Lead Previs Artist

About the Position

As the lead previs artist you work in collaboration with the director to define shooting style and lens packages. You establish camera blocking, lens choice and composition and work closely with other departments to ensure smooth transitions and improve tools and processes. You oversee the daily activities and processes of the previs team and assign them sequences as needed.

Responsibilities

In collaboration with the director, define shooting style and lens packages
Establish camera blocking, composition and lens choice
Improve shot flow and provide coverage options to director
Work collaboratively with rigging and modeling departments to ensure the transition of proxy builds for animation assets is accurate and efficient
Work with software department to refine or develop tools and seek to improve all processes
Assign sequences to previs team and manage progress
Lead previs team in execution of camera lensing and staging, composition and blocking of scenes from storyboard animatics
Ensure shot continuity
Anticipate, identify, communicate, and troubleshoot any creative or technical issues with assistance from key stakeholders
Complete assigned sequences within scheduled timeframe

Crew Management

Oversee the daily activities and capabilities of the previs team
Partner with management to guide artists’ overall professional development, providing performance feedback, mentoring, resolving performance issues and maintaining positive morale among the crew
Enable and foster cross-departmental communication and collaborative environment
Work with production team to identify appropriate staffing levels and needs
Foster a healthy and creative work environment

Qualifications

2+ years of experience as a previs artist
Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience an asset
Solid knowledge of Maya and/or XSI
Excellent knowledge of cinematic language and camera terminology
Basic modeling and rigging is an asset
Ability to interpret storyboards and realize them in a 3D environment
Firm understanding of cameras, staging, composition, perspective, pacing, timing and cinematography concepts in animation context
Excellent at communicating creative and technical thoughts and ideas in a positive, professional manner
Able to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently
Able to work alone and collaboratively, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure
Encourages feedback and new initiatives
Must be open to direction and able to embrace change

Junior Animator

As a junior animator you create high-calibre, dramatic and action-oriented character animation while at the same time meeting production deadlines. You have a good understanding of the principles of animation, movement and timing skills. You are integral to the animation team and are enthusiastic at developing your skills. Responsibilities

Strive to break the conventional animation limitations of 3D animated television series and create the highest possible quality of animation in this medium
Demonstrate the ability to take direction well and excel in a team environment
Work under the direction of the animation supervisor and animation director

Qualifications

Degree/diploma in 3D animation
6 months+ experience preferably with a background in episodic TV or feature animation
Broad understanding of 3D character animation
Solid knowledge of SoftImage XSI is beneficial
Strong understanding of character acting principles

VFX Supervisor

About the Position

As the VFX supervisor you will play an integral role in transitioning our VFX pipeline from XSI to Maya. You will construct creative solutions for recurring visual effects and create complex effects sequences. You will also train the VFX team on an ongoing basis and clearly communicate expectations.

Responsibilities

Work in collaboration with the pipeline supervisor and VFX department head in the creation of the Maya VFX pipeline
Create Maya effects rigs for all productions
Construct creative solutions for recurring visual effects in TV Production
Create complex effects sequences as assigned by the director
Create and deliver effects for the series in a timely manner
Revise and maintain show continuity list
Ensure that all production deadlines are met while providing work at a quality level in keeping with production requirements
Be aware of what is happening on the team at all times and identify obstacles or problems to the VFX department head
Identify to the VFX department head obstacles that could potentially affect the timelines and delivery schedules
Identify potential risks or issues and work on mitigation strategy
Anticipate, communicate, and troubleshoot any creative or technical issues with assistance from key stakeholders
Assist in the development of any specialized assets as needed
Work collaboratively as part of the senior production team
Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner

HR/Recruiting

Work with senior HR generalist on developing and updating job descriptions for the VFX team
Work with recruiter and HR/recruitment coordinator in reviewing selected reels and take part in the interview process

Crew Management

Assist in the transition from XSI to Maya
Train VFX team on an ongoing basis both technically and creatively
Communicate expectations to the VFX team while balancing creative desires with the requirements of production
Oversee the daily activities of the VFX team
Be aware of the capabilities of the VFX team
Partner with management to guide artists’ overall professional development by providing performance feedback, mentoring, assisting with resolving performance issues and maintaining positive morale amongst the crew
Foster and enable cross-departmental communication and a collaborative environment

Qualifications

3+ years of experience in the animation or film industry.
Excellent communication skills, organization and team awareness.
A strong understanding of 3D texturing, modelling and lighting in Maya
Advanced understanding of compositing
Advanced knowledge of particle systems in Maya
Creative with timing and color
Works well within a team environment and is able to take direction and work independently
Strong problem solving skills

Storyboard Revisionist

As a storyboard revisionist you make changes to completed storyboards upon receiving notes from the director.

Responsibilities

Handle storyboard revisions and animatic cut-ins as needed
May need to storyboard a section of the script based on the director’s notes and storyboard supervisor’s instruction.
Manage your time effectively and efficiently in order to complete the production on time
Communicate ideas effectively and recommend solutions to help interpret the script visually
Consult with supervising director to approve the final storyboard panels and make revisions as needed
Maximize the re-use when the production schedule calls for it
Overall, be aware of the show/series continuity

Qualifications

Preferably with one year storyboard experience
Excellent understanding of animation timing and posing
Familiarity with 3D animation and the strengths and weaknesses of CGI animation
Superior understanding of filmic storytelling principles and techniques
Deadline motivated
Critical thinking skills
Planning and management skills
Ability to communicate processes, plans and concepts

Senior FX Artist-Maya

About the Position As a senior FX artist you will play an integral role within our VFX team. You will create dynamic and riveting visual effects while at the same time meeting production schedule. You will follow the creative direction of the production from an effects standpoint and report regularly to the VFX supervisor informing them of any concerns or new developments.

Responsibilities

Work with VFX supervisors to determine the FX needs of the project
Collaborate with art, animation and modelling departments to develop various effects
Create complex effects sequences as assigned by the supervisor/director
Identify to the VFX supervisor problems that could potentially affect timelines and delivery schedules
Work with VFX supervisor to ensure effects adhere to the style and vision set out by the series director
Find a balance between creative needs and technical resources available
Work closely with the team to create balanced solutions to any related technical or aesthetic issues
Participate in VFX meetings and adjust/refine effects as indicated by series director and animation director
Actively participate in production-related meetings by offering thoughts and ideas
Train, mentor and motivate new FX artists who are placed on the crew
Assist/guide FX artists in the organization of their assignments
Be aware of what is happening on the team at all times and identify obstacles to the VFX supervisor

Qualifications

2-3 years of experience with Maya in animation or film industry

Recruiting

Be part of the recruiting process by assisting the HR department with the development of job descriptions, sourcing of candidates as well as being involved in the selection and orientation process

Crew Management

5+ years in art direction experience in animation or television world
BA/BFA degree in fine arts or commercial arts field an asset

Experience leading strategic brainstorming sessions, creative brief development and directing creative execution
Excellent communication skills (able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas)
