient and continuing operation of visual effects and commercial pipelines at Method Studios. The goal is to improve efficiency and quality for all segments of the studio and to make sure the team functions at peak efficiency.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Direct development resources to build software systems and tools to support production.
Collaborate with the Head of Software and Production Teams to prioritize development goals.
Work with the Project Manager to track development progress while setting expectations and status to productions.
Collaborate with Management to ensure adequate staffing levels.
Promote a positive, productive, and open work environment.
Strive to continually improve pipeline development and organizational standards.
Work to understand existing pipeline tools and processes.
Confirm that pipeline projects match required standards of functionality, documentation, and communication.
Address the needs of a multi-location, global workflow and dialogue with staff in different locations and time zones.

Qualifications:

BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Engineering, or equivalent.
Minimum 5 years experience in film industry, ideally with previous experience in post-production, VFX, and CG.
Comprehensive working knowledge of multiple 2D and 3D software packages.
Proficiency in Python.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Senior Texture TD

Description

Reporting to the Model or Texture Lead and to the CG Supervisor (per project), the Senior Texture Artist will create photoreal textures as assigned by the CG Supervisor. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement for close-up, hero, creature assets with photorealistic skin and hair textures.

Duties:

Create textures as assigned by Supervisor
Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
Ensure all working files are efficiently organized and that all work complies with Method’s technical standards and specifications
Follow Supervisor directions, ensuring textures created are accurate and effective
Fully comprehend the requirements of the designs thereby creating models true to their designs
Create and modify textures by following the creative direction of the production
Interact with production team in a positive manner and take direction and criticism in good humour
Report technical problems and potential problems to Supervisors in a timely fashion

Qualifications:

5+ years Texturing experience on live action, feature film projects, especially on photoreal, hero creature assets
Knowledge of industry-standard texture packages such as Mari, Zbrush, Mudbox, or 3D Coat
Good knowledge of displacement map and normal map generation
Knowledge of Maya
Advanced Photoshop proficiency
Technical understanding of colour space
Ability to multi-task and prioritize

Technical Animator

Description

Method Studios Vancouver is looking for technical animators specializing in cloth, hair, and fur, to join us on current feature film projects.
The role of the Technical Animator is designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair or other specialist technology. Working under the direction of the CG Supervisor the Technical Animator collaborates with other 3D Leads including Layout, Animation, Modeling, Rigging and any other appropriate discipline.

Duties and responsibilities

Work with Model department to ensure geometry being simulated meets Technical Animation needs
Work with Rigging and/or Layout department to ensure geometry or rigs delivered to Technical Animation meets needs
Apply and simulate clothing, hair or other areas requiring technical animation.
Analyze and fix any initial problems found and resimulate as needed.
Fix geometry on character animation on a shot basis using our in-house tool set
Deliver simulated geometry to the production pipeline for further processing.
Ensure that geometry delivered to production pipeline meets each department’s needs
Develop techniques to ensure the requested animated geometry will integrate into a photorealistic environment.
Respond quickly to notes from the VFX/DFX or CG Supervisor(s) before or during dailies to ensure best possible quality is maintained.
Optimize simulations to ensure best throughput including automating pinning of geometry etc.
Other duties as appropriate to the role and determined by supervisors

Qualifications

Good working knowledge in a production environment with Maya.
Houdini knowledge a plus
