Compositor

Department: VFX

About the Position

The compositor seamlessly integrates all the layers or elements of a shot. The compositor works closely with the VFX supervisor to composite the numerous elements that complete CG shots. The compositor excels at creating high-calibre, dynamic and riveting comps, while at the same time meeting production deadlines. They must be able to make artistic judgments and practical decisions, and be able to effectively communicate with the animation director, team supervisor and art director.

Responsibilities

Report regularly to the VFX lead informing him/her of any concerns or new developments
Identify to the VFX lead problems that could potentially present with respect to timelines and delivery schedules
Respect and adapt to the Nerd Corps system of data storage and retrieval through the use of the in-house software
Make sure that all work done is accounted for and entered in the tracking system (SPARCX)
Act as a resource to animators for layout/lighting/background questions
Help director watch for render errors/missing composite elements, such as gel layers, missing glows, etc.
Communicate to animators about elements that may be needed or used for their sequences
Watch animatics of his/her episode for errors and shots missing composites; stay current with the show and what stage of production it is at
Balance his/her creative needs, technical resources and time available
Composite shots for the show in a timely manner and try to get the most number of shots done in the time available while maintaining quality
Ensure the schedule is being followed and take a proactive approach with the director and VFX lead to ensure compositing shots are always in progress
Follow the creative direction of the production as communicated by the VFX lead
Work with the senior staff of the VFX team to learn as much as possible about the methods and software used when compositing

Qualifications:

Intermediate understanding of 3D texturing, modelling and lighting
Solid understanding of compositing methods
Solid knowledge of SoftImage XSI, in particular XSI Render Tree
Creative with timing and exceptional eye for colour
Works well within the team
Able to take directions and work independently
Able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
Able to multi-task and prioritize
Good at improvising and problem solving
Thrives in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment
Enjoys working in a team atmosphere
Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience an asset

Junior Compositor

The modeller creates characters, props and set models that accurately represent the artistic goals and story concepts of the production. They excel at creating complex and organic models while at the same time meeting production deadlines. They take direction well, require minimum supervision and are good communicators.

Responsibilities:

Create geometries and texturing for characters, sets, props and vehicles based on production designs
Develop models for multiple types of productions from simple to moderately difficult
Render images of the models he/she creates for approval and circulation
Complete all work assigned within the scheduled timeframe and in an efficient manner
Collaborate with animation team to ensure models are structured to achieve intended performance requirements
Interpret and implement notes and feedback from directors and supervisors in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way
Remain current in modelling and production techniques
Stay up-to-date on production related software
Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner

Qualifications:

3+ years of experience in television, or relevant industry experience
Degree/diploma in fine arts or 3D modelling
Proficiency in Maya, Photoshop, and either Zbrush or Mudbox
Understanding and experience in the creation and use of geometry assets in a production setting
Basic understanding of scripting and programming in Python or MEL a plus
Understanding of facial shape animation
Working knowledge of the Windows operating system
Good understanding of the animation process
Open and encourages feedback and new initiatives
Works well in a team environment

The rigger’s primary responsibility is to create highly versatile character rigging systems and animation interfaces. The rigs will be used for the animation of 3D characters and props.

Responsibilities:

Construct 3D character rigs and animation interfaces and controls for assigned characters and props
Troubleshoot and evaluate character-rigging issues for artists within various disciplines

Qualifications:

3+ years of experience in television or relevant industry experience
Proficiency in Maya
Comprehension of core principles relating to rigging such as deformation order and the transformation matrix
Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to character rigging and animation
Advanced knowledge of skeleton setup, skinning, constraints and enveloping
