Intermediate Modeller/Rigger

Job Description

We are looking for an Intermediate Modeller/Rigger to join the team on our CGI animated theatrical feature film, Seth Rogen’s “Sausage Party”.

General Summary

A CG Modeler creates characters, props and set models that support the artistic goals and story concepts of the production.

Duties & Responsibilities

Create and maintain 3D models for use in production.
Work with Modeling Supervisor and Art Director to realize the aesthetic vision of the production.
Ensure all deliverables meet the needs of all receiving departments.
Meet deadlines as established by Production Management.

Skills & Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Commercial Arts, Engineering, Computer Science, Animation or other relevant area of study and/or equivalent job experience
3+ years of feature film or relevant industry experience (cg and/or Visual Effects)
Demonstrated ability using Maya for the creation of both hard surface and organic models
An understanding and experience in the creation and use of geometry assets in a production setting
Knowledge of polygonal and subdivision surface types
Life drawing and sculpting experience, a plus
Polygonal experience, a plus
ZBrush, Mudbox, Photoshop experience, a plus
Basic understanding of scripting and programming in Python, MEL a plus
knowledge of anatomy and perspective
Ability to accurately interpret 2D designs into 3D models
Full working knowledge of Maya rigging techniques
Good problem-solving ability
Good understanding of animation production for film
Good communication skills
Works well in a team-oriented environment.
Aware of developments in the animation and FX industries
Should be able to take critique and direction well
Able to help Junior modeler/riggers with difficulties
BC residents preferred, but not required

FX Lighting TD

Job Description

Position Overview:

The position of FX Lighting Technical Director works as a part of the team that helps create the look of the effects as per direction from the FX Supervisor and VFX-Supervisor. They need to use technical skill and aesthetic judgment in order to create images that are of high production quality on a consistent basis.

Duties & Responsibilities

Works with the FX supervisor to create final looks for effects to be used in production
Works with the FX supervisor and pipeline TDs to build tools to help automate developed lighting setups
Participates as a team member in determining solutions for technical problems during shot production

Skills & Requirements:

Full knowledge of Houdini and Mantra
Understanding Shading models
Knowledge of Python and Hscript with an ability to write code and assist in tool/pipeline R&D development
Strong experience in effects lighting and rendering
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
BC residents preferred but not required

Shader Writer (Mid-Senior)

Job Description

Position Overview:

The position of Shader Writer requires a thorough knowledge of RenderMan, ideally with several years of experience in a similar role. The Shader writer works with the Surfacing, Look Dev and Lighting Departments to help create and maintain an effective and efficient library of shaders for production. The ideal candidate must have the technical abilities required to write complex shaders and the artistic ability to understand and anticipate artist needs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Work with the Surfacing, Look Dev and Lighting departments to design and write RenderMan shaders to create desired looks for feature animation.
Participate as a team member in determining solutions for technical and artistic shading challenges including troubleshooting shader and rendering issues.
Provide shader support to the Lighting department during shot production.

Skills & Requirements:

Ideally 2+ years proven experience in a feature Animation production pipeline
Should be fluent with RSL and have experience with physically-based rendering
Familiarity with Maya and Windows considered an important asset
Strong Look Dev and Lighting skills both artistically and technically
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Team oriented with a proactive and positive attitude and good organization and communication skills
BC residents preferred, but not required

Senior FX Lead

Job Description

Position Overview:

The Sr. FX Lead is a highly skilled team leader, responsible for the day-to-day management of the FX Artists working on specific shot tasks and sequences, as well as designing/maintaining current workflows and setups needed to deliver specific effects on the show. The ideal candidate is a strong leader, with previous lead/supervisory experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Works closely with Head of Department / Supervisor and other leads to identify effects needed on shots and determine artistic and technical approach
• Works with FX Lead TD to oversee the design, build and implementation of FX setups in Houdini/ Maya
• Identifies complexity of the effects and delegate to FX members best suited for the task
• Participates in the creative process of the effects as needed through dailies and desk rounds providing constructive feedback and guidance and mentorship
• Acts as first line of quality control
• Reports to Head of Department on a daily basis on the progress of the FX work in regards to shot task status, technical issues, resources needed, and team morale
• Works closely with other TDs, Lighters, Compositors, and Render Wranglers to ensure smooth delivery of effects through our pipeline

Required Skills & Experience

• 3+ years film production experience with Houdini (Maya experience an asset)
• Working knowledge and understanding of FX lighting and compositing
• Must have strong communication skills and the ability to work within a team in our fast paced production environment.
• Must be self motivated and have a strong desire to produce the highest possible quality effects within our production schedule.
• Good understanding of scripting / programming in HScript/Mel, Python

Additional Skills:

• FX Pipeline Development or advanced understanding of processes between software and formats
• Strong knowledge of RenderMan, Mantra
• Shader Development
• BC candidate preferred but not required

Continue to develop character pipeline and rigging script libraries
Assist animators with shot specific technical issues

Evaluate and recommend tools/plug-ins or software to help improve production output

Requirements:

1+ years proven experience in animation/feature film/broadcast visual effects production
Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to character rigging and animation
Understanding of puppet and control philosophy
Excellent understanding of anatomy, volumes and masses, dynamics and character motion
Excellent understanding of the animation process, from storyboard to modelling to texturing, animation and rendering
Production knowledge of Maya, Python and MEL required

Previz Layout Artist

Job Description

Position Overview:

The Previz/Layout Artist is responsible for creating the previsualization of the film and refining the final camera movements.

Duties &Responsibilities:

Create sequences of shots that convey the story through the application of traditional filmmaking principles in a 3D computer environment.
Establish character blocking, camera positioning and animate camera movement.
Work with storyboards to create and enhance story through cinematic layout of shots.
Working collaboratively; meeting with Supervisor to ensure layout adheres to the vision set out by the Directors.
Deliver work in a timely manner.

Required Skills & Experience:

2+ years of professional experience working with Maya
Ability to interpret a storyboard.
Firm understanding of cameras, staging, composition, perspective, pacing, timing and general film making concepts in both animation and live action contexts.
Ability to work collaboratively, taking direction and feedback from the Supervisor and Directors.
Knowledge of animation production pipeline an asset.
Good communication skills both written and oral.
Comfortable modeling basic assets
Character animation an asset
BC residents preferred, but not required

Required Skills & Experience:

2+ years in design for animation or graphic design
Graduate from an animation school preferred
BA/BFA Degree in Fine Arts or Commercial Arts field an asset
Strong concept of colour, composition and design
Excellent drawing skills
Proficient in Photoshop
Experience in film and television work
A working knowledge of Maya is an asset
Experience with Shotgun is an asset
Excellent communication skills
Good problem solving skills
Thrive in a high pressure, deadline oriented environment
