Art Director

About the Position

As the art director for Monster High, you will play a key role in controlling the overall visual direction of this billion dollar brand. That’s right—one billion dollars! Working closely with Mattel, you will create cutting-edge, appealing and fresh new looks for each Monster High show by infusing them with the latest trends in design, fashion, and pop culture. This is an exciting opportunity for an art director to be a driving force on one of the top girls’ brands in the world today.

Responsibilities

Establish and refine show style
Develop and oversee show specific style guide and communicate it to the design team
Ensure viability while maximizing artistic objectives
Collaborate with clients on designs that need special direction
Directly contribute to project design
Collaborate with VFX and modelling departments to ensure render style matches show art direction
Attend breakdown meetings and provide input from the art department’s point of view
Provide quality assurance of all creative deliverables
Provide detailed direction to design team
Elevate the creative level of products coming out of Nerd Corps
Proactively ensure that concepts, designs and desired outputs are obtained within the project timeline and budget
Identify possible solutions to a problem and select the best option
Identify actions necessary to achieve task completion and to obtain results while meeting schedules, deadlines and performance goals
Adapt traditional methods, concepts, models, designs, technologies or systems to new applications and devise new approaches to improve current processes and work flow

HR/Recruiting

Be part of the recruiting process by assisting the HR department with the development of job descriptions, sourcing of candidates as well as being involved in the selection and orientation process

Crew Management

Oversee the daily activities of the design team
Partner with management to guide artists’ overall professional development, provide performance feedback, mentor, assist with resolving performance issues and maintain positive morale amongst the team
Foster and enable cross-departmental communication and collaboration
Work with production team to identify appropriate staffing levels and needs
Demonstrate optimism and positive expectations of others
Set goals for others that can be achieved using available resources, and use previous measurable performance to establish goals within projected timeframe
Determine and understand the needs, interests, strengths and weaknesses of the design team and use this information to assist the growth and development of the design team
Provide constructive criticism, wisdom, guidance, and feedback that will help others further their career development

Qualifications

5+ years art direction experience in animation or television world
BA/BFA degree in fine arts or commercial arts field an asset
Understanding of the translation from 2D artwork to 3D models
Must have strong 3D design experience for animation
Must possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills
Experience leading strategic brainstorming sessions, creative brief development and creative execution
Excellent communication skills (able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas)
Experience in supervising and training, as well as leadership qualities

Production Manager

About the Position

As the show production manager you oversee all aspects of the production process including direct management of your crew. You work with the series director and art director to facilitate creative needs of the project while ensuring the show schedule stays on time and on budget. You report to the director of production resources on show status and crew performance.

Responsibilities

Ensure each episode is advancing as per pre-established timelines and be attuned to the inner workings of each of the departments
Review all script and animatic notes and make sure that the team is responding on time and balancing priorities
Monitor the flow of scripts and ensure that all scripts are clear of any legal issues and meet broadcast standards and practices
Work with production personnel and oversee that all components of the script are production viable
Work with coordinators and ensure that every asset is accounted for and being completed on time for production milestones
Monitor freelance progress in timely delivery of assets
Organize and attend casting sessions
Work with client and producer on the approval of the cast
Attend voice records and oversee the organization
Help establish and support career paths and aspirations of the crew
Directly oversee the daily activities/tasks of production coordinators
Monitor employee attendance and requests for vacation
Partake in employee performance and salary reviews
Terminate contracts, if necessary
Organize the show deliverables and ensure that every client receives everything required as per the production services agreement
Set up and supervise sound and music spotting sessions
Provide and obtain approval for all screen credits for each episode
Review quality control reports for broadcast

Qualifications

4+ years experience in production management or equivalent (experience in 3D animation an asset)
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Excellent interpersonal communication skills (both verbal and written)
Proactive to anticipate the needs of production
Great team player and demonstrated ability working with a diverse crew
Highly organized with an ability to multitask
Strong scheduling experience is a must
Thrive in a high pressure, deadline-oriented environment

Storyboard Revisionist

Storyboarding | Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

About the Position

As a storyboard revisionist you make changes to completed storyboards upon receiving notes from the director.

Responsibilities

Handle storyboard revisions and animatic cut-ins as needed
May need to storyboard a section of the script based on the director’s notes and storyboard supervisor’s instruction.
Manage your time effectively and efficiently in order to complete the production on time
Communicate ideas effectively and recommend solutions to help interpret the script visually
Consult with supervising director to approve the final storyboard panels and make revisions as needed
Maximize the re-use when the production schedule calls for it
Overall, be aware of the show/series continuity

Qualifications

Preferably with one year storyboard experience
Excellent understanding of animation timing and posing
Familiarity with 3D animation and the strengths and weaknesses of CGI animation
Superior understanding of filmic storytelling principles and techniques
Deadline motivated
Critical thinking skills
Planning and management skills
Ability to communicate processes, plans and concepts
Ability to create entertaining and persuasive messages
Ability to present specific viewpoints

Head of Visual Development

About the Position

As the Head of Visual Development, you will play a key role in managing the art direction and show style of some of the coolest new TV animation for kids. Your vision will guide creative that will be seen all over the world, and you will help push Nerd Corps to continually raise the creative bar. This is a challenging management role for an experienced art director looking to take their career to the next level by defining the early visual development of multiple exciting new kids’ shows, collaborating and strategizing with multiple departments—including Development, Interactive, Marketing and Production—to ensure their design needs are met, and hand-picking teams of the best-suited designers and art directors for each project. Your guidance will be key in turning talented artists into great art directors.

Responsibilities

Elevate the creative level of product coming out of Nerd Corps
Define art direction and show style in early development
Keep an eye on the health of the art direction for every production in terms of cohesion and consistency
Find suitable designers to execute the particular direction for each production, and produce concept designs when necessary
Develop and oversee mood boards and inspiration documents to support early concept work
Work with the department heads to strategize the methodology for the established art direction
Assist in selecting the show art director and effectively hand off the development work to them during pre-production
Oversee and support the art team during pre-production
Ensure viability while maximizing artistic objectives
Collaborate with clients, creators, production partners and executives on design work
Attend initial breakdown meetings during pre-pro and provide input on the art department’s point of view
Provide quality assurance on all creative deliverables
Proactively ensure that concepts, designs and desired output are obtained within the project timeline and budget

HR/ Recruiting

Work with senior HR generalist on developing and updating job descriptions for the design department.
Work with recruiter to ensure selected reels are reviewed, consult on the selection of candidates and ensure the design department is part of the interview process
Keep HR and recruiter informed of quality of a new hire’s performance
Participate in other HR/recruiting initiatives as necessary

Education

Oversee the development, maintenance and delivery of training and education curriculum for the design department
Ensure series supervisors, leads and mentors have appropriate materials and tools to train the design department on each production at launch

Crew Management

Ensure that the orientation and onboarding process of new hires is consistent across all shows
Collaborate with production management to determine appropriate design resource level for the shows and staff reassignment
Participate in performance review discussions with directors and PMs as requested
Suggest solutions for underperformers including additional remedial work, courses, probation or termination
Participate in conversations around stretch opportunities, mentorship readiness, courses, conferences, promotions and/or raises for individual artists
Participate in calibration process as necessary both within and across shows; know top and bottom 25% across shows at all times and provide suggestions for management of these people
Participate in career path conversations as necessary; provide feedback on performance review process to ensure it is providing value to the stakeholders
Meet with PMs and directors to ensure quality of new hires and determine further action, including whether to keep status quo, promote, extend probation to further evaluate, or terminate
Lead and facilitate crew meetings with leads across productions
Build trust with key stakeholders and crew
Demonstrate integrity, optimism and positive expectations of others
Monitor team morale level
Lead and supervise new initiatives to improve performance, communication and artistic quality (e.g., weekly team meetings)

Qualifications
